Geo: 25.7, 100.15We were only planning to stay a couple of days in the small town of Dali and ended up staying for four days. Dali is a very old town where the first settlements are dated from 3000 years ago. Located at 1900m high, near the lake Erhai, the town is surrounded by mountains up to 4000m high. It is just an awesome place and you can judge by yourself when looking at the photos we took.I (Elfi) had the contact of a friend of a friend (Matthieu), his partner (Dorine) and their newly born daughter. We met the family in a park near the city centre. It's where we tried tea with "crisanteum" flower for the first time. They introduce us to the region and their circle of friends. It is how we got ... read more

Geo: 25.6955, 100.159Hello from a beautifully sunny and fairly warm Dali! I've definitely adapted to the slow pace of life in this province and no day is complete without a few stops at various cafés - going back to the city is going to be a shock! Haha This part of the trip all began with a fairly uncomfortable train journey. For reasons only known to those in control, a 2 hour journey warrants beds, not seats. However, lying down on said beds is seemingly forbidden so 8 of us hunched onto the bottom bunks (there are 3 levels of bunks) and there we sat invading each other's personal spaces and unable to move an elbow for the two hours. Arrival at this non-descript station was celebrated by a hundred people or so all yelling and ... read more

Thanks to the painful memories of some ultra-long (>12h) bus/train rides that have been seared into my mind the past year and a half or so, I decided to break up the journey to my next destination. Instead of taking the 17h direct ride to Dali, I made a quick overnight stop in the provincial capital of Kunming, which was also a sneak preview of things to come, as I do plan to return again for some more detailed exploration. Somewhat annoyingly, the 9h ride from Jinghong to Kunming was interrupted by not one, not two, but three military/police checkpoints, all of which demanded identification from every single passenger on the bus, and one of which even did an inspection of some passengers' luggages. Not particularly polite or professional in their approach, I wasn't exactly sure ... read more

Mountain bike tour in Dali (aim to the TV antenna tower on Cangshan Mountain, a uphill and downhill mountain bike riding routine) Dali is located on a average elevation of 1976 meters; There is a road beside the famous scenic spot Three Pagodas Park(it is also called “santa” in dialect). by riding on this road you can make it possible to reach the top of Cangshan Mountain. We so called it the top of Cangshan mountain because there is a TV antenna tower or the Cangshan TV Relay Station (it has the elevation of 4092 meters), which is the highest point that people can be there safely. Unfortunately, the road cannot lead you up to the highest peak, but at least, it will lead you at the place on the elevation of 3200 meters. At the ... read more

I woke up a bit earlier just in case there were any troubles in reaching the bus station – like getting lost when changing buses or taking the bus in the wrong direction for example… ;) Well… getting there couldn’t have been easier though – there was actually very good information at my hostel as to which buses to take and where to change so following the instructions I got there without any problems at all – 10 stops with bus 95, then another 10 with bus 80 and taraaa! …arrived at East Bus Station! And the journey cost me 2yuan only! Happy days! It was funny though when I was getting on the first bus, I let through an old Chinese man, he just couldn’t stop smiling to me later on and even wanted to ... read more

Dali Ancient City This place was WAY better than Kunming!! Oh man. Way nicer people and far better scenery. What's unique about Dali is that it's divided into the Ancient City and the new city, Xia Guan (lower town). The new city is modern; deluxe hotels and large shopping malls, while the Ancient City is a well-preserved relic from the 8th century. Nowadays, Dali Ancient City is mainly set up for tourist visitors. In fact, there's even a street named "yangren jie" which means "foreigner street" lined with shops selling bootleg CD's, crispy crust pizza, and cheap garb. The Dali Ancient City lies on the western edge of Erhai Lake. The altitude here is 6,330 feet, almost the same elevation as Lake Tahoe. Behind it soar the Jade Green Mountians and the awesome Cang ... read more

Leaving Weishan by minibus (23 Yunnan each), we arrived on the outskirts of Xiaguan (new city, 18 kilometres south of the old Dali) an hour later. We passed many small workshops making the stone pieces for use as tomb entrances. It would have been a major task carrying the twenty or so pieces of grey stone to where ever they were needed as they looked extremely heavy! The bus dropped us off on the highway at the edge of the city where we caught a moto taxi (5 yuan) to the train station where we knew we would be able to find transport to Dali. You feel quite vulnerable in those tiny little motorbike taxi amidst the traffic, particularly when surrounded by larger buses on both sides! We were really shocked at how the city had ... read more

Day 5Eryuan Hot SpringsFlat riding today except a hill just above Shaping as we left the top of Lake Erhai. This hill is on the edge of a quarry producing slate for roof tiles, pillars and other fancy stonework and marble for tiles and a huge range of vessels. These products can be seen at the side of the very narrow and busy road and in the small businesses producing them by hand and with very basic machinery. We saw ploughing with two water buffalos pulling a one furrow wooden plough and just behind it a large tractor ploughing with modern machinery. This was the sixth large tractor seen this trip as opposed to just one when I came three years ago.As we approached Eryuan we saw a coal briquette yard where coal is ground to ... read more

The beds are so hard that I am struggling to sleep. It took several hours and many shifts of position to get any sleep at all and the the next I heard was my phone ringing at 9am. It was our guide David wanting to know if we had gone to the wrong restaurant since he had not seen us. Us being myself and room mate Jeff from Oz. Today was a steady day roaming around the many streets of this ancient city established in 1382 but much of it rebuilt in the last 20 years or so as a major tourist city occupied by mostly Bai minority people in their distinctive white and blue dresses and fancy head dresses not unlike the American Indians without the feathers. The city is set out in a grid ... read more

Dali, City of Minorities Eight ’o’ clock breakfast of noodles and some spicy stuff, no bacon and eggs yet, and then off at nine following 42 miles round Lake Eyrian anticlockwise. No sooner had we set off than John’s pedal fell off as we were travelling through the edge of town. The threads were damaged so we put the pedal in from the other side to clear the threads and it went in again, thankfully, so off we went again. The ride north along the lake started with tar macadam which eventually reduced to dirt and loose stone. The scenery was very interesting with first of all fishing in the lake. There were boats out on the lake fishing with nets and many fishermen at the lake side with nets going out on ropes using winches. ... read more
