London to Adelaide Without Flying

Travelling from London to Adelaide without flying.

March 4th 2009 to.....don't know.....however long it takes. Though hoping to be in Adelaide by the end of May.

I'll be posting some pics and anything of any interest every now and then, mainly for my benefit, but feel free to jump in and take a butchers. There is a map also that will show the route I'm taking. Leave any comments you want, especially regarding places you could recommend I should visit.

Until I head off though I thought I'd add a few entries showing the travelling I've done in the last few years......mainly to show my ma and pa, but your welcome to check 'em out.

Anyhooo, I'll keep you posted.

Cheers,
Shane.

Cambodia it is then, Spent a few days longer than needed in Phnom Penh, not a lot there unless your a stoner or a pimp. Hired a tuk tuk for a few hours with a mate Dave to see the killing fields and the S1 prison where the Khmer Rouge did some nasty work. Jumped on a bus to Sihanoukville where I caught up with the old man for 4 days....he's living in Thailand so was just a quick flight for him. Sihanoukville is just a small beach town with not a great deal of things to do except beer it up on the beach.......except that it pissed down most of the time we were there.....excellent. From Sihanoukville I bussed it up to Seam Reap where the Angkor Wat and a number of other interesting temples ... read more

Howdy. Righto, from Hanoi I headed south to Hoi An. Its just one big tailor shop really....with a couple of sights (Marble Mountains and the Cham ruins) and a beach thrown in for good measure. Probably spent too long here, but in no hurry so not to worry. Hired a motorbike for a day to do the sights, started well but had two blowouts and got myself royally lost.....didn't end well. Not sure how I got lost but I was miles wrong....had to go village to village asking "Hoi An...Hoi An", they all seemed to begin their helpfull response with a "he's fucked" kind of look on their faces. A 45 min ride took nearly 3 hours. The second blowout was no where near a repair shop so I just left the bike where it was, ... read more

I've spoken to 4 people about Vietnam, 2 said its been the best holidaying of all time and 2 think its the shithole of the world......so was fairly keen to get there and decide for myself. I like it. But its fecken sweaty man. I think if my mate Kieran was here (who I've travelled with a fair bit, and enjoys the odd power sweat) I'd have to carry him around in a bucket. Decided to leave Hong Kong one hungover morning.....was not really much else to do there after a couple of days. Had nothing booked so thought I try and "wing it man". Turned out pretty good. Got to the train station half hour before a train back to Guangzhou on the mainland left (its about a 2 hour journey), which got me there ... read more

Howdy. When you see a "Made in China" label it usually refers to Guangzhou.....this place is the manufacturers mecca, and a 3 week trade fair was in full swing while I was there. So most of the people I met were there on business......still good laugh though beering it up with a Colombian, Mexican and a Frenchy. Really not much to see there so might only throw a few pictures in this entry for the sake of it. Apart from the city itself, there isn't much to look at in Hong Kong either, so only stayed there a couple of nights. Can be hard at times to tell if its night or day on some streets around Wan Chai. Took the Peak Train up into the heavens for a spectacular view of the place......smog wasn't too ... read more

Wuhan it is then. As mentioned in the last entry, I met up with a few uni students on the train from Xi'an that wanted to show me around the city. Spent a bit of time around their university, then off to the Yellow Crane Tower which is probably this city's claim to fame, then onto a boat across the Yangzi. This city is huge.....had never heard of it before but turns out its bigger than Sydney. It used to be 3 different cities separated by a couple of rivers (Yangzi & Han) but has exploded into one big-un. Had a great time with the new mates & the Yellow Crane Tower is defo worth a look. Not much else happening here though to keep me around more than a couple of days. Booked myself on ... read more

Afternoon all, Thought I'd start with a quick "camera" update. Number 3 still performing solidly, though Numbnuts here managed to clear the memory card, deleting every photo......nice one Shano. Having said that, I'm trying to get a few photos from a mate I was travelling with through Datong (hanging temple, cave carvings) and Pingyao (a village where time stopped 150 years ago) so all may not be lost. So, lets skip those places for the time being and move onto Xi'an. The only reason people really come to Xi'an is to see the Terracotta Soldiers that are about 30km's out of town (2hours in peak hour....nuts). Pretty bloody spectacular is the best way to describe them....and I should know, I went around the place twice thanks to my photo deleting shenanigans. Its a bit of a ... read more

China....made it, this is what I've been waiting for Haven't really got much time to write much, there's a line up of people wanting to get on this puter. Mongolia to China train was well boring, nothing really except dust. But Beijing is a great place. Been here a week but heading out tonight. Next stop Datong. Enjoy the pics. Righto, jumped on the fairly packed train in Irkutsk at 21:50 Wednesday night, but by the time I woke the next morning there was me and only 2 others on the entire wagon. All the Russians jumped off at Ulan Ude which I think is the last main stop before you hit Mongolia. Thursday will not go down in the books as a day to remember.....5 hours at the Russian border control, 1 hour crossing the actual border then 2 hours at the Mongolian border control......Travelled about 1 mile in 8 hours, which is now included in the "Shane's book o' stuff" as the new definition of boredom. Rolled into the capital of Mongolia (Ulaan Baatar) at 6:10 the next morning. Think I may have made a bit of a mistake in that I'm only staying ... read more

After a lazy 50 hours on the Trans-Siberian I made it to Irkutsk. Room mates on the train this time were a little more interesting. 2 girls just went to get their visas for the UK, they're going to Oxford next year. The other guy had just driven across Russia to get a few extra Rubles by selling his car in Moscow. One of the girls sopoke fairly decent English......a lot like mine on a morning after. Had one night in Irkutsk, then went to Lake Baikal. Its a massive lake....holds about 20% of the world fresh water reserves. Completely frozen over to about 4 meters for 4 months a year. Looked pretty spectacular. I have put commentary with quite a few photos in this blog entry so I'm not going to write much here.......other than ... read more

So......I left Moscow on March 30th headed for Yeketerinburg. Back on the trans-siberian train, this one number 26. Wasn't going to be as plush as the last (number 1)....they get worse the higher the number. Another overnighter, got on at 16:20 and arrived next day 18:58 Moscow time (20:58 local). The roomies this time weren't as cheery as the drunken army fellas from the last train. They were a 70 year old couple with 3 and a half tonne of luggage. Sweet couple, I only had to scream "SHUT THE FCUP I'M TRYING TO SLEEP" once.......what is it with oldies and 5am starts. Maybe me dad can answer that.......dad? Anyhoo, back to Yeketeringburg (or ekaterinburg.....depending which sign you're looking at). This place got its name because of one of the the "greats"....Peter the Great got St ... read more
