Watching the sunset through a bus window at 5 AM on my way to Siliguri, India was a breathtakingly beautiful experience, but I am also perfectly fine with it being a once-in-a-lifetime sort of thing! As soon as that bus shifted into park, we were escaping from its doors like a pack of feral chickens. Now, don't get me wrong, the snacks we packed were perfectly capable of sustaining us on our journey, but after days of treating ourselves to the amazing local cuisine, our stomachs screamed for some real food! Our solution: A cute little street shop called Munna Fast Food right within walking distance of our stop! After stretching our legs and getting some good food back into our stomachs, we began to mentally prepare ourselves for the second part of our journey along ... read more

Siliguri to Darjeeling Siliguri officially sucks. Do not stay there unless you have to. To get to Darjeeling you have to get the train from Seldah station to New Jaipuiguri (NJP) and then get a shared jeep from Siliguri (around 4 km from NJP by auto rickshaw Rs115) to the hills (100rs for each seat - we bought the 4 back seats!!) We really wanted to go to Darjeeling but we found out from our hotel that the area was on strike. Darjeeling has these strikes or 'Bandhs' frequently as they are fighting for an independent state from West Bengal that they call Gorkhaland. During the strikes there is no movement of transport along the main highway linking Siliguri / New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to the hills of Kurseong or Darjeeling. This also means the Sikkim province ... read more

After leaving Phnom Pehn I headed south to Shianoukville. Its a small beach city in the very south of Cambodia, that travelers say is how Thailand used to be before tourism took over. out the window on the the 4 hour bus ride we were shown the real Cambodia. Vast rice paddies and lotus flower farms. As we crept closer to the coast the rolling hills took over until we decended the last one and found ourselves there. I hopped on the back of a motorcycle and headed to the guesthouse. the most popular area for travelers was buzzing with people adn there ended up being a big group of us that had met along the way down Vietnam adn reconnected there. For the most part we explored the city, i had my first win (and ... read more

So having ticked off a lifetime ambition (See Mt Everest) from the plane I landed at Siliguri at the foothills of Darjeeling with intention of travelling up the mountains on the little steam trains, 8 hrs but it does climb 8500ft! However a major problem, the politics of the region got in the way and there was a national strike, nobody was going anywhere by bus, train, taxi; the hills were closed. I hung around for a day hoping for a change but no joy so I queued for 3 hrs to get a train ticket to Calcutta and change to Plan B! It has to be said Siliguri was a horrible place, I managed to get lost and being so off the beaten map with no language skills I felt fairly uneasy being here but ... read more

After the fun of Kolkata we hit the road to Puri, a "beach" town 12 hours south. Our train pulled in at 5:30am (never a good time of day to arrive in a strange town) to be greeted by a crazed rickshaw driver telling us that 2 local boys were after us with knives as big as our arms. But madam, for 50 rupees extra he would somehow be able to protect us from these nasty men - how exactly we don't know, but he assured us 50 rupees would cover the cost of our lives. We pondered this for 10 seconds, took a gamble that he was drunk and making it all up, and we lived to see another day. Phew! That was close! NOT a good first impression of Puri, and the Maoist rebel ... read more

Et bien ... read more

Toytrain à Kurseong

Asia » India » West Bengal » Siliguri January 27th 2006

I had originally wanted to go either to or from Darjeeling via the Toy Train, however my enthusiasm for this had waned, having heard tales of how frequently the 6 hour journey could become 8 or 9 hours, plus the route it follows is so close to the road that the views aren't much different. So instead I simply went to the station this morning and took a few photos. Later in the day, on my way back to Siliguri by Jeep, we passed the train coming up, maybe 6 hours into its journey - the passengers did not look as though they were still enjoying the experience. In order to be full of energy for the day ahead, I ordered chicken sausages in one of the cafes - and got 11 of the blighters. Though ... read more
