The girls had lessons in the morning and an interesting session of learning the art of sewing from a master - the trick of sewing it right is that they have to look beautiful both upside and down as well...Ruo Shuang thot she did a good job until her buddy pointed out to her...hmmmt the underside needs to be just as nice :) A tough job for our nygh gal! U can see a sample in the pix below - but remember these are professionally sewn... Night time - some of our girls were given a treat to crabs - it being the season to eat crabs in Suzhou now.. The girls have fun attending lessons in class and learning all the terms in mandarin. Some girls even had a taste of crabs ...as it's the season for crabs now. Weather's great - between 12 to 22 degree and our girls formed an impromptu team to play soccer against the Xing Hai girls. Some were captivated by their handsome teachers....and found lessons more interesting :) Hands on paper cutting session was a fun time for all - esp to those who discovered that they can do a complicated design effortlessly...*grin..for others...it proved to be quite challenging !! Even Physics teacher, Teresa couldn't resist having her "xuang xi" cut out in various sizes... Home was cosy for the girls and the host families were all out to pamper their singapore friends...Beiyu has a room with a good ... read more

Today we arrive safely in Suzhou, China to beautiful weather and a nice surprise. The girls and myself were pleasantly surprised to see the setting sun enroute to Suzhou Industrial park and to many of them, it reminds them of the "egg yolk" in the mooncake ! We were ushered into a reception hall where we were introduced to the parents and students who would be hosting our girls for the two weeks in Suzhou. ... read more

I forgot to tell you about text messaging in China.Almost every one of the 1.3 billion Chinese has a cell phone, well perhaps not everyone but every 20 something, of which there are millions, has a cell phone and all of them are text messaging ALL the time.Thumbs are flying and messages are shooting through the air waves.During the show last night the conga player was text messaging while on stage!!! People are biking and messaging and Noah and his friends are constantly in touch. It is cheaper than phoning apparently and you would be hard pressed to find someone without a cell phone in his hand... read more

After a late night of Nanjing bar cabbing we were up far too early but as it is our last full day here it had to be done.Walked a few blocks and tried another restaurant.Good news an english menu so my foggy brain was not challenged and the resultant meal excellent. After breakfast we tok a cab to see the mausoleum of Dr Sun Yatsen the father of modern China who came up with the three principles of the people, Nationalism,Democracy and the People's livelihood.Again it seems we were not the only ones with such a plan for the day.The place was swarming with buses and cabs and people by the thousands. As we approached a small girl came up to us with her parents closely shadowing. She launched into a little speech introducing herself and welcoming us to ... read more

Well we awoke early yesterday and snuck out to not disturb the sleeping hosts. One of the symptoms of working in bars at night is an aversion to mornings.Ann had a desire to eat some street food and we wandered around Noah's neighbourhood. There was a line up at a small place serving some sort of pastry or so it looked coated in some roasted black seeds? Not sure what exactly it was but it was popular. We wandered on and found a stand with a man eating a steaming bowl of noodles. A few points and nnods later and we were sitting and eating our own bowls of noodles and vegetables. The smiling woman seemed happy and as always curious about us and i think even may have complimented us about our chop stick work.We had some fried bread ... read more

We are up at 5 am packed and ready to go by 6:30.The ship has packed a breaqkfast for us and a young looking guide arrives promptly at the appointed hour. She does not speak much english but takes us on a tour of the Three gorges Dam anyway. This pam project is the largest construction project in the world and they are still building another power generating station to house another 14 generators as well as a ship elevator to lift container ships up to the river elevations. The things is huge and while hazy/foggy you could feel the power of the water flowing out of the sluice gates. We are deposited at the bus station in Yi Chang for the 5 hours bus ride to Wuhan. We slept a bit on the half empty bus but ... read more

As the sun rises we pull into Nanjing station, groggy but anxious to meet Noah. It feels like the half of China that is not already on the train with us is waiting on the other side of the barrier to meet thier loved ones. Peter and I are getting used to the crowds, but today is particulary bad as China begins a week's vacation to celebrate its 50th anniversary. As we move with the mass we quickly spot a local man with the Peter Richard Speak/L. Ann Speak sign bearing tickets to be used on Tuesday on to our next leg of the journey. After some searching we connect with Noah and head off to his big and modern apartment, meeting his flat mates and friends. His Chinese sound pretty fluent as he negotiates the ... read more
