Jing An Travel Blogs

Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

...helps to while away some hours on a Sunday afternoon, while we wait for the yin.
Hey all, Well, as the title suggests...it's been very yangy around here of late. But then after living here for over a year now, you'd think we'd be used to that. However, after a succession of yang (bad?) happenings: losing our internet, getting locked out of our apartment, and then discovering Roel's bike was stolen -- we were hoping for the yin (good stuff?) to reappear, because after all bad things come in three's we thought...but we guess that's a western truth, unknown to the eastern gods, since the yang, yin, or whatever you want to call it, keeps coming. Bundy Beers

Asia » China » Shanghai » Jing An
67 days after beers in the Black Lion we arrived in Shanghai on a warm afternoon and were met by the friendly faces of Helen and Orlando at the chaos of Shanghai railway station. Before we knew it we had dropped off our bags and were enjoying cold Tsing Tao and fresh sandwiches(without the usual chinese sweet bread) looking out over sunset from about the 15th floor! Afterwards we regailed travelling stories around Shanghai's buzzing bar scene, which included some rather bizarre serbian music and dancing in a French Concession bar. The next day feeling rather hungover, we relaxed around Jin [View Full Entry]

We have just started a nice few days of relaxation. Now obviously we can't claim to have earned it, but we'll enjoy it all the same. Sometimes when you are travelling everything seems to be going that little bit too quickly, and you never have a chance to step back and take it all in. Well we have arrived in Shanghai now, which means we have finished our last pre-booked tour. I think that we are both relieved and it is going to be fun actually arranging the travelling, rather than be whisked through the sites with a guide. Shaolin temple [View Full Entry]

Who are you?
As Jill mentioned before we went to Shanghai for four days. It was a Chinese national holiday and somewhere I heard (O'malley's Irish Pub) that there were around 480 million Chinese traveling that day. I don't know how true that was, but out of the normal 20 million people that live in Shanghai I think there might have been an extra 100 million more people. I have never nor do I ever want to travel within China on a national holiday that's why Jill and I will be planning a trip outside of China for the Chinese New Years. If anyone [View Full Entry]

Shangahi, yay, fun!! Wow, the national holidays are fun filled and people filled...Shanghai made it onto the national news just due to the sheer number of people, a trad Chinese proverb kinda thing (oh no, not quoting chinese proverbs already!) goes 人山人海 ren shan ren hai; literally mountains and seas of people..didn't we just chose the best time to go to Shanghai?! It was cool though, we set off early, I had to get up at like 5:45...I finally had the Chinese breakfast things (normally I must admit I don't get up in time...), which I bought from a woman on [View Full Entry]

We have had quite the busy weekend. The weather has been great. Cooler and sunny with clear, blue skies. Friday, after school, I treated myself to a pedicure. I went back to a place I had been to the month before across the street. I remember feeling very nervous and uncomfortable being totally unable to communicate besides pointing and miming my way through. This time, I had a very different experience. I chatted with the woman giving me a pedicure and she helped me practice my Chinese. She said I was great, to which I replied "mama huhu!" and she giggled [View Full Entry]

A very different commute

Asia » China » Shanghai » Jing An
I decided to go home a different way yesterday as I think you can miss a lot by whizzing everywhere on the metro. So, instead of going straight from Jing'an Temple to Zhongshan Park and changing lines to get home, I got off a stop early at Jiangsu Road and walked from there. It was a lot easier to navigate than I had expected (considering that getting lost is one of my specialties!). The road signs are pretty straightforward and a lot of them have N, S, E or W on them so you can get an idea of the direction [View Full Entry]

Shanghai, China

Asia » China » Shanghai » Jing An
Shanghai seems like a place that's designed to amaze. The tallest buildings, the fastest trains, the biggest shopping malls, the biggest port. It's what I imagine Dubai to be like. We took a trip here on the Hangpu river which gave us fantastic views of the Pudong district skyline. Shanghai has a huge shipbuilding industry and you can see massive oil tankers and container ships in various states of completion. One dockyard had a gigantic overhead crane (like the ones in Belfast) which had collapsed over a half-built ship. Not sure how they explained that one to their customer.... Also h [View Full Entry]
