25 April 2013 Longshen I am lying in bed listening to frogs chirping and thinking about the stir fried frog on the dinner menu his evening. Frogs must love this place. Those that don't get eaten anyway. The rice terraces outside our window tonight are truly spectacular. Yes, it is the wrong time of year to see them as they are not sprinkled with snow, or lush and green, or golden ripe, or flooded in water in preparation for planting; but the muddy, misty, 500 year old stepped landscape is just awesome anyway! The summer rains have begun, the clouds drift in and out touching the ground and leaving everything sparkling in their dewy swirls. Streams trickle and tinkle down rocky cracks and soft focussed bamboo sways in the chilly wind. It is a scene from ... read more

Note: please creep the pictures to know what im talking about. So its been about a week since our vacation ended and I am just now getting over my laziness to write another post…so here it goes. For those who don’t know, we got a seven day vacation last week because of the National Holiday in China. The Peoples Republic of China was founded on October 1, 1949 and to recognize that the entire country gets the week off. Its real similar to our July 4th. The fact that I wasn’t Chinese and couldn’t show my patriotism didn’t really bother me, a 7 day vacation is a 7 day vacation. As usual, I was traveling with the other five dudes who came to China with me (Aaron, Nick, Mark, Tim, and Sean). The bell for my ... read more

That night we took a late night flight to Guilin after eating a group dinner. The hotel in Guilin was very nice, the nicest and most expensive hotel we would stay in the whole trip according to Zoey. The next morning we got up and had a couple hours to walk around Guilin. I met a man on the street that is a calligraphy professor at Guilin University. He offered to bring us to try some of his sister’s tea at her new tea shop. The tea was made from the cinnamon trees in Guilin, Guilin in Chinese means cinnamon forest. The tea was amazing, but it was a little spendy for me so I didn’t buy any. Mack however, bought some and seemed pretty excited about it. He also showed us some of his calligraphy ... read more

From a touristic MUST SEE STOP that I made in Yangshuo, I headed up north to see the famous Longji rice terraces. To avoid time killing with transfers I took a direct "onedaytrip" from Yangshuo ...just one way. So by noon I was already feasting on sticky rice, steamed in bamboo stems. What a taste! Soon (by the evening, when I of course went for another one) I learned that it's essential that the bamboo is fresh, from a clean areas like all around up here and that the dish must still be served hot (wasn't really the case with the evening dish). Anyhow...it's the gentlest taste a rice can have and hope to have another opportunity to have it some day soon! After carrying my backpack totally to the top of the village, where the ... read more

Longsheng, the city from north of Guilin, famous by rice terrace, that was the missing place where I wanted to go in 2007, but we hadn't time, now we are back to complete our wish, also our promise to our Guilin's friend, Fiona, she is a tourist guide there, we met in 2007 when we went to the Guilin, she was our guide, and then we become good friends. This time we stayed in village, in the middle of the rice terrace, no car and no noise at night, just the bug's songs and the sky full of stars, a wonderful morning view of rice terrace. Talking about rice terrace, there is a great agriculture engineering, a irrigation system made by bamboos and woods, distributing the water source from the top to the hole terrace, simple ... read more

Guilin noodles for breakfast was good. Tastier than the noodles in Yangshou (3.5RMB). After trying in vain I managed to get rid of my fake 50RMB to the bus station for the ticket to Longsheng rice fields (back to where it came from). Juan Juan taught me to check that the notes made a sound when you flapped it and if you weren’t sure it was ok to ask for change in 10 and 20RMB notes as they usually weren’t fakes. There are seldom places I can imagine living. Longseng is definitely one of them (also in Dali and the Yubeng village in China). It took 2 buses, 4 hours and 25RMB later to get to the village Baimai where we were staying. It was defiantly worth it. The guest house let me do my washing ... read more
