Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

We had a complete nightmare getting out of Kathmandu. There had been a lot of minor striking whilst we were in Nepal but of course they picked the day we were due to fly out to have the mother of all strikes. I'd intended to buy my brothers' girlfriends presents in the morning. No can do - all shops were shut. Our hotel also informed us that we may not be able to get to the airport - no taxis, cars or motorbikes are running due to the strike. Any car found on the road is being burnt. Oh goody! The [View Full Entry]

The rough with the smooth Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra
No one ever has anything nice to say about Agra, the town that surrounds the Taj Mahal. Everyone has stories of hassle from agressive touts and scammers, so my expectations aren't that high. On the other hand, everyone has loads of good things to say about the Taj Mahal, and so, as we're finding is the way here, we're ready to take the rough with the smooth. Our delayed train finally pulls into Agra at midnight, there are no touts around and the pre-paid rickshaw stand is still open, so we have an easy escape from the station. We end up [View Full Entry]

WHAT TO TAKE OR (NOT TO TAKE) WITH YOU TO GLORIOUS INDIA I just returned from from my second one-month stay in glorious India. I stepped out of my comfort zone and ventured this marvelous journey all by myself. My friends are still trying to decide if I were a pioneer for our age group or just plain crazy…..well, to tell you the truth - a little of both. From the moment at Memphis Airport I was scare [View Full Entry]

Right from my childhood I always heard about this manument which was constructed Emperor Sahajahan in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. While the white domed marble and tile mausoleum is most familiar, Taj Mahal is an integrated complex of structures that was completed around 1648. Ustad Ahmad Lahauri is generally considered as the principal designer of Taj Mahal. The marble dome that surmounts the tomb is its most spectacular feature. Its height is about the same size as the base of the building, about 35 metre and is accentuated as it sits on a cylindrical "drum" of about [View Full Entry]

Writing this on Tuesday afternoon but not sure when I’ll post it. There is an internet connection at the hotel but I don’t think it’s too reliable. The flight was fine so I can recommend Turkish Airlines for the future. But the journey from the airport to the hotel - well, it lived up to my expectations! After changing my money, I decided to pay a little bit more than usual for the taxi, hoping that the promise of “radio cabs” and luxury A/C cars” might mean the drivers also had a map. I’m just too gullible! When they say “radio [View Full Entry]

AGRA March 1st-March 3rd I didn’t give Agra any more than 1 day, which I think is really unfair to do to a place, but I also felt like I should hurry on to Rajasthan so that I could spend more time in the north. I arrived late on the 1st, and had these strange unexplained butterflies in my stomach, knowing I was so close to the Taj Mahal but couldn’t see it. I stayed in Sai Palace in Taj Ganj, named after the South Indian guru Sai Baba. There were large portraits of him, Jesus, and Buddha adorning the colorful [View Full Entry]

We flew from Kunming directly to Agra and landed at Military Base built by Brits for Flying Tigers. There are no commercial flights here but we are treated royally by the Indian Military as we land there. We headed straight to the Taj Mahal. There was a surprise marriage proposal from 2 of the passengers on tehs teps of the Taj Mahal. We will keep their identity secret as they have not told their family. We stayed at teh Amervillas with a spectacular view of teh Taj from our rom. We dined at the Indian Restaurant to Sitar and Tabla players [View Full Entry]

Day two of the India trip started off in an interesting manner. We had to get up really early and catch the train from Delhi to Agra. This meant that we had to be in the reception of the hotel at 6am so we could get to the train station on time. The drive to the train station was a bit of a dream, right up until we got close to the station where it then all turned completely chaotic. In Dubai people like to use their horns a lot, but here they take it to a whole new level. I [View Full Entry]

Greetings - Three weeks in and we are still loving India, which keeps finding new ways to awe us and keep us on our toes. On day eight, we flew from Varanasi to Khajuraho, where we spent the afternoon exploring around--and blushing at--the town's two dozen eleventh century erotic temples. The original inspiration for the three tiered, two-foot high carvings chiseled into Khajuraho's fleet of red sandstone temples has been lost to history (or so we learned while listening to an audio tour on early 80's Casio Walkmans before Anna's ate her tape), but the stunning, deeply-recessed images [View Full Entry]

We are now in the blistering heat of Agra. We'll get to our perfect moment in a minute, but first let's start where we finished, still in Delhi. Last day in Delhi was another day full day of sight seeing, although we're struggling to remember each of the sights so bear with us. Ah, there it is. We started off the day with a trip to the Red Fort, which surprisingly was a little disappointing. From there, we went to the Jama Masjid, which is a massive muslim mosque. Since we weren't wearing long pants I had to wear a full [View Full Entry]
