Said farewell to beautiful Yangshuo, and all the western food that it holds.. and headed by bus to Longsheng to check out the rice terraces. We were under the impression that our hostel was in DaZhai, where the terrraces we wanted to visit was. As we hopped on a minibus from Longsheng to DaZhai, the hostel owner popped up at our bus window and said "Hello, are you Andrew Sharp?". Turns out the hostel is in Longsheng and she had found us! Riverside Hotel was fabulous, basic accomodation but the lady who owns it was like our own tourguide. "This afternoon you visit the waterfall, then in the morning i will tell you how to get to the DaZhai terraces." That day was pretty uneventful apart from the giant spider at the waterfall, which i am ... read more

Guilin is a small city of about 670,000 people and pretty much seems to be shrouded in a constant gray fog/cloud which makes it very humid. Walking around, everything is wet, even when it hasn't been raining, and I don't just mean outside. As we were looking at hotels to find a place to stay, we slipped and slid around the lobbies and hallways. We found a place to stay that was reasonable, despite the persistent dampness of everything. We planned to stay here a couple nights and use it as a staging ground for visting the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces which are about an hour and a half away. Our first day here we scoped out the towns shopping and eating options, and ended up finding a cheaper, nicer place to stay for our second ... read more

August 25, 2007 - August 26, 2007 We were ready and waiting for our bus to Longsheng at 7:20 am and luckily we were there on time (Michelle is a very punctual person, Andy and I are not) as the bus only stopped for a minute. We spent about 30 minutes stopping at various places around town to pick up more passengers. We pulled off to the side of the road and the bus driver mumbled something in Chinese and then got off the bus. I looked at Andy and Michelle with a puzzled face and everyone immediately jumped up and bee lined it for the door. I was polite and let people get off in front of me. Little did I know, we were switching buses. By the time the three of us made it ... read more

A loud city clock chimed early in the Longsheng air, awaking me fifteen minutes before my scheduled 7 am alarm. A quick look around happily revealed nothing much had changed during the night. Yes, still in an exceedingly basic hotel room, devoid of any sense of homeliness. And yes, the city outside still looks gray and as plain as this room. But who cares, I wasn't here for the thrilling cityscape. Nope, I came to Longsheng with one purpose - to see the famous Dragon's Backbone terraced rice fields. What I found quite surprisingly, was a colorful pair of eating utensils. With sunlight still waiting to fill the streets with life, I decided to make my way from the Longsheng Big Hotel to really nowhere in particular. I needed to get to the bus station, but ... read more

Hi All! I've been here at Longji Terrace for a couple days, walking around in the terraced rice fields, staying in a wooden building, built post and beam... Uh oh, my massage appointment is here... gotta go... AAAAHHHHH... That was very nice, now it is hard to be online and not sleeping , so this will be brief. Made my way around yesterday and today in thesee fields and villages, and will head out tomorrow to Guilin, then Nanning the following day to check out the sugar cane pulp product factory near there. The stay here has been fun... good food, nice people, though a bit aggressive on the selling of their stuff. Great weather, too. A few clouds today, but nice and warm. The place I'm staying, run by a woman named Among, is very ... read more

We bussed from Yangshuo back to Guilin, Guilin to Longsheng, and up a long rode to the Yao minority village of Dazhai. We stayed in a wooden hotel that night, freezing our butts off in the 30 degree cold, but it was all worth it to wake up at sunrise the next morning and hike the 4 hours to Ping'An over steeply terraced rice fields. I could not believe the sights and had to ask myself how I was so lucky to be there! It was beautiful. We were followed by a few Yao women making their daily commute to the city, dressed in traditional clothes with their long hair wrapped up, selling everything from hand embroidered cloth to a glimpse of their hair (only 5 yuan!). Well, they didn't want to pay to see my ... read more

Wednesday 6th September 2006 Today we visited the Longji rice terraces, also called the Dragon Backbone Terraces. The journey on a very mini minibus took around 4 hours. The worst toilet observation happened at the toilet stop on the way. Luckily I’d (Sam) limited my liquid intake and didn’t really need to go, but was going to go ‘just in case’, however the toilets were in the pig trough, communal, no doors, just line up and squat style, which I had been warned existed but was yet to see. They are angled so that all waste runs away! Suffice to say I didn’t use them. On a more pleasant note, approach to the terraces and the terraces themselves were as amazing as we’d hoped. We had a guide, which is essential in this part of Longji, ... read more
