Feb 22nd commemorates Thinking Day in the world of Scouting and Guiding. Cal and I had our investiture!!!!! FINALLY!!! Even though Mum took me to my first Scout Jamboree in Canada before I was one and I swapped badges with my Grandpa at another one in Victoria, we finally 'officially' became part of the Scout Movement! I am in Cubs and Cal is in Joeys. We have badges on our uniform now and had a little ceremony in the garden with Mum and Dad and a couple of our friends. We made a little Promise and Prayer. Scouts are into fun, freedom, friendship, excitement and challenges. And traveling to big Jamborees for camping. adventures and to swap badges! I'm working on my Bronze Boomerang badge which has lots of parts. I've done the knots, first aid ... read more

The challenge is: 'all Bhaktas at both morning and evening prayers and all meals, together, in Mauna'. In the words of Canadian Yashodaji, "God Help Us!" Now we're sitting in rows, Indian style for eating and being waited on by servers who carry buckets of dhal, rice and chapatis. It's the classic 'eat as much as you like, but be sure to eat all that you take'. It means you need to be very observant of self and aware of others and have your hand ready to motion when you do not want more of food that is continually being offered. Background info to give you a small insight into what these new rules mean for us: currently there are only ever about five of us at morning prayer and previously the kitchen remained accessible at ... read more

We celebrated the Holi festival, also known as the festival of Colours, honouring the value ingrained since time immemorial of evil overpowered by love, truth and devotion. It also commemorates 'Ras Lila' - the enduring love saga of Radha and Krishna. Holi is a uniting festival in India, participated by all the various religions and castes. There are numerous legends and stories associated with this day. Here is one version: Long ago there was a King and his name was Hiranyakashipu. He asked God for immortality. Although God said it was against the natural and cosmic laws, the King was persistent. He insisted that God bless him so that he would not die either in or outside his house, by day or night; that neither weapons, humans, animals, illness or elements be the cause of his ... read more

Dear Diary are not the right words to start a blog entry. So what really makes something appropriate for a Blog Topic? When you live on an oil rig, a submarine or in an Ashram, you really are living in close quarters. Your self awareness is enhanced along with your awareness of others. So everything becomes appropriate in it's own time. Mahaprabhuji summarised his wisdom into 50 Golden Teachings. Two of these are 'To be truthful' and 'To be kind'. The thing is, sometimes it is not easy to be both of these. Is it others who don't want the truth so we keep it from them to spare them the pain or is it ourselves with some inhibition about the truth? Well, I guess so far the majority of the teachings I have received have ... read more

The first group of Karma Yogi's has come back from the Kumbh Mela after an inspiring, transformative time setting up the camp, uniting and dipping in the River Ganges. Here, our preparations have been diverse and plentiful for Swamiji and the expectant group of about another 60 people, mostly European; such as late night carpet laying, sewing, flower arrangements, laying of pipes and of course more than a little bit of cleaning. Cal's contribution was a Jadan classic: making OMs' in the sand! Mark is busy working in the hospital. He's fixing up some doors and windows. Some of the windows were put in the wrong way so he's changing them around to fit fly screens in. He says he thinks the reason he came here is to learn how to use all the workshop tools ... read more

We celebrated Shivaratri on the 12th of Feb and kept a night vigil. Shivaratri is a very auspicious festival day and night, in honor of Lord Shiva, the destroyer (of all karmas) and the liberator. He symbolizes the highest form of protection and blessing on the spiritual path. He represents the force, the Shakti, which enables the human to achieve the goal of human life, that of self realization. Bhajans went long into the night, as did the campfire glow and the chants of "Om Namah Shivaya". Markji missed the evening bus due to new bus stops during Commonwealth Games construction, so left Delhi in the morning for Jodhpur. He changed buses there for destination Jadan and arrived at about 3am, still in time to join in the Shivaratri festivities. Even after a day of fasting ... read more

“The children in our School are bused in, coming from villages in the surrounding area. The School aims to first give them opportunities to understand Indian culture, become confidant rural people, able face the problems and competition in all the fields. We are helping them become competent with real life skills" School Principal. We had an excursion to the Hospital today. It came to my attention late last week that the lower primary classes had not yet had a check up with our resident Dentist, now active in the Ashram Hospital. The 50 odd children from one of the Kindergarten classes were so excited to be out of the classroom. We sang the "Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy" Mantra on the dusty walk over from the School and I enjoyed the walk as much as the ... read more

On Sunday I got to help Pushpaji in the garden. She let me pick some spring onions. We were walking around the vegetable garden picking some of the big onions for our dinner. I planted some bean seeds next to the fence. They’re going to grow probably next month all the way up the fence and give the other vegies some shade. I got some lettuce for my own dinner too. And some mint too. Pushpaji said that I could have a mint garden to myself so I have to make sure the weeds don’t get too big. When we went to Pali to go to the doctor, there was another boy from the hostel who was sick too. We had to wait a long time for the doctor to get back from his chai (tea) ... read more

Yashodaji and I have been having our share of Jadan moments and adventures. We were walking around searching (stalking) Swamiji and ended up at the OM Ashram. Had a feeling Swamiji was there. We did a bit of the boundary walk and then asked the guard if he knew where Swamiji was. He said in Guruji's Samadhi. So we headed that way. Now that there is a big hole in the wall, from afar you can see the big photograph of Guruji and of course, with all the neon lights around it, it was well lit up. We were walking in the gorgeous moonlight to the picture, though I could hear Swamiji's voice and knew he was not actually in that direction. We kept walking and finally, he called out from the side "Hey girls! What ... read more

The group has arrived and we are also enjoying the company and light of Claireji from London who is here for about 10 days. Today, as well as Australia Day, we celebrated India’s National Day with a School performance and a crowd on the grassed area. Some marching, lots of assembly drama items including Mahabharat (one of the major Sanskrit epics of ancient India) stories on the stage and some delicious food. Cal dressed up for a few items, his favourite costume is attached. Didn’t manage to capture A’s full costume with the camera though he had his share of the light as entertainer and being entertained. Have kept the local tailor busy making costumes while also been up late sewing myself, most nights this week, such as a ‘Say No To Plastic’ banner that we ... read more
