Day 14. Sihanoukville. Rest day. Good breakfast with eastern and western choices before sauntering down the beach paddling in the sea. Walking on the waterbreak was good apart from the plastic and other rubbish dumped above the waterline and the sewage being drained into the sea making it unsuitable for swimming, although Alison did a quick splash. A drink part way back up the beach was followed by lunch at the Vegan cafe. I had bacon, egg and chips, swallowed down with a glass of beer. Sihanoukville is staffed by youths of all nationalities, Ukraine, French and Turks etc. The next job was to open my bike box and squeeze a few items into the tiny gaps to reduce my hand luggage weight and size. Our plans again frustrated by the weather we planned a beach day in Kep for Tuesday and decided a leisurely Tuk Tuk the best means. This form of transport works well, not nearly as close and personal as walking but slow-ish and fairly relaxing and you get to experience the sights and smells of rural Cambodia and we have to say, compared with Vietnam or even Thailand, lovely as the people are, their lack of Civic pride would put the Cypriots in the Green Party. Every village or small holding simply dump their rubbish in the nearest stream or roadside! A bit sad really. Anyway, we arrive in Kep and stroll the roughly 6kms to the ferry terminal and apart from some fantastic but derelict French Colonial homes there is little to see. We turn around ... read more

Day 13. Sihanoukville. Tuesday 23 Jan The best sleep this week and a good breakfast before wee set off for Sihanoukville by the main road. The road got busier the further north we got. Good lunch if noodles and veg for $2.50 after which the road got even busier with heavy lorries. Mostly 10 wheel rigid tippers and 5 axle artics. Lots of makes such as Hino, Hyundai, Volvo, Mitsubishi and American Sterling with long noses. We have never seen as many HGV,s as this all week and think that there was a quarry nearby since there were a couple of weigh bridges on the roadside. This made it quite unsafe for cycling since they were going quite fast with little room to pass, especially when we came to the narrow bridges. Chris actually fell off into ... read more

No way were we going very far today after yesterday’s minibus marathon. We checked 4 weather forecasts, no 2 agreeing except that wall to wall sunshine was not on the cards but rain was, at some point. We were kept awake by some idiots sitting outside their room talking, not loudly but we could still hear. We woke up and heard them at 4.30 am and were still going strong at 7. Grief! Otherwise sleeping scrunched up at the end of the wet bed worked OK, and the air con dried it out by the morning. As we like it here a lot, we decided to try to extend our stay. The staff, both western and local, are just great. Nothing is too much trouble, so friendly. We looked on booking.com and there was no problem ... read more

Overnight we had torrential tropical rain and the roof of our converted barn/hotel being corregated steel, resounded to the impact all through the night. This put paid to our plans for a Boker National Park trek, revised plan originally was then to hire bicycles and cycle locally, but a short walk to Fish Island across the Kampot River, convinced us that the roads and track were all but impassable to two wheeled transport and the dark skies threatened more rain to come. Plan C, quick trip back to the hotel for more money and catch a bus to Kep. The bus was due to leave at 10am, we loaded onboard with a host of backpackers, who were mostly en route to Ho Chi Minh City (12 hour trip minimum). The bus was crowded and very hot. ... read more

Yesterday we went to the beach. That was all! Today our pick up was supposed to be at 8.20am. We scraped together enough currency between us to pay in dong. Sam was rather over-extended so needed to get rid of it before we left. To our huge surprise our pickup actually came at 8.20 and caught us on the hop a bit. The minibus was packed, which set the tone for the rest of them, all 4 others! There was a group of 6 French people, retired, absolutely charming and helpful, to us at least. They asked where were from and we got ros beef/Brexit. Whatever! For some reason, they decided to sing the French national anthem as we were driving along. This went down swimmingly and everyone clapped at the end, including the tour guide ... read more

Day 11 Kep We encountered some wet roads this afternoon and even a few spots on our heads as we rode into Kep, the first on this trip. It had rained overnight which made the atmosphere a bit humid and although it ONLY got up to 32 degrees, it felt more draining and I felt sluggish all day. The most part of the 102 km was on busy roads with trucks and coaches etc. which is not the most pleasant of conditions for cycling. Again we have seen pure Health and Safety at work where about four men were digging up a big hole in the busy road surrounded by three cones and a motorbike remorqu. As we approached Kep and the coast we took a dirt road which went to the coast by a large ... read more

Day 10. Takeo. Saturday 20 January. 77km Away at 8am. In at 3pm. The ride out of Phnom Penh took us past a roundabout monument commemorating Cambodian Independence. Not quite as hairy as the ride in and out into the countryside close to the Killing Fields of yesterday. I think that every day our Guide Channi has taken us along a different route to the one used in 2015 and supplied to all riders. Today was the same and we are glad of it because it is off the main roads and very enjoyable despite being on dirt roads. The guides have said they like our group because we will go anywhere and do not whinge. We get the same comments in Japan because all CTC are competent riders who enjoy the riding. Day 8 Phnom Penh Not the best hotel I have ever been in but we must acknowledge that we are in Cambodia and off the tourist track. The room Roger and I were given was on the front and extremely noisy with traffic, smelt of bad fish, loose wires everywhere and filthy with grit on the floor under the windows. There was also a void going down to ground floor level behind the wardrobe echoing noises from below. The windows were also absolutely filthy And I had to fix the toilet seat to stop it floating around. Dire. We asked to move and got a family room with two large double beds after much hard bargaining. The beds were very comfortable and slept well despite being woken at 2am with lorries passing by blowing their horns. ... read more

Day 10 Phnom Penh. Rest day. A lie in today, up at 6.45 and out exploring the massive central market with Roger, Joe, Anita, Darel and Margaret. The volume of goods is massive, many of which are the same but still a good range. The fish and meat stalls are something else with monsters from the deep. We got caught up in the T shirt area and were seduced by the girls selling stuff at rock bottom prices and enjoying the banter. T shirts were $2, polo shirts $5. There were some genuine Ray Bans at $15, which Roger was tempted to buy. At the roadside we had a light lunch of rice with a small portion of chicken noodles, but not chicken as we know it. I think they take off the portion of meat ... read more
