Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Traveller Central
For the past few days I've been stocking up on supplies and exploring the area I'm staying in (Paharganj). It's traveller central with lots of travellers passing through and it kinda shows in the hecticness of the area. There are tons of shops selling souvenirs etc and lots of people trying to hustle your money out of you, the best way to get past them is generally to ignore them or if they're persistent say something like 'I no speaka de engleesh, i czech' and they seem to give up. We've bought some more Indian looking clothes so we blend in [View Full Entry]

Red Fort Palace - Delhi

Leaving Bandhavgar showed us how remote the park was. We opted to drive to Kati Junction and take the train to Delhi. After changing our tickets using Indian Railways electronic ticketing system, we embarked on what we were told would be a one and a half hour ride. This turned out to be a two and half hour drive over some very bouncy, badly maintained roads. Having budgeted two hours for the journey, we had to harangue our poor driver into making the train time. With only a few minutes to spare, we arrived at a filth pit of a level [View Full Entry]

I am feeling a bit remiss in my blogging. Yet as I glaze out the window at the bright sun and lush foliage of the south Indian country-side, I can't help but wonder... what the heck am I doing inside on the computer!?! Don't be too envious our current location, an eco-spa near Tiruvannamalai (don't worry I couldn't say it either) is a welcome departure from the rest of India. It has been a wild ride which I intend expound on more when the pool is not beckoning so earnestly. The Reders Digest version is that we landed in New Delhi [View Full Entry]

Our Visit to the Taj Mahal began at 7 am with a driver picking us up at Jai"s flat. Heavy fog mae travel difficult. Normally 3 1/2 hrs trip ended up being 5 1/2 going there and over 7 coming back. On the way the sights we saw included our fist Camel and Elephant. Imagine driving down the highway, think a two lane highway thru the countryside and their on the side of the road is an elephant being led by a man. A few more miles and their is a cart being pulled by a camel. Woman walking and carrying [View Full Entry]

The Old Living Quarters?
The Old Living Quarters?
Whatever it is, it's the first building we went in.
In the afternoon we toured the Agra Fort. The fort is actually part fort and part palace. And of course, most of the palace was close for renovations. We walked up to the red fort, over a moat, through a massive gate, and up a long incline. At the top was another huge gateway and a courtyard. Unlike the Amber fort in Jaipur, this one had no furnishings--that we saw. Maybe the closed sections had some. We did see where the family lived when they happened to be in residence. We saw an area that was the King's--his main room, surrounded [View Full Entry]

We made it to Agra yesterday. The city itself is a cesspool. Like a mini-Delhi. Traffic jams everywhere like I have never seen before rule the day. If you don't have 5 cars all pointed at each other trying to move you're not trying hard enough. To top it off, while you are stuck for all eternity in your vehicular-staredown, people of all ages and will come up, begging for money. Some will be older, some mothers with babies, some children carrying other children with scars. And they all descend at the same time, surrounding you. Even if you roll up [View Full Entry]

Resumen de las actividades del día: Recorrida a pie por los alrededores del hotel. Tren con destino a Jhansi. Autobús a Orchha.
