06/12-15/12 Ooty to KolKatta Two days before we leave India and we’re both starting to feel like time has slipped us by. There is so much more to see in this amazing country, yet we have come to the end of our stay. Well there’s nothing quite like a taste before one immerses themselves in full. We have had more than a taste, I think its more like we’ve bitten off more than we can chew, only this time it tastes so good we just want more and we will. Colonial India was very much a land for those with privileges and Ooty, a hill station in India’s south west is that, a privilege for all of those who get the opportunity to visit. Originally a small town, a summer sanctuary, used as a get away ... read more

Hello everybody, we’re both safe and very well, as you can appreciate the Intruder took a lot out of both of us and for a little while it was hard to write about what was, now, when we look back a funny yet traumatic experience. All is good now and we’re both back on track. So much has happened since then, it’s almost like our adventure’s are becoming a little bit hard to keep track of, if it wasn’t for Mel’s own personal journal, I’m sure much would remain as memories more than stories. So we’re in the land of the Dalai Lama - Mcleod Ganj, an inspirational little town will be our rest stop for the next few days before we continue on the last leg of this Indian adventure. Not long, only 9 days ... read more

Well a happy 2007 to everyone we hope that the festive season was exactly that and that the start of this New Year is all as you have planned. At this moment, we are both in Kathmandu Nepal, this place is so refreshing friendly, we like it a lot. So much has transpired since our last entry, we’ve been living life to the fullest of late and I guess our blog updates… well, have not been put on a back burner, as such, just not enough hours in a day if you know what I mean. The Intruder After being so grounded by the majesty of the view upon Hanuman mountain, our first morning in Hospet proved to be equally memorable only in a not so memorable way, as you will understand shortly. Hotel Malligi is ... read more

Hanuman - the Monkey God Seeing as it was our last night in Hampi and we needed to catch a train the day after next, in Hospet, we decided to change hotels, let me tell you we’ll never forget this day, or rather the morning after. After an amazing tour through the old cities of Hampi, our guide Rajnu had suggested we head up to the holy temple of Hanuman - the monkey god of strength. The temple is of much significance to the Hindu peoples, as it is the birth place of this super strong, face of a monkey, body of a man, God. And what a place to be born, atop of a peak overlooking the whole of Hampi, and which is only accessible via the infamous 1000 step staircase into the clouds. So ... read more

Happy Hampi Birthday Another Indian rail journey begins at 4am on the 22nd of November, as usual the trusty mobile doubles as our travelling alarm; god only knows how many trains we would have missed without it. It seems that every trip we take is at least 7-8 hours in duration, if not longer. This one was a little different, only just… it was a daytime trip and only 8 and a bit hours long. There are so many things we take for granted back home, take travelling as an example… You can expect to travel close to 300kms in around 4 hour’s wether it be by train or car. Not here, you need to double the travel time and then add some. This journey pretty much followed the Indian rule of 40kms/hr. The only similarity ... read more

20th November Mel’s birthday in Palolem After a well deserved day of rest, our journey started to take on a celebratory note, as Mel’s birthday was rapidly approaching. So the boys Deepu and Amrose had decided arrange a bit of a birthday in Palolem as they would not be able to partake on the 23rd. 7am at he beach, as soon as you reach the sand turn right, walk past the two beach huts masquerading as shops, face the ocean and look for Amrose. We did exactly this and thee he was with his family’s traditional fishing boat. A morning of Dolphin spotting had been planned. It was ok for Mel, being the birthday girl and all, but I had to help get this thing in the water and as you will see in the photo’s ... read more

A day with Deepu and Amrose The morning starts like most others power cut. The whirring of the AC, is no longer and we are instantly reminded of where we are. It’s about 8.30am the roosters have been crowing for just about as long as the motorbike horns have been tooting, the day has definitely started. The streets are a buzz with activity, mostly locals though; most of the tourists are more than likely nursing hangovers from the long night of drinking extremely cheap alcohol. Kingfisher- the beer we drink round here is very cheap in Goa, no alcohol tax, so a 600ml bottle is 50 rups, about $1.50 Australian. Even cheaper for the Brits and Europeans and I’m sure its just of cheap for Israeli’s for which there are so many of. In fact every ... read more

13th - 18th Panjim, Capo Da Rama, Our new friends - Deepu and Amrose, Keeping up with the journal is becoming increasingly more difficult as we get more and more into the swing of life in India. With each new day we learn many new words, have many new experiences and meet so many more interesting people. Some of whom have become an integral part of our adventure to date, others like trees on a highway as we pass along this Indian expedition. So we thought it best to bring you all up to speed to date. We have now made our way by train down to Bangalore via Hampi and Hospet. Both of which have many ruins of archeological significance. Again I get ahead of myself, so let me tell you more about our last ... read more

Some things always seem to run like clock work over here, trains for the most part are on time, given the sheer volume of people this is no small achievement. Another regularity are the constant power cuts and blackouts which place most, in fact all places we have been so far, outside Mumbai, in a perpetual wave of power on, power off. Panjim the capital of Goa is one of these places. It’s funny what becomes familiar when you are so far from home, both Mel and I have become very attached to the constant whir of the Air Conditioners (AC), so when our familiar friend decided to stop whirring, we knew it must be close to nine in the morning. Awake now, we decided to order breakfast. One of the great things about traveling is ... read more

I don’t know what it is about India in particular that has made our jaunt through this country so very memorable in such a short space of time. Beautiful people, it’s the common theme throughout the whole of our trip to date, whether we meet them or they meet us, I’m not really sure, it’s just working really well. John (Goan Taxi Driver) is another example of one such person. The Indian ethics of respect and hard work run so deep through this man, it blew both of us away. Oh and another ethic which is equally as important…. honesty, this is the sort of man that cops the 100 rupee fine for not wearing his “taxi” shirt, than pay a 50 rupee bribe. I don’t think I have felt any safer in such an unsafe ... read more
