Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

The Golden Triangle Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra
9th Jan Today we start 4 day Golden Triangle tour, picked up at 9am at Hotel by Rajinder Singh (Negie to his friends). Start 5 hour drive to Agra, big change when leaving city to country much more peaceful compared to Delhi. Brief collision with motorbike on route (this is normal). Lunch on the way with shop (obviously), Negie was a very nice guy, he thought Greg was Freddie Flintoff. Arrived in Agra 2pm, visit the following; Akbar's tomb, which was built by Akbar. Red Fort, massive place built by Akbar and finished by Shan Jahan. Go to Hotel Chanakya, food [View Full Entry]

We went to see the Taj Mahal today. As the fog began to clear Zoe got quite excited as we could begin to get our first glimpse of it towering above the city from our room in the hotel. The Taj Mahal is awesome, our pictures do not do it justice. Visit it. Don't pay more than 50 ruppes for photographs on the way out though, Zoe payed 150 to a boy called Jonny and was told off by our guide who proclaimed "This is why I told you to ignore the small boys!". After the Taj we visited the Red [View Full Entry]

After many hours at the Taj MAhal we decided it was time to grab a bit of lunch and head off to Agra Fort. We met this amazing guy selling essential oils that he makes from his own garden. He showed us a photo album of random shots of him with tourists, some magazine cut outs (seemingly unrelated) from movies and some pictures in other countries that he may have been to (when we looked more closely at the picture of the Eiffel Tower we recognised Eric Banna which twigged the movie cut outs!). The oils were actually really nice so [View Full Entry]

This morning I got up around 5am , and caught a tuk-tuk to the west gate of the Taj , they begin selling tickets for entrance to the Taj Mahal around 6:30 am , I arrived especially early so that I could be one of the first in line to get into the Taj , when it opens around 7am , I was really hoping to get some good photo's of the Taj Mahal before the immense tour group crowds descended on the place , I was not disappointed in my decision to get there early , but I was deterred [View Full Entry]

The Taj Mahal, what can we say but breathtakingly amazing. The most incredible monument to one woman with 20 000 workers from around the globe working over 20 years (beggining in 1631 and completed 1653) you can imagine every detail is perfect. It is flawless, perfectly balanced, amazing. We arrived relatively early to miss the crowds and watched the Taj appear from the morning mist and smoke from the fires last night. You are not allowed to take anything but water and camera into the grounds so it is perfectly clean, though a bit noisy. The gate house is spectacular and [View Full Entry]

Our bus into Agra was relatively uneventful, but we immediately felt like we were in back in a big city - home of the Taj! We were finally going to see it and couldn't wait! We got into Agra about midday and were picked up by 4wDs to take us to our hostel. It seems we were staying just outside the East Gate of the Taj which was about a 5 minute walk - if that! The weather was predicted to be crap the next day, hazy and overcast, so we were off to the Taj that afternoon. We decided to [View Full Entry]

We ended up crashing out early in Jaipur so I guess we didn't see that much...Thismorning was an early start to get the 8 oclock bus to Agra (a 5 1/2 hour trip) that included a minor accident, a chai stop and a minor detour around another crash. We arrivced in Agra and after a somewhat heated discussion with our rickshaw driver convinced hin htat we only wanted to go to the hotel of our choice not see his hotyel, his brothers shop or anything else...and not only that we did not want the cheap tour for the afternoon either (this [View Full Entry]

Agra is a polluted, traffic clogged industrial city with the magnificent white marble Taj Mahal at it's heart and it is truly a wonder. A Bengali poet described it as “a teardrop on the face of eternity” and it's beauty is difficult to describe. There's nothing but sky there's a real feeling that it is a mirage when you are there. The attention to detail and symmetry is amazing. The Taj was built by Shah Jahan to enshrine the body of his favourite wife. He was overthrown by his son Aurangzeb and after he died he was interred in the Taj [View Full Entry]

Christmas eve was spent on a train bound for Amritsar. We awoke Christmas day to some young children singing gingel bells. Tracy and I both had Father Christmas hats which we worn more for their warmth than festive cheer. Amritsar at Christmas time is cold. After getting a hotel room, we went off to have our Christmas dinner. Turkey was not an option so I went for chicken tikka masala. With full bellies we took an auto-rickshaw down to the Golden Temple and after washing our hands, feet and covering our heads, we spent the rest of the day enjoying the [View Full Entry]
