We have just started a nice few days of relaxation. Now obviously we can't claim to have earned it, but we'll enjoy it all the same. Sometimes when you are travelling everything seems to be going that little bit too quickly, and you never have a chance to step back and take it all in. Well we have arrived in Shanghai now, which means we have finished our last pre-booked tour. I think that we are both relieved and it is going to be fun actually arranging the travelling, rather than be whisked through the sites with a guide. Shaolin temple was a real eye opener about Kung Fu and the number of children that attend the school, even if what we saw was probably a more defensive / aggressive form of the ancient art, neglecting ... read more

We have had quite the busy weekend. The weather has been great. Cooler and sunny with clear, blue skies. Friday, after school, I treated myself to a pedicure. I went back to a place I had been to the month before across the street. I remember feeling very nervous and uncomfortable being totally unable to communicate besides pointing and miming my way through. This time, I had a very different experience. I chatted with the woman giving me a pedicure and she helped me practice my Chinese. She said I was great, to which I replied "mama huhu!" and she giggled at me just as I knew she would. Mama huhu means so-so and is the appropriate response when someone tells one who has not yet mastered the language how great he or she is. I ... read more

Shanghai seems like a place that's designed to amaze. The tallest buildings, the fastest trains, the biggest shopping malls, the biggest port. It's what I imagine Dubai to be like. We took a trip here on the Hangpu river which gave us fantastic views of the Pudong district skyline. Shanghai has a huge shipbuilding industry and you can see massive oil tankers and container ships in various states of completion. One dockyard had a gigantic overhead crane (like the ones in Belfast) which had collapsed over a half-built ship. Not sure how they explained that one to their customer.... Also here we went on the world's fastest train in public service. The Maglev runs from downtown Shanghai to the airport. It accelerates 430km/h in 3 minutes then spends the remaining 5 minutes slowing down. Because it ... read more

First off, let me say that I miss you all dearly on my birthday...I wish you could be here with me celebrating! But since I'm nowhere near wealthy enough to fly you out to China for the weekend, I'll share with you all the crazy twists and turns of my birthday weekend. The festivities basically started on Friday. Getting off of work that night at 6 was the most incredible experience...and my boss wished me a happy birthday HAHAH. That night we went to New Harbor as usual, and had some good 'ol fashioned Lazy Susan dinner (for those of you in the audience who haven't tried that yet, it's the traditional Chinese dinner on a spinning glass top...but I'm pretty sure you've all experienced it. I digress). Then we decided to hit up this ... read more

This past weekend, Lu and I made a discovery: we like event planning. This isn't to say we're going to major in it, but we've taken quite the interest in planning out sightseeing activities and birthday parties. We have quite a few birthdays to celebrate, with one celebrated this past weekend and another today (Lynn's last week and Evan's now). The work week last week was the longest week of my life. By the time Friday came around, the other interns realized that their projects were useless. Since my task of contacting airlines seemed to be the only one with any prospects of success, my supe (white-collar slang for supervisor) gave me the task of managing my own team of interns. Hehe I quite like management. I got to delegate my "sales force" tasks like ... read more

Nee hao, So I'm at my cubicle at the GreenTree right now :) We just went through 3 hours of training (oy vey!) and then had a lunch break and then 1.5 more hours of training. The most exciting thing all day has been the acquisition of our very own GreenTree binders, which is going to make this experience far more official than we thought. Actually, this has become less of an internship and more of a legit job. We even have quotas (sell 500 room nights within 9 weeks), but it's not like we get fired if we don't hit them. My task here is to sell rooms for Beijing during the Olympics...but I have no idea if I have to make cold calls. I don't know if I can live up to the telemarketer ... read more

So, here we are once again back in Shanghai. We had an amazing time seeing the Terra-Cotta warriors in Xi'an, China. We were in Xi'an on Monday. It turned out that we got a really good deal on plane tickets so we were really happy. The only downfall was that Giles and I both came down with a cold/flu the day before we left. We were lucky, though, because it only really affected us on Monday and didn't get in the way of any fun. We spent Monday evening looking through the market and angering the locals with our skillful bargaining. On Tuesday, we took an overpriced tour package to a variety of places. We were picked up from our hotel and our "English" speaking guide ask us where we would be going that day. Needless ... read more

For those of you who have not been able to have the experience of taking a 10 hour over-night train ride, let me tell you. It's quite the experience. Our adventure started as we were dropped off at the train station by our speedy taxi driver. I would like you to make a note at this point and mention that the words speedy and safe are not used in the same sentence when referring to a taxi driver. Giles and I boarded the train leaving Shanghai on route to Huang Shan, China. We were told by our Chinese friend Mia that our tickets were for the bottom and top bunk in room 9. So,prior to the trains arrival, Giles and I had agreed that I would get the top bunk. After many years of letting my ... read more
