Yunan Province Asia » China » Yunnan » Lijiang By Journey With MeJanuary 10th 2007Winter time is probably not the best time to visit Yunan province even though it was nice that there were probably fewer tourists. I got sick during my stay here so I probably wasn't able to enjoy the trip as much as I'd like. Nonetheless, it was a culturally enriching trip. Well worth a visit. ... read more

After some discussion, the G-6 (group of six) decided to venture up to the gorge and make a day trip out of it. There had been some speculation about doing it as an overnight journey, but after a while the merits of the day trip won out and we decided to go by local bus. We designated Lincoln and Nora to go on our behalf, and reimbursed them the 23 RMB cost of the tickets upon their return. About 10pm that night, we had a discussion with the guesthouse staff about getting out the next morning. The doors are locked up, and they could not believe that we would have to leave at 6:30 am. Finally, we showed them our tickets thinking this would finally do the trick. Quite the opposite, we found out that we ... read more

I met Cameron, Paul, Ian and Lincoln (all from the Gold Coast of Australia) on the way over to the Kunming long-distance bus terminal. During the 3 minute ride, we decided to form a travel group for our stay in Lijiang. This came in handy within the hour. Upon arrival to our 'sleeper bus' our driver was intent on taking bags of rice and other cargo in the passenger compartment (under the bunks) while putting our bags below. Since there were going to be many stops during the 12 hour ride, none of us were keen on this and we had a few yelling matches before he relented and allowed us to have some bags with us. He didn't try to get any of the locals to put their stuff below, so we were not having ... read more

I visited Lijiang Yunnan China from Nov 20 to Dec 1 2006 with my friend Asami. She has many local friends in Lijiang, and we visited their houses and did various experience there. When we arrived at Lijiang airport, Mr.Ma picked us up and moved to his aout apartment. The sky was so blue and I looked at the sky in wonder for a while. As you know, Lijiang is country side city and famous for old castle village. People are very friendly. Nature is very beautiful. The foods were a bit spicy for me, but its okay. We had a great time with local friends. Especially, staying native house expensive is incredible! They are taking good care of their family and relatives, and they welcomed us so much. We ate various foods and drank homemade ... read more

... read more

Lijiang is another 'old' city that has been rebuilt for the multitudes of Chinese tourists that come here. The old city is absolutely gorgeous, with many cobbled streets to explore. The local government has even standardised the lighting that all the houses use, so that at night the town is set alight with an atmospheric glow. The charm of the place is undisputed. But (and you knew there was a 'But' coming), and I understand the hypocrisy of such a statement given I myself I am tourist, the sheer number of people here and the subsequent artificial hike in prices takes away some of it. One morning in an attempt to get away from the crowds, we set out at 7.30am to catch some photos. But even at that time it seemed every Chinese Man had ... read more

Well well, Here we are in Lijiang, got in late on Friday night to get ushered into a sub-standard guesthouse (Nunny rating of 3) before venturing out into a maze of cobblestone alleyways lined with novelty shops and packed to the hilt with local tourists. The tour leaders with megaphones and little triangular flags were out in force again!! The tourists on the other hand certainly enjoyed a little dress up action (as in most parts we've visited so far) and opted for the "fox hat" (as in "wear the fox hat") a la Davy Crockett. They'd sport a mean looking rifle as well which didn't seem to phase the local security guards tooo much ;) The streets are fantastic if you have a shopping addiction like Michelle, you can buy all the crap under the ... read more

The flight only took about an hour from Chengdu and there was an airport transfer bus to Lijiang centre, where numerous taxis were available, so it was a pretty easy journey. The taxi dropped us just outside the old quarter as it is pedestrianised, then we made our way through narrow streets and alleyways to our chosen guesthouse, 'The First Bend Inn'. We've no idea how we found it - it was pure fluke as we didn't have a map of the area. The guesthouse is a traditional Naxi style house, the ethnic group of the area. The rooms are built around a central courtyard and were nice, clean and bright but quite basic. The toilets and washing areas were even more basic. The toilets were open plan. Thigh-high partitions and no doors on the Chinese ... read more
