Yee ha! The twins are at home now so we can really get into the mood for travel. Only two days left at work and then it's the final countdown. The Mongolian visas are being processed and after a day in Shenzhen we can get the China visas under way. I'm slightly worried about the Belarus visas but hey ho - we'll see in Moscow! So far so good. Nurse Sara is giving great advice on the first aid kit planning - you're a star Sara!... read more

I live in "old Sai Kung town", Hong Kong... I just moved here (I mean China overall) about three months ago... so if I say something hopelessly silly ignorant, stupid or pretentious ... I expect plenty of rude emails to the editor telling me off and informing me that my contribution was the first part of their favourite community rag (this column goes into Explore Magazine) to be sent for recycling. Sai Kung is a fishing village bordering on the New Territories (or some argue it's still part of Kowloon depending on which postman you talk to). The village has long been the retreat of many expats - mainly British/American, Australian .. with a smattering of East and West Europeans... I confirmed this during an informal survey taken while listening in to other people's conversations at ... read more

SUNDAY- A TRIP TO THE NORTH EAST COAST: Good morning everyone. Yesterday we had a change of pace and headed onto the mainland and the eastern coast. I had read about Sai Kung as being one of the best regions fro fresh seafood. It took us 2 MTR changes and a long bus trip to get there. On the way we stopped at Diamond Hill to see the Chi Lin Nunnery. It is the most beautiful place and so serene. The gardens ate full of bonsais (large Bonsais) and the buildings themselves are so beautiful. I got into trouble for taking a photo of one of the the buddas on an alter. Accross the road are the Nan Lian Gardens. The brochure states: "a classical garden in a modern city, Serenity in the midst of urban ... read more

Tuesday was the day I finally got to showcase my lovely new tailored school tracksuit! Not too much to get excited about... it is white, purple and black and reminds me slightly of the 80's shell-suit trend! Anyhow, the school picnic - the whole school (over 1000 children) and some parents and the teachers boarded coaches and went to Sai Kung Country park where we spent the day relaxing and having a picnic, playing with the children, chatting to some parents etc etc. Played a bit of football with some of them too, but it was really hot so not for long! Some of the parents asked us to join them for their picnic which was nice, and we chatted to the other teachers. It was a really nice, relaxed day because often the teachers are ... read more

not literally but now that I have your attention, I can tell you about the world's oldest passenger liner that serves as the world's largest floating book fair, the SS Doulos. It was docked in Hong Kong this week so I paid a visit. It was built in 1914, two years after Titanic, and is set to be decommissioned in 2010. It's crew is all volunteer--400 from 50 countries and the ship has visited 550 ports in over 100 countries. 500,000 books (100 tons) are carried on board and 18 million people have visited the ship and it's book fair since 1978. Check it out at doulos.org. Oh, and it HAS been raining! I visited Sai Kung with Hideko last weekend for a fantastic seafood meal. Customers purchase live seafood from the fishermen and fisherwomen who ... read more

So, Kowloon side heat 3 of battle of the bands held at Sticky Fingers bar in Tsimshatsui was a night of fantastic music to remember. Apart from the bar charging a $100 cover charge for some and telling others "I won't charge you, just buy a drink at the bar" (pfft yeah right... with those prices?) and me getting asked to leave for smuggling in a cheap beer, the night was a smooth success and we were in fantastic company, Kachun, Bigmad, Annsophie and partner, Rajyam an indian chap I met on the plane, Kenneth, Tsz Wo, myself and Mick. I didn't catch the first band, didn't matter because I really came to see Synthetic Insemination, who absolutely blew the entire crowd away with their mix of funk, 80's style electro and live drumkit breaks. They ... read more

Time for another update of life in HK… Quite a lot has been going on in the last week actually. I had my first Chinese festival - the mid-autumn festival, on Tuesday, which is a nice festival - celebrating the moon basically! There is an ancient Chinese tale about the festival, and it is celebrated in October, when there is a full moon. We went to Victoria Park on HK Island to see all the festivities and there were loads of lanterns around, and lots of families and children with lanterns. There were some stages set up in the park with Chinese shows on as well. In the grounds of the park, hundreds of families were sat round with candles, having dinner - it was really nice to see, and the moon was really bright. In ... read more

Wow, this is the first blog i've ever written, what a step in my advencement towards techno-topia! So, most of you know I'm currently living in Hong Kong. Mick and I share a flat on the ground floor with 5inch snails crawling through the garden = lush! We recently adopted a paralysed pigeon, Puff Digeon, but unfortunately he passed away a few days ago. Now i'm 2-wombs down, the girls have gone to China, and I'm travelling to Japan next week. Some may remember my friend Kei, japanese guy, afro the size of a house! I'm meeting him in his home town of Shizuoka. I will travel by train to Shanghai on tuesday and spend 5 days there sampling fine street delicacys before taking a two day ferry to Osaka. The last few weeks have been ... read more

well, the last few days have been a whirlwind of cramming in tourist activities, catching up with friends and just chilling out. first things first...... mickey and jess' flat in sai kung: i am staying there at the moment, and the tranquility is great. nice to be able to just cook food in the tiny kitchen and read a book all day. mickey and i have spent many a lazy day there, sleeping and reading and noodling on guitar. it's been a nice break, although i have quite enjoyed my tour of hong kong's parks, with little one in hand. sai kung is a village in the new territories (and therefore on the chinese mainland, although not actually part of china), and you have to take a couple of buses to get out there. luckily, the ... read more

After aclimatizing and adjusting for the time difference, we finally got motivated and decided to meet up with some family and friends. Tuesday we hooked up with our friends Doris and Bernard and went to Sai Kung which is known for seafood. When we arrived we took a Junk to an abandonned Salt Village and walked around. It was spooky. I have a shot of a house that was abandonned in 1992. Everything was left as is and the windows and doors left opened. Other houses were of the same and in more of a disarray. At the end of the day as you can see we stopped for a seafood snack! I can't believe I ate the whole thing! We are off to Japan next.... read more
