Well, this is the start of what hopefully is a long period of traveling. During this time I hope to travel lots (duh), live in one city or town for a period of time (a year hopefully) as an expatriate, volunteer in a few places, and finally learn a foreign language or two. We'll see how it goes. I arrived late in New Delhi, picked up luggage, cleared customs, and got a pre-paid taxi, which is supposed to prevent scams and rip-offs. Got into the taxi and immediately entered into the soap-opera drama of a scam or "tout", in which the driver did not know the address of my very frequented hotel in the New Tibetan Colony. The way to correct this problem, as the driver and his suddenly materializing interpreter and confidant told me, was ... read more

Rene was very tired today so Ojo and I just grabbed the camera and we sneeked out of the hotel room on our own. It was quite late at night, but there was so much life on the street here in pahar ganj. It was a little bit like in italy, but with more people and more cows on the street. It was quite dark on the road, but tigers and bears can see well in the dark. So that was no problem for us. Then we followed our noses. There were lots of beautiful smells in the air. It smelled like chicken, fresh baked bread, fruits, incence and then I just grabbed Ojo and ran. There was the smell of fresh hot milk. Yummy! Now that was really great. There was a biiiig bowl full ... read more

They say, cows are the holy animals here in India. Actually I was hoping that Tigers may be holy, too. Cows roam the narrow roads everywhere in Delhi. Actually when I am typing this in an internet cafe, there are cows outside and watch me. Maybe they just wait for me to finish, so that they can check their email. They eat everything they can find on the roads. Which is good in a way, because some of the leftovers are swept from the road this way. On the other had, I have to be very careful not to step into a big pile of cow shit. The other night I was waking a dark alley, when I almost slipped and fell. The very bad thing is, that you fall right into the cow shit, if ... read more

India is quite hot, you know. And Indians seem to get thirsty quickly. They dont sell bottles of juice or cans of lemonade here. Actually, what they do is much more fun. The make you fresh juice. It workes like this. First you decide if you are thirsty. Yes! Then you think about what kind of juice you would like to have. Orange! Then you ask Rene to order you the juice in hindi. If you dont have Rene with you maybe English will be alright, too. Then you watch the show. First he will take out some peeled oranges. Yummy! Then he will throw them into a big green machine, that makes a lot of noise. But actually everything is noisy in India. Then below the machine the juice gets filtered and poures into a ... read more

India - Delhi India is just like a big fish, you love it, but sometimes it can give you a hard time. - Shirkaan So we finally made it to tiger country. To tell you the truth, I havent met any tigers yet. But I am still looking. Our first room was at the Namaskar Hotel in the middle of pahar ganj. Pahar ganj is a big buzzing bazaar, where you can buy almost everything India has to offer. The streets are narrow and quite dirty. Actually it was quite a bit of a shock, when we arrived here. I thought tiger country would be much nicer. Then the hotel room was not good at all. Everything was sticky and dirty and the bathroom was very small, too. The blankets on the bed looked like they ... read more

Koenig Solutions Pvt Ltd So, that was the end of my four months travelling! I returned to Delhi where I was to start five and a half weeks study for a professional IT qualification. I’m studying at a company called Koenig Solutions. They are a bona fide IT training outfit which offers programmes to westerners. I was there for an intensive 40 day programme to become a “url= http://www.koenig-solutions.com/training/mcsd_training.asp?currid=7&CourseId=20&CityName=Delhi&hStatus=Budget&k=Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer” (MCSD) in C#. Joining me on the course is my friend: “other” Nick from London. He’s just quit his job to go to live with his woman in Ireland. Meanwhile, he’s taking the opportunity to re-skill before looking for a job over there. Nick had brought my laptop over from London and was a little surreal to ... read more

yep...how lucky you are....to be able to fart with confidence....I've been pretty careful to avoid foods that I thought might lead to the inevitable Delhi belly...but it seems I haven't done a very good job! Needless to say that's all you'll want to know....I'm just looking forward to the 7 hour train journey I've got....still there's always immodium. Still this is only recent news....yesterday I spent the morning trying to figure out a way to Nawalgarh....however the train now longer runs from Delhi...it's now goes from a station about 80K away....having been told I could get a bus direct and book it I headed down to the bus station in an auto...this time using the pre-paid booth...50rp didn't seem so bad. Got there and was sent to three different counters before finally reaching counter number 6, ... read more

Saw the Taj Mahal- absolutely amazing. It's rare that you can come upon a site that lives up to its hype but the Taj is one of those rare breeds. The photo's obligatory but really it can't produce the leveling you get when you see it in person. Magnificent. I heard one praise that calls it the greatest monument to love. If it were a monument to kicking puppies it would still drop you on your ass. That was our last highlight in India. It goes to hell from there. Our last train ride we were threatened with jail time and our last taxi ride, forced to get the police involved. The train from Delhi to Agra is only 2 1/2 hrs so we didn't think it necessary to pay extra for the more comfortable assigned-seating ... read more
