Happy Hampi Birthday Another Indian rail journey begins at 4am on the 22nd of November, as usual the trusty mobile doubles as our travelling alarm; god only knows how many trains we would have missed without it. It seems that every trip we take is at least 7-8 hours in duration, if not longer. This one was a little different, only just… it was a daytime trip and only 8 and a bit hours long. There are so many things we take for granted back home, take travelling as an example… You can expect to travel close to 300kms in around 4 hour’s wether it be by train or car. Not here, you need to double the travel time and then add some. This journey pretty much followed the Indian rule of 40kms/hr. The only similarity ... read more

Many of the places I end up visiting in India are recommended to me by various other travellers I meet along my journey and that is how I heard about Hampi. I arrived right in the middle of a festival where thousands of people filled the streets and main bazaar to celebrate with music and dance among Hampi's temples. Police were here on mass to keep everything running smoothly and helped fill up all available accommodation around the main bazaar. I made my way over to the quiet side of the river via a motor boat crossing and was happy to find plenty of space there. This is definitely the side to be on if your staying more than a few days. Accommodation here is very cheap and there are numerous restaurants providing good food of ... read more

After a relatively pleasant 8 hour train ride in the heat of the day we hadn't even stepped off the train and we were being accosted by rickshaw drivers willing to take us the 15km to Hampi for as little as 20 rupees ($0.50CND). Getting off the train is always an experience. We've found in the smaller tourist towns, you can get a ride very cheap, sometimes free, from the train station because the rickshaw driver is hoping to get some other business like a commission from the hotel you stay at, or a city tour by rickshaw, or an illegal substance purchase. We try and avoid the relentless rickshaw drivers because you end up paying through the teeth for a room. Out of the swarm of drivers we choose a honest looking young man and ... read more

Hampi is a magical place and we were really glad that we bothered with the 9 hour journey from Bangalore to get there. Huge rocky landscapes and thousands of temples and ruins created a mystical setting for exploring, and tourist cafes and colourful guesthouses ensured a relaxing time for travelers. We left Hampi with so many memories. We hope that our photographs do justice to this cool place. ... read more

I travelled from Goa to Hampi on a 13 hour bus trip which was supposed be 9 hours. I capped off the ride with a thoroughly annoying and frustrating time trying to find a room at 11pm. I finally settled in a small, but decent place and went to bed. I awoke in the morning, bathed, and went straight up the metal staircase outside my room to the rooftop restaurant for some coffee. It took a few minutes to wipe the sleep from my eyes and adjust to the sun, which I hadn't seen in days. But once I did, I found myself on a third floor rooftop restaurant, in the town of Hampi, surrounded by huge boulders and ancient Hindu temples. I felt as though I were in another era. The view and the feeling ... read more

Hi everyone, trhe entry says Hampi, but i'm actually in Bangalorte at the moment. We took the night train from Hampi and arrived this morning, not hanging around though, we're taking the train again tonight to Cochin (or Kochi, but i dont really like to use the new indian names, because i've been told that very few indians use them , Mumbai for Bombay etc. and they are only in place as a result of a lot of protesting from Shiv Sena a far right hindu nationalist party who dont really sounds like nice guys). Hampi is the old capital of the whole of southern india, the town itself isn't much to see nowadays, just a maze of little streets, but its set amongst the most amazing landscape, and there are ruins or temples and palaces ... read more

We were very lucky last night. We arrived in the IT city of Bangelore around 11pm, after a bustrip of more than ten hours. We tought to have to overnight in Bangelore ( an idea that we really didn't like) but running around between the busstand and the railwaystation ended up succesfully in a seat on the last semisleeper bus from Bangelore to Hampi. GIRLPOWER! The night was horrible, although there weren't many people on the bus, so we had both two seats for the price of one... but the few man on the bus, and there frustrated sexual life, disturbed our beautysleep many times. Oh, we are used to it, but we both really hate it... we arrived in Hospet right on time, took a bus to Hampi and found a nice and cheap room ... read more

It was my first Passover that I had partook. I know the story of the Passover and stuff, but to be part of the seder was a different experience. I had spent the afternoon looking for a "wines" shop that sold wine. In most places in India when you see sign that says "wine shop", it just means that they sell alcohol and SOMETIMES they have wine. Any way, I had to take a few buses around Salem to fine a couple of bottles of wine. It was fun to go from one place to another looking for wine and also looking for things like Parsley and some stuff like Walnuts. Finally I found a place where they sold wine, it wasn't that great, but it was better than nothing. I felt good to be part ... read more

After a night on the bumpiest road in India I made it to Hampi! Fantastic place, scenary amazing! Used to be a city called Vijayanagar, ruined city in the midest of masses of boulders and banana plantations. It was founded in 1336 and reached a population of 500K. Now it's a small, friendly village - very chilled. Hung out for an extra day for the festival celebrating Shivaratri, the wedding of the Hindu God Shiva and Pawarti. Two massive temple chariots rumble down the town's main street and everyone throws bananas at them for good luck. Got some cracking video footage of the event...drummers, food stalls, bangle sellers...a real melay of activity. The Indians definately know how to party...give em a couple of drums and they'll have the place rocking! Met a few cool people, but ... read more

Ok. The longer Hampi post... What was really striking about Hampi was that just a few hours on from the train journey, I find myself in some past life, Quantum Leap style. From Panaji, an Indian town that feels more like somewhere on the Med, to the India you see on travel documentaries - cows by the score, oxen-pulled carts, huge temples, crumbling buildings, and touts, touts, touts and then, for good measure, a few more touts. It is a very, very strange environment. Like stepping back 500 years. Or maybe like going to the Glastonbury Festival three months after its finished. Or, maybe, it's like visiting the former centrepiece of an incredibly wealthy and populous civilisation that has fallen into ruin, and slowly been recolonised by Hindu pilgrims, travellers, and the assorted stalls, travel agents ... read more
