School. The name it self often makes you tired and queasy looking for excuse not to go. I, on the other hand, could not wait to get into the school routine. It would allow me to begin working out again, see my friends every day, and have something to do for the day. It turned out to be more than I could handle for the first couple days. So, where to begin? I suppose at the beginning of the school day. Every week day my father wakes me up at 5:45 or 6 AM so I can roll out of bed, put on my uniform, eat a quick breakfast of rice and some sort of meat. I will walk down to the bike while it is still dark. Fumble around for the key to unlock ... read more

"He who has not climbed the Great wall is not a true man" - Mao Zedong Couldn't agree with you more old boy. Everywhere you go here in Beijing people try to sell you a package tour,"Transportation and lunch included" type deal to see the Great Wall. So my boy Ryan and I said to hell with that and decided to Do It Ourselves. Woke up at 7am. Caught the underground to the bus station. Some guy there tried to sell us a tour, we told him where to go. Lucked out and jumped on some taxi thing that was just leaving. Ended up being a bit of a nightmare with them packing in 28 people into 19 seats. (Just like home on the N2) These two guys got into a fight, the one guy ended ... read more

Since this class is about industry and spring break is coming up, I thought this would be fun. If anyone happens to go to a place where you can only purchase things through bargaining, then this blog is going to useful. I recall the time I was in China which was in 2001. Prices of everything was significantly low compared to the prices that we pay here in America, it makes me wonder after all the import/export taxes that we pay here along with government sales taxes, how much are stores really profiting from us? Meanwhile if they purchased many products from China at really low prices, they could profit by over 100%. I'm trying to remember my bargaining skills since I was last there in 2001...... OK so we arrived in Beijing at around 7am a a few days ago. It was snowing. Pretty cool especially seeing as though it was the first time Ryan had seen snow falling. Jumped on a bus then an underground train. Walked about a km in the cold and eventually found the hostel. Far east Youth Hostel. Ahh, so nice. Went exploring. Walked to Tiannemen Sq and on the way continually tired to get into govt. buildings. The Chinese guards were not too impressed but Ryan and I had some good laughs. Got to the square, amazing. Huge. They pack over a million people in here sometimes. If you stand in the middle you are at the Memorial to the Fallen Hero's. Looking straight ahead you see the Forbidden Palace, to your left the Paliament (Great ... read more

School I’ve been at school for three weeks now. I get up at six to be at school by seven. I’m one of the lucky ones though, my host father drives my host sister and I to school each morning. Everyone else in my group has to get up even earlier and ride their bicycles. School starts at 7:20am. For the first ten minuets something mellow happens, I don’t really understand what it is and it is different everyday. Sometimes the students take a test for a class they miss that day. After that short bit of time we head outside for morning exercises. Now when they say morning ‘exercises’ don’t be fooled. We’re not out there doing pushups, crunches, or running laps. We’re marching. Well, not only marching, but the whole affair is defiantly militaristic. ... read more

Kinesere lurer utenlandske folk. Huge time. I dag feks. Her om dagen, feks. Jeg kjoepte et minnebrikkekort til 600 RMB. 1 gigabyte. Tenkte det var litt dyrt, men. Det fikk gaa. I ettermiddag og kveld, shoppet jeg med Roy. Min indonesiske venn. Han snakker kinesisk, og ... read more

Joda, saa neida. Jeg skrev faktisk et langt innlegg. Og brukte 45 minutter paa det. Men akkurat. Oj. Trond Viggo Torgersen poppet innom huet mitt. Well, we are now official Aliens of Beijing having received our 'Aliens Residence Permit' and 'Aliens Employment Permit' from the Chinese Government a few days ago. Yep, they really make you feel welcome and loved here, labelling you as Aliens. Its been just over 2 weeks, and we can confidently say that we think we really are going to like it here in Beijing. It's full of all the comforts you'd expect in a western country, except that things are one fifth of the price. Despite the language barrier, its actually not too difficult getting around - thanks to the aid of our trusty lonely planet phrase book. Through a combination of gesturing wildly, pronouncing Chinese phrases with an Australian accent and just looking plain sad and helpless, we've managed to get over most language hurdles. ... read more
