Hi All, We wanted to go out and about around the lake today on bicycles but unfortunately the weather was against us. With getting wet climbing the mountain yesterday we didn't really fancy getting wet again so we went for a walk around the town. Dali is very small, compared with other places we've been, so it's very easy to walk from one side of the town to the other. The centre of town is very touristy but on the outskirts of the town there are still old houses and a vegetable market for the locals is still going strong in the north east part of the town. I've really enjoyed our time here and I wish it could of been longer. Dali is a great place to come if you want to relax. Enjoy the ... read more

First of all, it's Thanksgiving weekend in Canada so I want to properly thank all of my family and friends for their love, support, patience and understanding. I wouldn't be where I am today without any of it so thank you. I should also express my thanks to Tyler. He is my rock. There aren't words to describe what an amazing person he is; I'm so lucky to have found him and to be able to go on this journey with him. I couldn't have dreamed up a better man if I tried so thank you Tyler for my morning hugs, my bed time kisses and all of the other things you do in a day. China has surprised me every day. I've got to admit, I've written this blog 4 or 5 different ways and ... read more

October 1st is China's National holiday for which the majority of the country gets an entire week off. During this week, an average of 2.75 million people travel to the province we are currently in, Yunnan. For that reason, we wanted to find a nice little place to avoid the crowds for at least a couple of days. SHAXI Shaxi Village was the perfect place to do it. It's an ancient, dusty, wooden town that still survives from the millenia old Tea and Horse Trail which connected China with India and the rest of the world. This quaint little town has recently received tourism funding from the government. You can see that many renovations are being completed and there are more plans in the works uncluding a new highway which will cut at least half an ... read more

We decided to take a train to Dali. We actually wanted to take a taxi but the lady in the hotel reacted with horror. She seemed to think that the expense was much too much for us. Maybe something in our appearance? So we arrived at Lijiang’s very modern train station, only to find we had to get our cases up a near vertical flight of stairs to get to the platform. We both had about 20 kilos each. Micha was pushing me from behind. Somebody took pity on me about half way up and grabbing my suitcase easily hoisted it up the rest of the stairs. Poor Micha thought he was going to have a heart attack. But we finally made it on to the train. The train was really old. We sat downstairs on ... read more

Hi All, What a kerfuffell to get here. The sleeper coach from Shaoyang to Kunming, 17 hours, wasn't the most comfortable or the sweetest smelling ,a baby went to the toilet in the bin, nice! The driver of the coach was good though. I told him where we were going and he made sure we got to the correct bus station. We caught the bus from Kunming to Dali City all going good until we hit a traffic jam on the motorway. 3 1/2 we were stuck in this queue. The strange thing was that once the traffic moved there was no carnage, nothing. The journey was worth it though. A pretty little walled town which again was once a capital city, not of China, but of a kingdom that stretched into Burma. Today we went ... read more

I'm nicely ensconced back at the Jade Roo when who should I hear – but Marco cheerfully waving at me ! He's skipped Lijian and come down to Dali – hooray! I'm delighted to see him. He's a little firecracker from Hong Kong with sideyways hair cut; large tortoise shell glasses (which I later discover have no glass and are a fashion accessory) and a dramatic way of saying: “YEEEEES!” when he agrees with something. One of the highlights of Shangri-La amongst some very cold lows was the traditional Tibetan dancing they hold in the main square at 7pm every night. The bbq and jewellery sellers move to the sides and three old ladies in Tibetan dress start dancing to their music. A big circle forms and the tourists join in. Mark stands by the side ... read more

I wake up and still full of the verve and vigour of a month's training with a bunch of 18 year old boys I decide to trek up the mountain Cangshan. I try and follow the incredibly simple map to the start of the route and luckily being me – get lost and end up taking a motorbike for a quid up to the hiking entrance. I've packed some bao dzur (steamed buns filled with pork purchased for 60p) and a snickers for lunch. I've started my day in preparation by having a banana and chocolate pancake and a coffee – yum. After the hiking entrance which costs 30RMB its a steep 45 mins – 1hour walk up stone steps until it levels out to flat path. The walk up isn't particulary inspiring as the mountain ... read more

I decide to do my morning run to The Three Pagodas and Temple which is apparently about half and hours walk away. I take just enough money to go in incase I want to enter when I arrive. Its a hot and dusty day and after about 20 mins I get there and decide I may as well. The briliant Jade Roo and Jade Emu Hostel where I am staying (and cannot recommend enough) do excursions – and I discover are quite possibly the only hostel that don't try and rip off their guests by charging a premium for the privelege. When I get to The Three Pagodas I realise that a taxi and entrance fee would have been cheaper booked and done from the hostel than by running there and just entering myself. Extraordinary – ... read more

Our final stop in Yunnan province was the city of Dali, another of China's ancient cities. What I most wanted to see was Erhai Lake, China's third largest. Other than that, it didn't seem to offer much that Lijiang and Shangri-La didn't already offer - it had an old (walled) city with shops and restuarants, etc. In order to get to Dali, it was an 8-hour bus ride from Shangri-La. We left early on August 1st to make the trek. We thought that for such a long bus ride they'd give us a nice bus but we thought wrong. Thankfully our travel agent in Shangri-La (who was the same friendly Tibetan who organized our tour) got our tickets early and we were assigned the front two seats on the bus. Of course, this being China, some ... read more

Geo: 25.7, 100.15I would say that this was the biggest waste of time on the trip so far, as we spent less than 15 hours being able to do things here, including sleep. However, the guesthouse was stunning and the people that run it were lovely. Due to the short amount of time, and the extortionate entrance cost to the Pagodas, the afternoon was spent having a VERY long, much needed shower and chilling in the bar, with awesome food and plenty of it. It was a shame, not to go out and see the place, however i was not going to push myself too far and feel like hell again! ... read more
