If you ever make it to Weihai, you've got to search out Farmer's Pizza. Even though they use ketchup instead of pizza sauce (I'm told you can't tell the difference) they will accommodate the pickiest of eaters (I'm referring to myself here.) I always get the vegetable pizza without sauce. Since MSG is laced in everything, I didn't want to take any chances. The owner was honest enough to admit that the dough was pre-made and she didn't know if there was any MSG in it. Turns out, if there is, it's not enough to make my ankles sell up. So veggie pizza it is! We ventured down town to the see the tailors (that's another story) and got a bowl of hot noodles, flat bread, soft snugly blankets (for 30 quai each) and date bread. ... read more

This morning promised to be a nice day, maybe a little overcast, but nice. Wrong! It has turned into a windy, blustery day. Since the construction workers that worked on this building obviously didn't know how to seal a window properly, the wind just howls right through the glass panes. Someone please show these workers how to seal a window properly! We also have a black mold problem and the building is only a year old! And now for something completely different... On Sunday a gang of us went to this Japanese noodle shop. I had a big breakfast and only ordered dessert. Everyone else ordered either huge bowls of soup or fried rice. Personally, I prefer the hot pot shop, but this place was OK too. I had eaten there once before. It was the ... read more

Yesterday was a fun day in Wiehai, First, we went to Da Fu Yuan. I brought my carry on luggage with me because I knew that all the water bottles I wanted to buy would be too heavy to carry. Apparently, you have to check your stuff in at a counter on the downstairs level. Which I thought was going to be a hassle, but it turned out to be very convenient instead. Once we got home, You Know Who was hungry. So we went to this little restaurant that the other expats like to go to and ordered beef and tomatoes, by D's request, might I add . Something got lost in the translation and we got beef and potatoes instead! The owner was nice enough to bring D a dish of tomatoes on the ... read more

Another evening with the girls, shopping at Jusco... First we went to Chalm and had dinner. It was OK, but there was MSG in the cole slaw they put on my sandwich. It was probably in the mayo. How Ironic "Mai yo wei jing" means, "there' s No MSG in there," I think or something similar to it. Ha, ha, get it? Mai yo/mayo? On the way to Jusco, I found a lovely pair of pillow cases. Actually, I think they are more like pillow shams. So soft...it's also a lovely paisley print. Creme background with a little paisley pattern in a darker beige. The linens and blankets here are usually a bright floral print. That's just not my style, 'ya know? So when I saw these shams, I jumped on it. They had the most ... read more

Because my school is located in the foot hills of what passes for mountains around here, it means that we are about a 30 minute drive to the 'burbs, which is where I live. I took some footage of the drive home before my camera battery died. Most of the excitement is along the main drag. I'll try to get more footage of the near misses and crazy driving antics at some point in the near future. We had three near misses while driving in to school today and witnessed another near five as we were sitting on the bus waiting for it to depart.... read more
