Monday - Day 12 Meeting Denis. I started my plan of going to the centre on Monday morning. A new face awaited us when I arrived. A long-haired hippy looking guy from Cork in Ireland by the name of Denis. We walked the dogs together and I told him what I knew of the centre, which dogs were which (that were still there and that I'd met before) and showed him the cats, kittens and puppies. He seemed really nice and was so kind to the animals, calling them 'sweethear't is they were girls, 'fella' or 'big man' if they were boys and other pet names such as 'shithead' and 'the champion pisser'. He works with horses apparently and definitely seemed to have a way with animals. It worked quite well us working together as it ... read more

Its hard to believe we gave up our cute little apartment in Crystal City in March, and even harder to believe we have been on the road since May. 18 countries later, we are still going but looking forward to China where we would be in one place for the 16 week spring semester. Laura has finished her PhD applications to Emory, U-Washington, Hopkins, Harvard, and U-Minnesota so far. The last 3 to U-Texas, U-North Carolina and U-Michigan are due by the end of next month so that project will soon draw to a close. Also her 4th power cord just got fried but overall her 6 year old laptop is still running. She also continues to blog for ASIRT.org. I am working on getting at least one of our 2 now broken cameras fixed. The ... read more

Day 2. 1. Everything's damp here - nothing gets dry quickly - clothes, tobacco, the road. 2. It rained, thundered and sort of lighteninged today. 3. I only took one photograph today - partly because i didn't want to take my camera to the centre for the first time (I will do next time though!) and partly because I'm still nervous about getting a big flashy item like that out in public yet. 4. I wih I had someone to share a room with as it definitely works out cheaper... perhaps the swedish girl at the centre I met today...? The aim today was to get to the animal rescue centre and be back in time for dinner with the americans (collective name - hope they don't mind...) at 7pm. I woke up... then went back ... read more

I'm thinking about the style of this blog... the writing style. I'm not a great writer so I'm never sure how to put things. I'm sure, given a little time, I'll find the right 'style' so bear with me and they may get better. remember this is aimed any anyone who wants to read about what I'm up to. It's accessible to everyone including 84 year old ladies and 14 year old girls... Day 1. Apparently I can sleep with air conditioning roaring away, albeit with earplugs, but I'm impressed! So today, I ventured to the beach. Woke up so late as I was really tired from travelling yesterday. Went and had tea and toast in the hotel cafe... I'm not sure if everything in Goa is like this, but this particular hotel, if not, is ... read more

So, after going to the beach and coming back to the hotel to have some dinner, I onyl bumped into a girl whose girlfriend was from Lowestoft! Moving on, as they weren't very sociable at all, I met, at the same time, a man (Tom) from USA with three other friends (Penguin, Ra and Sacha) who were travelling around like me! I ended up joining them for a drink where we quickly found out that we were all into festivals, mad costumes, getting trashed and having a laugh! They were from south of San Fransisco and have been to Burning Man etc. We chatted for a while, before belatedly wandering down to the beach to sit down... I suddenly became their tour guide which, to them was miles better than the guide they had in Egypt ... read more

So, from my Costa da Gama Homestay in Fort Kochin, together with Helen from England, we shared a rickshaw to get to Ernakulam Railway Station, took us about 15-30 minutes to get there. We were worried for we might've missed the train. However, Benson assure us that we'll be there on time. Well, that's how relaxed South Indians are. We reached the station, and I decided to get some knick-knacks for my train journey. A lot of people keep telling me not to buy anything in the train station, even from the chai-wallahs. Well, better be safe than sorry. Helen and I went on separate ways, she was in S6 coach and I was in S11 coach; Sleeper class. Ok, I was quite skeptical about the sleeper class, because it looks horrible to me. I requested ... read more

I will die a saint's death, said Dick. You? You'll be dragged into a ditch by a pack of dogs. They will eat the flesh from your legs and you will rot there, said Odin. Next day Dick didn't like the look of the first motorbike boy. He continued around the dirty tracks of Anjuna. He was confused. It was midday. No motorcycles passed. He shuffled across another concrete bridge over another stream of shit. He was lost. There was a black dog beside the road. Good afternoon, said Dick. He felt the dog's teeth in the back of his leg. He turned and the dog disappeared through a doorway. An old Indian lady shook her fist at him. There was blood on the back of his leg. He washed it with warm beer and limped ... read more

Now then folks.... This is, as promised, the official KoemanBlog, brought to you from a wide variety of gloriously exotic worldwide locations so that you, the humble British public, can be kept fully in the loop with my goings on. Although let's be honest with ourselves, the only people who will actually read what I write will be my immediate family, and I think maybe if I'm lucky one or two other people will occasionally glance at a couple of the photos. This is being written in an internet cafe in Goa down the road from Anjuna Beach where I have just spent the last 5 days. There's not an awful lot to update you on thus far as Goa was selected as a start off point in order for me to do a few days ... read more

India - March 2 - April 2, 2010 We had heard before coming to India that we will either love it or hate it. For the both of us it was somewhere in between. We arrived in Mumbai late in the evening and had to settle for an expensive but not very nice hotel near the airport. The next day we bought the Lonley Planet India guide, orientated ourselves and went to the cheap hotels of the Colaba tourist district. We spent 2 days exploring the city, and true to what they say, this is a diverse city with vast contrasts. On one side, you have sprawling suburbs with luxurious high rise condos, while on the other, immense poverty and massive slums. What makes it different from other cities is how closely together the two are. ... read more
