It's always comforting to know that if I ever have any dental issues on my trip, all I have to do is go to the market in Dali, and there, between the banana stand and the guy who sells nuts and bolts, I can expect to get the highest quality of service. The techniques used here are state of the art. A string for extricating those rotten teeth, your latest in plastic prosthetics and the "secret ingredient" mouth numbing syrup (although I would go for that 60 proof stuff that they drink here instead). I might even get a suntan while I get treated!!! ... read more

Hun ... read more

After getting back from the gorge, I hung out some more in Lijiang. As usual, the company makes much more of a difference than the place you are in, and in this respect, I couldn't have hoped for better. I managed to kill two days in Lijiang (and I say this in the best possible sense) just hanging out at Mama's, talking to people and generally not doing much. On a two month trip, you sometimes need some downtime. I planned for it to be in Dali, but ended up spending it in Lijiang. Towards the end of the week, I began feeling the wanderlust again and resolved to set off for Dali even though I could have seen myself just passing more and more days at Mama's. And so this morning, I finally got on ... read more

4/5/06 Got to pick up a tour group in Kunming by the 7th of May to Yuanyang. As it was the golden week holiday, so I took the chance to see a bit of outskirt Kunming by coming down few days earlier. it costed me a day to sort out which bus station for the destination I was heading to. 1st I went to HuangTuPo, no...it is for LuQuan direction, but still I took a local bus to MaJie, don't know what they'd to offer there only feel familiar with the name, and right...not much to write about but they said every Sunday there will be a huge market, but also said there will be no minority dress hill tribe could be seen too. Still...could be a good Sunday out if you happen to be in ... read more

The main attraction in Lijiang (besides the town itself) is Tiger Leaping Gorge. A gorge 900 meters deep and at some points, the width of a four lane highway. The TLG trek is about 25 kilometers over two days with a significant vertical climb (and descent). For the trek a group of people from Mama's organized and hired a minivan to get us to the starting point. And so, three hours after leaving Lijiang (an hour of which was due to what seemed to be the most disruptive road construction possible - there was just no road) we found ourselves facing a sunny day and 900 vertical meters of climbing. The group consisted of yours truly, Hadar and Ayelet (I imagine you notice the Israeli sounding names), Joanne, the sunburned Northern Irish girl (her own words) ... read more

Lijiang has undergone a decade long operation. The operation was a huge success. Incidentally, the patient is now in a coma. What was once a quaint town mostly housing the Naxi minority was earmarked for tourism development ten years ago. Ten years later, the once 30,000 strong Naxi minority living in the old town has dwindled to a few thousand. What has replaced it are souvenir shops run by Han Chinese (the majority in China). When you see a Naxi in traditional dress, he does so for the benefit of the tourists. the result is the saccharine feeling of Disneyland. You half expect someone dressed up as Naxi Mouse (whatever that may be) to show up and hug the kids. Sadly, this trend is quite prevalent across China, with perfectly nice little villages becoming the target ... read more

Statistics about the backdoor route from Chengdu to Lijiang (by descending order): 4718 meters is the highest point which I passed on the route. 1500 kilometers is the distance I covered, of which 300 kilometers are a dirt road which leaves you feeling rattled like one of those dashboard toy dogs. It took 37 hours (net) to cover the distance. 7 is the amount of times I heard the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album from start to finish, since it was the only music I had on my mp3 player. I didn't tire of it. 6 days is how long it took to cover the route. This is also the number of foreigners - individuals or couples - which I saw the entire time. Most of the time, people look at you as if you were a ... read more

Puhh hvilket doegn ind i Kina!

Asia » China » Yunnan » Zhongdian April 26th 2006

Driving out of Lijiang was kinda sad. We've had a wicked time so far in China and our time at the A Liang (free press, those guys are awesome) guesthouse had been particularly good. It was also the end of our independent travel for a while, as once in Zhongdian we are to meet up with three others and share a jeep for the 8 day drive overland into Lhasa, the Tibetan capital. We drove the same road that leads to Tiger Leaping Gorge and so the scenery was beautiful - pine forests, the rumbling river, mountains everywhere and blue, blue sky. I fell asleep for only 20 minutes and all this changed. When I awoke we had driven up onto a vast plain, dry and desolate it was populated by yaks as far as the ... read more
