Actually, any place in China is "China time" since there is only one time zone throughout the whole country. So I slept until 9:00 this morning. We had noodles in the room and decided to go out to the park just in front of our hotel so Ruth could do a little sketching. img style="float:right; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3085/97/200/DSC_5257.jpg" border="0" alt=""The weather was a perfect 60 degrees and a light breeze consoled the weeping willows. The children and parents were out strolling together. You'll see no guys in spandex zipping through on roller blades or bicycles, only slow walking adults and their children. Ever... read more

I slept about four hours. Light finally came at 6:00 a.m. and we got going. Our first stop was breakfast. Since the downstairs restaurant had a buffet, we thought we'd check it out. At the entrance we discovered they wanted 126 yuan! I'd already written my name on the receipt but when we calculated the cost in U.S., I started to tear it up. The lady got mad and said something under her breath (glad I don't understand Chinese) so we left. I think I may have given foreigners a ... read more

Eric dropped us off at the Atlanta airport and it was then we realized that we wouldn't be together for a month, the longest our family has ever been separated. It was kind of sad to say goodbye but he'll be busy with Conyers and his Hawaii/California trips while we are gone. img style="float:right; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3085/97/200/DSC_5161.jpg" border="0" alt=""We got to the gate, ate a Burger King breakfast sandwich. Peking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The JingShan school is more than just a high school. It includes an elementary school, a middle school and a high school. The kids are expected to attend this single walled off area for their entire 12 years of schooling. In a search for new experiences and ways out of a whole day in one classroom, Mrs. Fong has done us the great liberty (figuratively and otherwise) by giving us each a new and improved schedule. This schedule is broken up into blocks of the day (each are 40 minutes) and some of the blocks have the names of two people from the American group next to the name of an Elementary class. So, during these blocks, the two Americans listed on the schedule get to leave the high school class and travel across the ... read more

Again, I am still alive, and things are going well. I'm glad to report that my host family has gotten the internet back in our appartment, so these entries should become somewhat more regular again. It's been a busy few weeks, here. I guess it's easiest for me to work backwards, because I can barely remember when I last updated. Yesterday all the American girls were invited to the birthday party of Mrs. Fong's host sister, Bin Bin. Bin Bin is an unbelievably sweet girl who's in Senior 2 (Junior year) at Jing Shan. The party was really fun. We were picked up by van at Jing Shan School early in the morning, and the first thing we did was to go see the two most prestigious universities in Beijing: Peking University, and Tsing Hua (sp?) ... read more

The Great Wall started to be constructed in 220 BC and was built over successive dynasties. The purpose was protection against the nomadic tribes from the north, like the Mongolians. Attempted attacks were anounced but the smoke from the many tower the wall has. The Great Wall is said to snakes like a gragon at the neck of the gragon is Beijing. Badaling section of the GW is closest to Bejing, but we went to a section of the Great Wall at Mutianyu, which is less crowded with tourists and 2 hours from Beijing. The drive there gave us the opportunity to get to know some of the 17 people sharing our mini bus. A young couple from New Zealand who just spent 2 years teaching English in Japan, a guy from Pakistan working on developing ... read more

HOSPITAL I couldn't resist visiting a hospital just a block away from my hotel. It was a beautiful old building and on Sunday, at 8 in the morning, I wandered in. To my surprise, it was very spacious and clean. There was a directory on the wall, and in English I could read endocrinology. I started stopping everyone who walked by, and finally an young nurse spoke a little bit of English. Soon, I was at the 3rd floor, where she left me. Now the trouble began: how to explain what I was doing there? The nurses did not understand me, and I kept repeating "doctor". Eventually an young doctor appeared and after I convinced him (it took about 10-15 minutes) that I was just a curious turist, interested in health care and diabetes, he was ... read more

McDonald's, Starbucks, and KFC are everywhere, and packed with Chinese. It's hard to understand while they are willing to pay a lot (compared to Chinese food) to eat our greasy unhealthy food, while their cuisine offers an enormous variety of fresh food. We must confess, however, that we did go into a McDonald's, just to check it out. The menu included the usual hamburger and fries, but also had a chinese soup, "taro" (like yucca) or pineapple pies, and fried chicken leg. No, we did not try any of these items, but we had to order the soft serve vanilla ice cream dipped in dark chocolate. It was delicious and it cost only 47 cents!!! We really liked the "hot pot", where we cooked our own food on boiling water at the table. We managed the ... read more

April 3, 2006 - Beijing This will be my last entry in the blog. Our trip has come to an abrupt end. Just as we were getting ready to leave Seoul for Beijing we got word that my father was dying - and we needed to decide what to do/when to leave back to the US. Once in Beijing we got help from our hotel, The Radisson SAS managed to get us tickets back to Denver for Monday the 3rd (I sit writing this on the plane to San Francisco). So we had 36 hours to “do” Beijing. What does one do with only 36 hours? It was 2:30pm in the afternoon. We hopped in a cab and went to the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City is forbidden after 4:30 so by the time we got ... read more
