Oh my legs...oh my legs...I can't do it anymore! I thought we were going to see the great wall.....not do a 10km hike along it in 34 degree heat! Thats wasn't part of the plan at all! Carrantouhill was enough for me! But alas, a relaxing day wasn't meant to be...So after a 4 hour drive from Bejing, its 10.30 in the morning and we arrive at a quiter section of the wall called Jhiangling. We all get off the bus and before any of us have chance to rethink what we have just let ourselves in for the bus door slams shut and the driver takes off with speed. Nothing for it now only to walk...so onto the wall we get and turn left (thats where the need for a guide finished!).....Long story short over ... read more

This morning Jane, Rhonda, Rochelle and I rented a car and a driver for the day to go to a section of the Great Wall at Simatai. This is a location about 110 km northeast of Beijing in Miyun County. It's about a 2 - 2.5 hour ride to get there with traffic. We met our driver at the hotel just after 8:00 am. He was a very nice man with a relatively new Buick van. After some introductions we were on our way. The day was overcast in Beijing but not nearly as hot or humid as the day before. Once we got to the outskirts of the city traffic really freed up. The scenery changed quite a bit as well. Everything was green and lush as we made our way into the country side. ... read more

Simatai - 11th December 07 Whilst in Beijing we put off the trip to the wall several times, as it involved an early start and most mornings we had a hangover. On our final full day in Beijing we did manage to get up early enough. Luckily it was a perfect, clear day, although it had been snowing the day before so it wasn't exactly ideal walking conditions. We went to a stretch of the wall in Simatai, which is quite a long distance from Beijing compared to other parts but we wanted to go there as it has not been as heavily restored. It's also very impressive as it has really steep plunges in parts and is very steep to walk up ! We arrived there after a taxi, a bus and then another taxi ... read more

After nearly a week in Beijing we left our hostel and drove 3 hours north to a remote section of the great wall, at Jinshanling. Mini bus transport is interesting in China. They're big fans of beeping their horns and overtaking on blind corners. Spent a lot of the journey with my eyes closed! At least there was a precarious pile of 12 back packs at the front of the bus to act as an airbag should we have needed it. The section of the great wall we went to was very remote, just us and a group of dedicated local sales people. We started the climb and didn't think it was a good sign when Sal was out of breath before we'd even reached the wall itself. There a moment of slight panic when she ... read more

Monday 7th January After seeing an exhibition on the Great Wall of China in Hong Kong during our visit there in 2002 we vowed then that it was a “must see and do”. Today we did it even though we had to battle with a few obstacles. The first was getting on the road by 0700 when it was still dark and the temperature -6 degrees. The second was sitting in a small car with 2 others plus the driver and having to travel for 3 hours each way with our knees up around our ears! The third was the actual walk/hike itself; walking 10kms of steep inclines on rough and a sometimes treacherous surface. As it turned out the last obstacle was the least of our problems even with Judy still trying to get her ... read more

Well, you know I didn't go to the Great Wall with the group, and therefore I missed getting in the group picture. But we live in the world of magic and photoshop, so when Mary gave me her print of the group photo I said I would add myself in and post it on the blog. Here it is. And to show that I have been to the Wall before, there's another picture of me and Chip on the Great Wall in August 2004. I am also including some of my favorite details of the sites I have already seen that were included in excursions from Beijing. These pictures were taken in 2004, mostly at the sites where the group toured around Beijing. Since I did not go on the tour excursions to the Wall, Forbidden ... read more

hello there, well as its been soo long since ive had time to sit at the net and ive left my book which lists every thing ive been up to i thought i wud do a quick break down of wat weve done since ive last spoken to you. ok we arrived in Beijing after a very long flight, i developed a cold and Sarah's eyes were streaming from the air conditioning. We arried to our hotel after nearly beeing completly ripped off by our taxi driver- but we got the hotel staff involved and refused to pay which was very good! No one speaks English in China and there are no signs in English so it really is difficult to get around by yourself unless you speak mandarin! We expected this language barrier but with ... read more

Setting our alarm is something we were looking forward to not having to do, so when my alarm went off at 7.00am i wondered what was going on until i remembered today was Great Wall day. Clothes on, grabbed our bags full of water and off down to the lobby to catch our booked tour to the wall. We had a choice of tours and we went for the least touristy one but for that we had to travel 4 hrs out of Beijing to a secluded and unrestored part of the wall. The coach turned up and about a dozen of us got on, we then preceded to drive to a few other hostels to pick up other wall goers including our train buddy Ant (his other half Lisa was feeling ill so didn't come). ... read more
