Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Agra: For the sake of love Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra
Thousands of workers toiled for 30 years to make a monument to prove that a man was indeed deep in love. The monument, of course, is the Taj Mahal. And the man - Emperor Shah Jahan who spent millions (pick a currency of your choice) in the 17th century to built this eternal classic in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Expensive proof but proof nonetheless. I was driving from Gwalior to Delhi. And, unfortunately, could only spend a day in Agra. I had to pick 2 from a choice of 4 - The Taj Mahal, The Red Fort, Fatehpur Sikri [View Full Entry]

Long flights into delhi via paris, no real problems but landed at 11pm after getting delayed and pretty tired. Guy met us from the hotel and sorted our taxi which drove us through delhi at the dead of night nearly hitting about 50 different motorbikes on the way, drove us down a deserted street with cows sleeping and figures huddled in dark alleyways. No tarmac, just a dusty road and then just stopped, no neon signs, nothing, just boarded up houses. Proby, jon and even to a certain extent quick crapping their pants hugging their wallets and wishing we'd paid more [View Full Entry]

Mark Twain divided the world into two parts: those who have seen the Taj Mahal and those who have not. After today, I have a true appreciation for this sentiment... Phred and I began our day at the Shanti Home, ready for our first adventures out of Delhi and on to the Utter Pradesh region of India; our destination, Agra, the home of what many have called, “the teardrop on the face of eternity,” the Taj Mahal. Our travels proved to be less than ideal, however, when our air-conditioner broke at a rest stop - not desirable in 100+ degree weather [View Full Entry]

It's difficult to imagine how the rest of our trip will compare after seeing the Taj Mahal. We had a few last stops on our way out of Agra, the Agra Fort (remember, the place where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his petulant son?). We got to have one last glimpse of the Taj before moving on to Jaipur... On our way to Jaipur, we stopped at Fatehpur Sikri (an ancient fortified ghost city which used to be the capital, built by Akbar in 1659, but later abandoned due to lack of water). We also saw Jama Masjid, a stunning mosque [View Full Entry]

We got an overnight train from Varanasi to Agra. Arriving in Agra, we were immediately impressed with its cleanliness. It's ready-made for a quick sight seeing tour, and doesn't feel the same as the rest of India. There's lots of big roads, shopping malls and fancy hotels. Our hotel was close to the Taj Mahal, in a place called Taj Ganj - an area established by the people working on the Taj Mahal. On the first day, we went to the Red Fort - a beautiful Fort constructed hundreds of years ago. It became the Palace of Emperor Shah Jahan [View Full Entry]
