And so after many a trial the two intrepid (!) explorers arrived in hongkers. The first day (Monday) they arrived in the evening so we did not very much but the following afternoon after a lovely long jet-lagged lie-in we began chopping ingredients for that nights spring roll party. We are now definite experts at spring roll rolling :) lots of my sister's loud friends came and we chatted well into the evening aided and abetted by alcohol :) Wednesday was New Years and we were having a sort of multi-generational gathering at the club house near my place. along with my parents friends we managed to get hold of several of mine who had come back from uni and also Annie Wong, head of girls boarding at Caterham who was also back in HK from ... read more

Enjoyed seeing out the last of the old year after recovering from a hairy bus ride from the nearby village and a good walk along the coastline, when the clouds cleared and I saw planet Venus and the spectacular crescent moon for the first time in a week. The Australian's noted the lack of beer in the campsite and the Chinese would have noted the lack of Bai Jiu (rice wine that tastes like petrol). People from Hong Kong seem to enjoy excess of food consumption in favour of alcohol. Callum went to bed saying "it's Happy New Year tomorrow". When he woke up he wished me a Happy New Year and then after a quick tent exit he commented "Happy New Year isn't this cold". Nothing a bit of chocolate pirate gold couldn't fix! The ... read more

08h30 and Michael Lington’s soft saxophone is waking me up. I head for the bathroom and am ready and packed by 08h50. Having learnt from the previous day that one shouldn’t go into breakfast at 09h00 because that’s the time everyone else goes, I made a mental note not to go at 08h50 either; there were even more people there as a plane load of Aussie’s had checked in the previous evening. Foregoing the bacon, I settled down to watermelon followed by noodles, garlic green beans and chilli (with chopsticks) and, on finishing my coffee, made my way into the morning sunshine to stock up on lunch - Dutch rolls, raisin bread and Cranberry Danish Pastries, selected by taking a pair of tongs and loading the items onto a tray. Back at the hotel, I waited ... read more

Last weekend was a long one due to the Mid-Autumn festival, celebrating the full moon. We had the Monday off work, so on Sunday I decided to go on a camping trip, and little did I realise I would find a small piece of paradise in Hong Kong! Myself and 6 others met in Sai Kung and stocked up on barbecue supplies before taking a bus out into the hills. From there we walked for two hours through the countryside with fantastic views of the sea and the surrounding hills. Being a hot and humid day, it was a bit of a sweaty walk, but absolutely worth it! We went up and over a hill and descended down to the beach. On the main beach there was a restaurant where we sat down to a refreshing ... read more

Hi folks We've had another great week in Hong Kong, including a trip to Macau on the Chinese mainland. It's an old Portuguese colony that's being transformed into the Chinese Las Vegas, where Hanna revealed her terrible gambling problem, losing the money we won in Vegas a couple of years ago :( We're off to South America later today, which isn't a standard destination to fly to from Hong Kong. In what could prove to be the major lowlight of the trip, it's taking 29 hours to get there. Anyone with any travelling jealous issues should feel extremely smug over the next day or so, while the opportunity is there. We are still eating far too much - plan to do something about that over the next week or so. Perhaps. Love Dave & Hanna... read more

Hello everyone Here's the first of our Honeymoon blogs. We're hoping to do them on a weekly basis, or thereabouts. Just to state the obvious, we've landed safely, are yet to be killed or kidnapped, and are having a great time. We're staying with Peter and Zoe in a village just outside Hong Kong. It's great to have local knowledge, we've seen a load of stuff we'd never find in the guide books. Hope you like the photos, there are loads more that we can bore you with if/when we make it back. Send us a mail if you want to know more :) We are eating too much. Love Dave & Hanna x x x... read more

There's a little known fact about Hong Kong. Or maybe it's well known and I just think that no one knows about it... But Hong Kong has some stellar hiking treks and campsites. The best part about it is that you only have to take an hour long bus ride to get out to the countryside and have a little adventure in one of the many routes that lead to pretty cool spots. So Jimbo ,Marcelo, and I got ourselves about 4 gallons of water, some bread, a fifth of rum, and a fifth of scotch, and embarked on what would predictably be an intense bro-down. I seem to find myself in these situations a lot even though I really do try to avoid them... Anyway, the plan was to walk about 3 hours through Saikung, ... read more
