Hi All, Last day in Yushu. With nothing to do for the day I did some walking. In the morning I walked up the mountain side to where there is some Tibetan writing. It was done with white stones. Unfortunately I don't know what it says and I've found very few people here who can speak English so I can't ask anyone. It was lovely to sit and look out over the city. With the altitude here, 3300 metres (10,824 ft), it was a real struggle to get up there. After lunch I went for a walk in the north-western part of the city. I found a huge prayer wheel, a chorten, some mani stones and a really big chorten that had again earthquake damage. This chorten was in a park which appeared to double up ... read more

Hi All, Again nothing much to see as the monastery was being rebuilt. It was hard work walking up to the monastery but it was worth it. The view over the town was something else. I also found some buildings that were still standing from the earthquake. In the evening we went out for a meal in a Tibetan restaurant. We had a yak dish, a tofu dish and a potato dish. We also had yak butter tea. The food was lovely but I must admit I wasn't too keen on the tea, a bit sickly. On the way back to the hotel we saw a fight in the street. Well I say fight, a lot of pushing and shoving and chasing people up the street. Nothing pulls a crowd like a street fight. It gave ... read more

What a bus trip. It took 18 hours from Xining to Yushu and the roads got worse the closer we got to Yushu. The trip was pretty spectacular with most off it being over 4200 metres, 13,776 feet, and the highest point being 4812 metres, 15,783 feet. I chose for us to travel on the seated coach which was a mistake. It left at 11 o'clock in the morning and I thought that we'd be there for around midnight, how wrong I was. Once we'd arrived, 5am, we had to wait around for it to get light. First I must explain about the area where we are. It was hit by a devastating earthquake in 2010 which completely destroyed the town and the surrounding area so our map of the town is completely useless. We eventually ... read more

Hi All Just outside the town there is one of the largest mani walls in the Tibetan world. Mani are stones with buddhist mantras carved or painted on them. This is certainly a sight to behold and there are lots of pilgrims walking around the stones and chorten. After a spot of lunch we went to find the monastery that we could see when we arrived at the bus station. Little did we know that it was a building site. New temples and monasteries and convents were in the process of being built. As we were walking around we bumped into some young guys who were doing the decorative paintings and they took us into the main hall and showed us around. They took us all the way to the top. I just cannot believe how ... read more

OK, I will try this entry again. I had written for 20 minutes about the beauty of this land, and then the manager of this internet cafe in Zadou pullled the plug, the hour done. No bother to ask if I wanted to continue, no warning, may I add very annoying! However, this is China and I am in the middle of nowhere so I shouldn't be surprised at anything that happens here. I realized it is hard to count on anything here, like times and plans and schedules, I just didn't expect to be shut down without warning, but hey it goes with the territories of expectations. Now I will save this as a draft and hope my entry doesn't get shut down again. OK, so the ride from Xining to Yushu was amazing and ... read more
