After Howard's graduation, my aunt and uncle flew back to Sydney. My parents, cousin, and I rented a car and drove to Gold Coast. Gold Coast is known for its long continuous beach and golden sand. There sand is actually softer than ours. My cousin and I decided to book a tour in Gold Coast. It was with Adventure Ducks. They have large buses that can transport people on land and water. We didn't tell my parents this because we wanted it to be a surprise. When we arrived to the bus, my mom commented on the bus telling me that it looks weird. I had my camera ready to catch their reaction when we went on the water. Before we headed for the water, you could see my parent questioning whether the vehicle would actually ... read more

Well, finally in Australia. The whole point of the trip was for my family to attend my cousin, Howard's, graduation ceremony. He is the first one to be a doctor in our Chan family. Everyone is very proud of him and, of course, it's always nice to have a doc in the family. It comes with perks! =) On December 14th we flew to Brisbane to attend the graduation ceremony. BTW, Australia has 6 states and Brisbane is in Queensland. We arrived in Brisbane at around 7am. While my cousin ran around doing errands, my parents and I roamed around exploring the city. When it came time to the graduation ceremony, we rushed to the University and sat through the whole thing. 300 Med students graduated that day. In Australia, doctors do not choose their specialization ... read more

Destination Hong Kong

Published: December 13th 2007Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon

My first destination was Hong Kong. I didn't do much for the first day. I just roamed around the Kowloon Island. Before I left, Monique told me I had to try this dessert place called Healthy Desserts. All their desserts are made of fresh fruit and fruit juice. Well, it was not hard to find this dessert place. It was on every corner of the city like Starbucks back at home. The place was very good and tasty =) My Dad and I decided to join a tour to visit Hong Kong's touristic sites. One of the famous sites is the Po Lin Monastery. You know how everyone wants to be the biggest or largest of something? Well, the Po Lin Monastery is the largest SITTING Buddha statue in the world. The Buddha is sitting on ... read more

Last days in Tibet

Published: May 18th 2006Asia » China » Tibet » Lhasa

For the last day in Tibet, we decided to watch the sunrise. One of our group members said we should wake up at 4:30am. So we all did, but the sun didn't rise until 7:30...yeah, we were freezing our booties off. The national guards thought we were crazy foreigners. I think I have to agree with them. The whole purpose for waiting for the sunrise is that one picture you see...The ONE MILLION DOLLAR PICTURE OF POTALA. Was it worth it? hmmm..I still have to think about it. Tibet was an experience. I also have to say it will be my first and last time visiting the place. The views and scenery were soooo awesome and soooo beautiful, but I don't know if I am willing to suffer the torture of high altitude sickness. The scenery ... read more

The following day we took a 5 hour bus ride to the next largest city in Tibet, Rikaze. We visited a temple there. Very beautiful temple with it's beautiful view. So, at this point, I still have not fully recovered from my high altitude sickness. My body has not gotten use to the high elevation. So, if 3,000 meter was not high enough, our next destination was the highest salt lake in the world, the Holy Namtso Lake. This lake is about 4,500 meters high. Oh my god, I felt like I was going to die! You take it for granted that most of the countries we come from have cars that have suspension and the road we ride on are relatively smooth. I know in the states when we hit a bump or something that ... read more

Yak Yak Yak Tibet!!!!!!!!!

In China, they have a one week labor day called May Holiday. For May Holiday, I went to Tibet. I went with my group of Americans. We to Tibet by plane and arrived in the largest city in Tibet, Lhasa. Lhasa is about 3,000 meters above sea level. Once, I got off the plane I immediately felt a little light headed. I was breathing hard and my heart was pounding like crazy. Yes, I had high elevation sickness. After getting off the plane, we had to take a bus from the airport to the hotel. That took about an hour. We checked into the hotel and I felt worse. I was heating up and shivering.... I layed in bed while a wannabe doctor came into my room stuck some needles in me. Ok, this part I'm ... read more

Ancient City of Ping Yao

Published: April 16th 2006Asia » China » Shanxi » Pingyao

For the weekend, I visited the ancient city of Ping Yao with five other people. Ping Yao is a city enclosed by a city wall. It is use to be the center of all financial transaction. The city wall that surrounds the city protected the city from intruders and enemies that wanted to rob the city of its wealth. All of the ancient architecture is still perserved so you are able to see how the Chinese in the ancient days lived. A lot of the Kung Fu movies are filmed here. Ping Yao is a 5 hours train ride from Beijing. From Ping Yao, went travelled to Taiyuan which is the city next to Ping Yao. Taiyuan is famous for its twin Pagodas. These Pagodas are identical and stand 55 meters. We were actually able to ... read more

I was going to publish this entry for a long time and I just totally forgot all about it. Sorry about that. Anyways. Taiwan was a lot of fun. I'd have to say this is the best place I've visited so far. People are nice, food is awesome, and there's lots to do. Main story in Tapei: I was on a mountain top village market. I was walking, going to cross a street. I saw a girl from afar and thought to myself, "dang...that girl is hot...." Crossing the street and getting closer to the girl. Ok...maybe she's ok... not exactly hot but very cute. All of a sudden, FLASH FLASH FLASH! People started rushing towards me with cameras in their hands. The last time I checked I wasn't a celebrity. HAHAHA Well, they were not ... read more

Taichung was a fun city. There were many sites to see and lots of food to eat. The main attraction in Taichung was the Aborignal amusement park. Taiwan was not always inhabited by mainland Chinese people. Taiwan actually had Taiwanese people. They can be compared to the Native American Indians in America. The aborignals have several tribes spread out throughout Taiwan. However, there are less and less aboriginals because many of them have mixed in with the Chinese blood. So it's kind of interesting. Well, during this trip I was reading, "The Five People You Meet In Heaven." The main character dies because of a amusement park ride (don't worry I didn't give away the story...the guy is dead from the begining). So, right when I finished the book, we arrive at the amusement park.....hmmmmm....scary. Yeah, ... read more

I arrived in Kaohsiung, Taiwan which is southern Taiwan. The plan for the tour is to arrive in southern Taiwan and make our way up to northern Taiwan. My big uncle book this tour for me so I didn't know what to expect. When I arrived, I met my tour group. To my surprise I was the youngest one in the group. Everyone else was old enough to be my parents. This is was not a bad thing. It was just that they actually treated me as if they were my parents. Later in my travels, I got couples telling me: Couple 1: "Ay ya, wear more clothes..you're going to catch a cold" Couple 2: "Oh yo, don't eat so much of that fruit, you'll get constipated." Couple 3: "Geeee, why you still single...such a shame..." ... read more
