Because of the many questions I've been asked about lactose and my dependance on the stuff, I have decided to devote a blog to Milk. As I write this, I got a packet of milk leaning against the window behind the computer. So yes, there is milk in China, and yes people drink it. Although this milk is different than the kind back home, it satisfies my cravings. If you were reading closely you noticed I said “a packet of milk.” That’s right. Not a carton, not a jug, not a gallon; but a packet. When they first showed me the packet, I thought it was powdered milk. But, when they handed it to me, I noticed it was heavy and contoured to my hand, like liquid. I knew then and there that, besides the ... read more

MOGGABOGGADOGGA Her kjem eit nytt innlegg fraa den reisande. Oh. What to write about? ... read more

hey everybody! it has been a few days since i last updated. sorry about that. here now it is tuesday afternoon and i just got back from a rousing (sp?) game of ping pong with my host sister. we have this gym thing downstairs in my apartment building with pool tables, ping pong tables, a pool, and a non functioning bar slash coffee shop. you have to pay $2 to use the tables, which is ridiculous since i worked long and hard to buy this apartment, but it is good fun nonetheless. i guess i should start where i left off. Saturday the 4th (my real mom's birthday), i went to the hong qiao market for my first real bargaining trip this time in china. i hated seeing so many foreigners because it reminded me that ... read more

I woke up at 6 this morning to meet with Jill to take the subway to an American pub in Beijing. The ‘purpose’ of this visit at an ungodly hour was to watch the SuperBowl. I still don’t know what teams played, and was very disappointed that there were no commercials. I went to spend time with people and time with people was indeed spent. After walking through the cold to get on the subway Jill and I joined more people to spend more time on the subway followed by a cold bus ride and an even colder walk. After asking several perturbed pedestrians where to find the ‘Goose and Duck pub by the East Gate’ we called to discover that it was by the West Gate. More cold toes ensued. Entering the quiet looking, somewhat ... read more

Hello Everyone, It's time for another episode of....."what's that food?" To be fair, I have actually not really had anything particularly shocking. The food has been great, and save for a couple of chopstick nugget episodes (repeated again tonight), nothing particularly weird has been forced upon my plate. That being said, last night I SAW weird things. Does that count? Well, whether or not it does or not, I of course snapped pictures for the world to see...so for our purposes I guess it does count. So let's take a look: Yesterday I spent the day with an American teacher who has been teaching English at the school at which I will be doing the same. A native of the Baltimore area, we met a friend of hers who, surprise surprise, has also been teaching English ... read more

A fantastic day. We travelled out from Beijing to see a section of the Great Wall at Mutianyu. This was a 2 hour drive but we had heard it was better to go a little further afield and see a section not too popular with the tour buses. After so many grey or colourless skies here in China we were very happy to be greeted by sunshine and cobalt blue. I was in truth a little skeptical about how enjoyable a wall can be, even a great one. We chose the easy route and went up in a cable car, a sticker on the window proclaiming that our little cab had also taken 'William Clinton' up during his visit in 1998. The wall stretches across this mountainous land like a giant slumbering dragon, its backbone undulating ... read more

I think I got lucky with the family situation…I have heard stories from the other exchange students of crazy mothers and psycho fathers. I, on the other hand, could not be happier with the family I was chosen to live with. I had already met my younger brother, Hans, in America during his four month stay. He is my height, but not as large. He is younger than me, but more mature and responsible. From looking at the father, I understand where Han’s goofiness comes from. He is so easy going and laughs at almost everything. Hans, Baba (daddy) and I played Risk together one day and Baba loved every minute of it, even when he was losing horribly. He works at the Electronic Store at the bottom of our apartment. Hans told me that ... read more

There is definitely no lack of fun for an American boy in Beijing. I haven’t had a dull moment since the plane. Whether downtown, outside Beijing, or even at home there is always something to do. Everything is different; so, everything is interesting. It takes about 40 minutes to get downtown from where I live (I live on the 3rd ring road around the center). I, still holding the hand of my host brother, go to the train station down the street. Hop on an inbound train and ride it two stops to the end of the line. Here, I’ll transfer onto the blue loop line and ride it a couple stops. There are hundreds if not thousands of bus routes in Beijing, and, because I can’t read place names yet, I’m not going to ... read more
