I was cleaning Swamiji’s veranda this afternoon. He is expected here tomorrow (with a group of 50 or so foreigners who will go to the first bath of Kumbh Mela), so you could say that it is GAME ON. It was a particularly auspicious time to be looking out from the veranda on the top floor of the White House, taking in the atmosphere of the whole Ashram. Feelings of anticipation, excitement and tension hung in the air. Outside: buildings, walls, signs, paths, carpets and windows were all being cleaned. Inside: rooms were being swept and tidied. Minds were preparing, contemplating and reflecting. On the surface there was a sense of urgency as one of the Swamis cycled between his duties, followed by a cloud of dust. In contrast, innerly, I was enjoying a much slower ... read more

Like clockwork, with the first day of Spring, our temp has come back up to min of 10 and max of 32 degrees. Yesterday we celebrated Vasant Panchami, a Hindu festival celebrating Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music and art. It is celebrated every year on the fifth day (Panchami) of the Indian month Magh (January). Saraswati is the symbol of balanced learning and of the Sushumna Nadi. In Indian art she is depicted with four arms, representing the four aspects of human personality or psychic functions. Antarkaranas of mana (mind), buddhi (intellect), chitta (consciousness) and ahamkara (ego). Saraswati holds a book (representing the Vedic texts and truth) and the four arms also represent the four Vedas; the three forms of literature. Poetry (crystal Mala for the power of meditation/spirituality), prose (the sacred Vedic book) and ... read more

We had a relaxing day off school yesterday. The weather was gorgeous and we took the opportunity for a picnic up the hill behind the Ashram. The karma yogis put the dirt there that came out of the Talab (our water catchment area) when they were digging it out. It’s a magnificent view from up there and the boys had a ball. The picnic sweets were those little tube packets of M and Ms or smarties... actually called Gems here. They were a huge hit with the boys, both for the chocolate and the magnetic game on top. Like mini golf with a magnet! After feasting, we sat on the side of the hill and took in the view, had some climbing challenges, threw rocks and breathed slowly! No surprises that the boys didn’t want to ... read more

Yesterday morning was really chilly, surely no more than 5 degrees, numb fingers and toes, revitalising cold air.… though the max temp reached about 22 degrees. I need to get organised as I have a bit of a performance to coordinate on the 26th of Jan for India Day. Lots of good creative energy flowing already so hope to pull it all together. An Australian who has been in Japan teaching for the past 6 years or so just arrived and he has a background in fine arts. Hope we can employ his artistic skills in the school soon. We have a cute logo that was designed many years ago for Water is Life, Rainwater Harvesting Project, with an open mouthed bird receiving a few precious drops. It is painted on the side of the water ... read more

We saw in the New Year here with beautiful company, food, songs and midnight prayer. Our weather forecast chart for the 1st of Jan said we could expect 'fine, with a chance for spiritual growth!' Second semester of school started officially on the 1st, though quite a few enjoyed a few extra days holiday in their villages and we had better attendance today. The college girls are keeping us entertained with their enthusiasm and artistic talents. While previously only involved with the lower primary children in the school and middle primary in the hostel; this year I’ve also taken on a project to help train up some of the college girls who will become future teachers. It is a big task though I have another enthusiastic Karma Yogi to do this with and it’s sure to ... read more

It's getting cooler in the mornings. A couple of days ago I saw a green parrot sitting with a heap of pigeons on the side of a building. So lovely. Like someone had coloured in one of the birds from a black and white print. The sunflowers are coming out, kind of ironic for this time of year, mid-winter! They look amazing. Saw a HUGE eagle yesterday, circling high above. The pigeons and other smaller birds were going crazy swooping around it and doing high and low dives in their ‘safety in numbers’ groups. The sunsets have also been extra specky! Just now there were straight lines of clouds… while the wind was blowing from the side direction, the lines were keeping their straightness! It is hard to capture the colours and awesomeness of it... It did ... read more

Before Christmas got here I made lots of decorations for our room. Grandma sent me some stamps and stickers and things to hang up. Aiden and I made origami with Dhyananandji and hanged some up in the room. I made heaps of paper chains too. We got a Christmas tree out of the store room and decorated it on our balcony. We couldn’t hang the candy canes because of the squirrels! On Christmas Eve, we decorated a Christmas tree in the Bhakti Sagar. Mum got the music ready and printed some Christmas songs and broke the laminator trying to laminate the song sheets. I drew some pictures around the sides. We had a yummy dinner and after prayer and bajhans we sung the Christmas songs. We even had ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas poem and Mum’s ... read more

When it was Avatarpuri’s birthday, we snuck out of the party with Premanundji and did this fire balloon thing. It was a like a massive paper hot air balloon. We got one each and we put a wish inside with our mind. It was a bit windy and mine almost hit a tree! But it dodged it and sailed up into the sky until it was a small dot like a star. I waited for a bit to hear if there was an explosion when it hit the ozone layer! I only heard an “EEEK”. Maybe that means UFO in Slovenian or Croatian! The next day I asked everyone if they saw a UFO in the night! No one owned up. On Christmas Day my wish came true and I got a DS game card with ... read more

They waited until I was back from school to decorate the party room because I was sad if I was going to miss it. Narabdaji helped us get ready for the lotto draw at Avatarpuri’s birthday. We got some papers and wrote numbers up to 96. We made some tickets (I drew a picture but Mum can't work out how to cut and paste it into this blog for you to see, so I'll have to tell you about it) , like with square pieces of paper that was scrunched like wrapping a toffee. It had curls in the middle and sharp points at the ends of it. Then Avatarpuri went to his room and got lots of things to give away for lotto prizes. Like flavoured milk straws (Sip-Ahhhs), Pez, Krishna statues, wind up toys, ... read more

This is Avatar Puris birthday party. We stood behind the door with firecrackers and as soon as he came in, BANG! He a very big shock! Avatar got a camera from Samadhiji (best cook in the world) and some other fun things for presents! We had the lotto draw so Avatar could get rid of some of his things to make room for new ones! We played some party games and watched a slide show of pictures from the olden days. Later on Samadhiji cooked up some toasted sandwiches and we had a delicious dessert.... read more
