The school year is officially over as of last Friday and most people have headed back to Canada for the holidays. We are sticking around for a couple more weeks and heading out on July 19. It has been a busy month since my last entry with exams, end-of-year parties, hospital stays, and moving days. The weather has been incredible for a long time. Other than a few thunderstorms, it has been in the 30s for as long as I can remember. On a good note, I get my new CJ750 motorcycle on Sunday...on a bad note, Nancy was released from the hospital last week after being in for a week with pneumonia. I am down to the last English novel I have in the house, a copy of Gone With the Wind that I picked ... read more

Another weekend, another party, another lesson on the sidecar. Last night, it was birthday party time for one of the teachers here in Vanke, complete with a fireworks display. At midnight we moved to a local club to carry on the festivities. We only stayed till 2 in the morning because we didn't want to be too tired and hung over for our ride today. The others partied till the wee hours of the morning. Today, we went for a ride through Ma'an Mountain Forest Park, another large park in Wuhan on the side of East Lake. The skies were clear and the temperature hovered around 35 Celsius for the day. The hot weather is supposed to continue for the foreseeable future. Tom and Jhon are slowly introducing me to the intricacies of driving this monster ... read more

More incredible food, beautiful weather, and vintage motorcycles…..it all added up to a great fun-filled Saturday as Nancy and I were introduced to the world of Chang Jiang 750cc sidecar motorcycles. Since we moved here, I have been checking out these things on the internet as a potential move to a bigger bike but did not think they could be licensed/registered in Wuhan. The city passed laws in the late 90s that prevent the licensing of larger motorcycles. However, I have since found out from my new-found friends/dealers/restorers that they can be registered and licensed though a nearby town and then are legal to ride here. These bikes have a long history () and are basically 1938 technology! Today, they have a cult following inside China and around the world and the sky’s the limit as ... read more

Welcome to our last blog (on this website anyways) from China. We have had issues the last little while connecting to this website, so we haven't been able to post a lot. However, we now have our own website and we've also signed up for flickr so we can share our photos and stories with you just as easily. I have sent an email out to everyone on our mailing list - if we missed you by accident, we're so sorry. Please email us directly for the links - I'd rather not post them on this public site where anyone can see them. We took a trip last weekend, and it was so much fun! We saw the Three Gorges Dam, the city of Yichang along the Yangtze River, toured through Jingzhou (an ancient city with ... read more

Another year, another English Arts Festival! For the past couple of weeks, Maple Leaf has been treated to the talents of our growing student population as they competed in various categories of the school's English Arts Festival. Whether it be singing, short skits, poetry reading, or poster contests, everybody was given the opportunity to show the rest of us how well they are learning the English language by participating in this festival. The grand finale was the production of this year's musical theatre production, Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum. It never ceases to amaze me how these kids can progress from barely speaking English two or three years ago to a point where they can memorize this many lines in a second language, as well as act and sing their hearts out. Most of those who participated ... read more

Wuhan it is then. As mentioned in the last entry, I met up with a few uni students on the train from Xi'an that wanted to show me around the city. Spent a bit of time around their university, then off to the Yellow Crane Tower which is probably this city's claim to fame, then onto a boat across the Yangzi. This city is huge.....had never heard of it before but turns out its bigger than Sydney. It used to be 3 different cities separated by a couple of rivers (Yangzi & Han) but has exploded into one big-un. Had a great time with the new mates & the Yellow Crane Tower is defo worth a look. Not much else happening here though to keep me around more than a couple of days. Booked myself on ... read more

Well, I’ve been bad about updating this. My things have settled into a lovely routine. My life still revolves around my classes, and my free time is incredibly limited, but I don’t consider that to be a bad thing. I’m more or less ridiculously happy, except for when I’m sick (which is far too often. The air here does nasty things to my throat and lungs.). For a long time I was trying to make the decision to either stay in Wuhan, or seek out a healthier Chinese city. Today I finally made up my mind to stay, and talked to my boss about it. I’ll be able to keep the same kids next year, and do the same thing I’m doing now, and I’ll get a raise of 500 yuan a month. My place here ... read more

Once again, two weekends in a row. Lisa was host to food fests that continued into the evening. I tried to pace myself with the food to no avail. There is always too much and it is always too good. Earlier in the day, last Saturday, Nancy and I were treated to a great lunch at a wonderful Chinese restaurant in downtown Hankou. One of our Chinese friends picked us up at our place to take us to a PR show that was organized by her husband, who works for one of the major papers in town. It was rained out so we ended up being wined and dined instead. During the car ride to the show, we had a great conversation about the Chinese media and what it is like to work for a major ... read more

First, I must apologize to all of you at home who are NOT on Facebook, and who have not been updated about our lives for a few months now. The last two months have been rather insane, both in our professional lives (the school in which we teach) and our personal lives. Due to the rather sensitive nature of the issues, I won't get into what has happened in our personal lives, but if you feel you can offer up any prayers, we'd sure appreciate it. I will do my best to update you on the last two and a half months. The day after we changed apartments, we headed back to Beijing, and spent two weeks there. It was really nice, we had time to see things that normal tourists don't, and Chris really enjoyed ... read more

I know….I am definitely slipping on the blog entries. As we settle more and more into life in China, it seems to be taking a back seat!! Of course, it hasn’t helped not having internet at home for the last few weeks. Last week, we visited yet another area of this massive city, the ‘wholesale district”. It is pretty easy to describe…take a ton of products that China exports to other countries, place them all in one area, and sell them at wholesale prices from hundreds of small shops. Once again, it was a shopaholic’s dream! The amount and variety of merchandise was overwhelming. As usual, the vast majority of stuff was clothing and textiles but everything else under the sun was also available. We ended up buying a little clothing and an area rug. It ... read more
