The bus system is the most terrifying system I have ever seen. I think Hans mentioned over 1000 bus routes in the city. When I first saw a bus map on the side of a terminal station, I thought it was a picture of a circuit board: thin lines of blue and red etching their way around the “map” in 90 degree turns. There were no streets on this map…it would have been to busy to read. Also, with all the routes, there must be hundreds of bus stops scattered throughout the city; you can’t walk 200 feet down a major street without passing a few bus stops. Due to the complexity, it is difficult for me to figure out which bus I want. At every bus stop there is a sign three feet wide ... read more

Hello everyone! I hope you enjoyed our two part series that just concluded. Today's entry will be a tad on the shorter side. Well, we knew the day would come eventually. I had to say goodbye to the tiny, pink girl's bike that I have been using for the past few weeks. Today the Jingshan school gave us all new bikes. Gone are the days of me feeling silly while pedaling the streets of the capital on grandma's clunker. Now, I am the proud caretaker of a slightly larger, silver, but still girl's bike. Hey...it's an improvement. After all, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. I am told usually they give us bikes that barely work...but this year they bought new ones for us. So today we had to go into school to pass ... read more

I morgen skal jeg bare si A. A. Aaaa. Aaa. A! Kanskje jeg kan anbefale denne bokstaven like mye. Will test it out tomorrow. Saa. Ferje til Korea i morgen. I gaar moette jeg mine svenske og irske, amerikasnke og skotska frender paa John Bull bar. Et godt triks aa dra dit paa torsdager. ... read more

NOTE: THIS IS THE SECOND IN A SERIES OF 2 ENTRIES, PLEASE READ THE LAST ENTRY FIRST TO CATCH UP! Hello out there! (Entry 2 of 2) When we last left our hero, I had started to take China by storm. I've taken an agent, and.....okay....sorry I got carried away there. Today's journal will focus on the remainder of the Xian trip, including the Terra Cotta Warriors, and an amazing bike trip. But first....today in Beijing. The weather in Beijing today's was glorious! A stark contrast the arctic temperatures of a fortnight ago, today was 54 degress in the capital of the Middle Kingdom. I took my pink girls bike, and headed out for an adventure. But where to was the question? I had many places I wanted to go...however I decided on an unusual choice....Scholtsky's ... read more

so since i told you guys that i would keep you updated on my family drama, i have to post a short blog today. the day that i posted my last blog, talking about my frustration with my family not speaking chinese, i decided to talk to my host sister the entire day in chinese, even if she answered back in english. she did answer back in english but at least i got to practice speaking. that night, at about 1030, i was watching tv when my host mom tells host sister to go take a shower. then, host mom goes over and abruptly turns off the television, telling me she has to talk to me. so, im like ok, whats going on? so she starts at me in fast, angry chinese about how i should ... read more

ENTRY 1 (of 2) Hello everyone, especially to those blizzard covered East Coasters! It's been way to long since I've come at you with an blog entry. Why? so i survived in beijing without my groupmates for 4 days. it was at times boring and at times difficult, but i stuck it out. i dont remember where i left off in my last blog, but i think hearing about every little thing i do is probably getting kid of boring for you guys, so im just going to touch on some major things. i went to the xi dan bookstore by myself in hopes of getting my hands on a map of the beijing bus system. i couldnt find one, which was really disappointing because i think once i master the bus system i will be able to go anywhere that i want in beijing. because i couldnt find my map, i decided to look around the xi dan mall. it was much like ... read more

I was planning on writing my next entry about my amazing trip to Xi An, but I just had a ‘OMFG Communism’ moment that I would like to share. Today my host family told me that we were going to a dinner theater about the Cultural Revolution. I said that I would like to go, because it sounded very interesting, but I was hoping they wouldn’t ask me too many questions about what I thought about it. In the car ride there the dreaded question came from my host cousin who is 21: “So, what do you think about the Cultural Revolution”. I was so afraid that I would say something offensive that I had to rely on ‘Our teachers told us we’re not supposed to talk about politics’ which sounded rather lame and awkward. Surprisingly ... read more

Lindis Solvang, Beijing.... read more
