Tibet in December. We should be war generals, the way we strategized this one. Spent the birthday in Lhasa where at -6C, the man parts at age 29 are as nonexistent as they were at birth. Beyond the freezing weather, we were also afraid of the altitude sickness (much of the Tibetan plateau sits at 4000m or above). However, before that even hit, I got a bit ill from the plane. Carolee says I rely too much on potty-humour so I'll refrain from using any weights and distances but I will say that Bugles corn chips are now forever ruined for me (add that to swordfish, Myer's Rum, and marshmallow Peeps.) We did get a mild case of mountain sickness the first night. Lhasa itself is 3700m above sea-level and the air does get thinner up ... read more

October is an ideal time to visit Lhasa. What a joy to arrive to blue skies and golden leaves, to see the Potala Palace towering over the city, and to walk the Barkhor again. In late October, there are few tourists, just enough (in fact) to keep the restaurants open that serve western fare for the weary traveler. Parade of Pilgrims The Barkhor is the heart of Lhasa. It bustles with Tibetan pilgrims circumambulating the Jokhang temple and vendors selling everything from trinkets and T-shirts to fine paintings and jewelry. My host SV (now in her second year at Tibet University) and I take a stroll around and have lunch on the porch of the Gakyiling Restaurant, overlooking the Jokhang and the parade of pilgrims. In a series of coincidences, I run into a dozen or ... read more

Lhasa, Tibet, China Autonomous Region planes only fly in to Lhasa in morning when lift for plane is good so very early wake up call 5;30. previous day we had a wakeup call at 4:30 for a flight from Xi'an (Terra Cotta Warriors) to Chengdu (International Center for Research on Giant Pandas. arrived in Tibet on a sensational day, sunshine and 65 degrees. i did get to use my down vest IN hotel. am using it now. no central heat. heaters were ordered for our rooms but never appeared. western exposure of our room kept us toasty though and dry air helped our wash dry quickly. lots of Russian looking buildings including the hotel but beauty of monasteries makes one soon forget. stress of traveling caught up with all but a half dozen upon arrival in ... read more

Well this was proably the best day of monastery visists I have ever had....we were very fortunate that at Deprung we were able to see the monks chanting, sharing yak butter tea (which stinks and makes you want to gag immediatley) and also reading from their paper thin prayer books. This one has the largest amount of practising monks in Tibet about 700. In Sera monastery (500 monks), we were able to go into a massive courtyard and see monks debating with each other, generally they did it in pairs, one sitting down asking the questions and the other standing up answering them and for a finale they do a big clap (a sort of hong kong fuey chop) hence the pictures will look a little strange, but it was fabulous!! The following day the group ... read more

Today was the day for visiting the Potala Palace (winter residence for the Dalai Lama) and also his summer residence the Norbulingka all just East of central Lahsa. The Potala Palace, although very impressive was stacked out with tourists (Chinese were particularly pushy) and no photos were allowed in side but I did take a few door shots! When we got to the Norbulingka it was set in woods/parkland so a very nice chilled afternoon, as with most of the world it's Autumn here so the trees are shedding their leaves and it was great to walk around away from the hustle and bustle of town and beggars/pilgrims. Early evening (which became our ritual) a group of us all went to a cafe overlooking Bakhor and people watched! That evening we went to a very funky ... read more

Luckily for me, two friends on the group tour got up at sunrise as it was about 5c and took my camera off to take photos of the pilgrims and sunrise at Potala Palace so the first three are attributed to Luke and J! After a leisurley breakfast later I headed to the main square in called Barkhor square with the very religous temple at the end called the Jokhang. You do a circumambulation circuit of the temple (always with the temple on your right) along with hundreds of pilgrims. The people here are so friendly, gentle and very welcoming, all it takes is a smile and 'tachi delek' and they really aprreciate it! Yup there are lot's of pictures for me to choose from, I became a bit of a japanese tourist and will have ... read more

I only managed to get my pack stuffed in time for meeting up with the group to go to the airport only because I had left two full bags with the hotel concierge - I'll cross the issues of getting it stuffed for my India trip on my return to Katmandu. As ever checking in as a group takes a while but I was very fortunate to get a row 'B' seat which meant that I could take photos of Everest from the plane window....admitedly saved as little Jpeg's you don't get to see them very well, but blowing them up on my LCD screen on the camera it's just awesome! Landing at Lahsa airport you could feel the difference of altitude on walking short distances, our guipe Ghopal informed us that if you drank lots ... read more

Well, its hard to believe but today is our last day in Lhasa. We leave tomorrow morning for Chongqing which is south of Chengdu and the start of the Yangtse river cruise. The past 2 days we just roamed the streets of Lhasa enjoying all the sites. We also found out for $.70 per kilo we could ship all our cold weather gear to Shanghai, so we included a Tibetan horn and a few other misc items... 33 lbs lighter, our packs are back to where they should be @ 20lbs! We spent 2 days in Samye staying at the Samye Monastery guesthouse. We rode the pilgrim bus which was fascinating. The evening was very quiet and we enjoyed just walking around the area. The countryside reminded us of Idaho. Its been nice to see the ... read more

Just got back to Kathmandu from a tour that was supposed to be a 7 night 8 day tour with a flight back from Lhasa, Tibet to Kathmandu, Nepal over the Himalayas. What can I say - the Tibetian people are lovely and if you can switch of from the rules and regulations that the Chinese place on tourists and the Tibetians thenselves then you may have a great time. We started the tour from Kathmandu by bus to the border. The drive reminded me of travelling up to Skippers Crossing over Shot Over river in the South Island of New Zealand on a bigger scale. At the border we changed into old Land Cruisers, 6 in each car, asian driver, guide and 4 of us. We got 10 minutes over the border and the driver ... read more

Wow, we are here and it is awesome!! We are sitting at an internet cafe at the YAK hotel. Its high speed connection and as we wade our way through the Chinese Microsoft version, trying to remember which row some of our responses are on, it is a bit hit or miss!! We are on our 4th day here and appear to have adjusted to the altitude (13,000+). We leave on Sunday (Oct 2) for a 9 day trip, 4 days trekking to Everest Base Camp with a Spanish couple. So, we will be back on line @ Oct 12th. We have spent the past days just roaming the streets. There are lots of pilgrims with their prayer wheels in their traditional dress. So far we haven't taken too many photos, but we will once we ... read more
