Before heading to Cambodia I didn’t really know a great deal about the history of the country and as we drove from the airport into the city of Phnom Penh it immediately reminded me of India with the dusty roads, market stalls and amount of traffic on the road. Very much in contrast to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore that we'd already visited in South East Asia. I’d heard of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge but it wasn't until we visited the Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide (S-21 Prison) and The Killing Fields in Phnom Penh that I gathered any real understanding of just how bad things were under him and how recently it all happened. As we were walking around The Killing Fields the statistic that stuck out most to me was when the narrator ... read more

We took a bus from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville, which took about 6 hours. We were quite lucky to find a bus as most of them were full: a lot of locals go to the beach to celebrate the new year! On our first night there, Shaun made the most of the $0,50 beers! Our hostel in Sihanoukville was quite expensive for what it was but we met nice people there. On the 31st, we took a Tuk-tuk to go to Otres beach, a beautiful beach 7 kilometers away from the centre of Sihanoukville. There were a lot of people there but it was rather litter free and the sea was so clear! We swam amongst the fish and relaxed for a while before heading back to the hostel. There was a barbecue organized by the ... read more

We departed Saigon early morning. Andy and Dev came down to say goodbye to us in the lobby. We said goodbye to 4 people in total – Andy and Dev, Mark and Matt. The rest if our group(me, Bill, my dad, Andrea, Celine, Tanya, Tina, Louise and Khakid) were continuing to Cambodia. We walked a short distance to get the express bus. As we were walking to the bus stop I thought there were 2 other random tourists following us but realised it was the missing Germans who are on this leg of the trip with us – mother and daughter France and Fabiana. The bus took us to the border and we filled out the visa forms on the bus. We went through the Vietnam immigration first, got stamped out, then got on the bus ... read more

Started the day riding from the hotel 30 kms to the Cambodian border. One of the prettiest rides to date with a levee road running along a canal with both side lined by humble stilt houses & alive with the every day activities of village life. The houses were ramshackle, made from anything available like rusty tin, plastic, canvas, tree branches but with an obvious pride, swept clean & decorated with colourful pot plants. Ironically many also had satellite dishes. The Border crossing was quite but still slow & bureaucratic, but not so for locals who seemed to be loaded up with produce or goods & continue straight past quarantine & immigration. Once through we picked up our new bikes & a new local crew for a short ride to lunch. After lunch we did another ... read more

Yesterday, being our last full day in Phnom Penh we visited the Royal Palace. Having driven past it many times we were keen to see what it was like. It’s a large complex with many different buildings including the Silver Pagoda which contains the Emerald Buddha. According to Wikipedia it is not certain what exactly it is made of. Someone even suggested Lalique. Suffice to say it is referred to as being made of Emerald - Crystal. It was beautifully translucent with the light coming through it and is similar to the one in Bangkok. Unfortunately people are not allowed to go in the main throne room which is huge. You can peek through the side doors and windows only. It looks quite magnificent but beady-eyed guards are watching very closely ready to pounce if anyone ... read more

Wo soll ich nur anfangen? Alles begann an meinem letzten Abend in Kampot.

We’re a bit waterlogged as we have spent so much time swimming, On our own and with Alexander, and will probably have another one before breakfast tomorrow before we leave for Phnom Penh. The water is as clear as crystal and tonight there there was the most glorious sunset. Sean had a bit of work to do this morning so we set off in a boat for an island, forgive me but I do not know its name. There are three that the local boats take people out to. We just went to the one that had the best beach. There we found Nak’s Shack cafe where the lady chopped a coconut especially for Alexander. He loves them. Ian’s beer just came in a can. When we arrived at about 10am we were the the only ... read more

Dreistigkeit siegt immer!

I’m glad Agata was driving and not me for the three hours it took us to drive down to the south coast. It is definitely not for the faint hearted. However on the last km, which was little more than a dirt track on either side of a shallow canal, we were rewarded with a magnificent display of lotus plants in flower. We have a beautiful riverfront room in Villa Verdici just on the outskirts of Kampot. You can swim in the fast flowing river but we opted for the pool which Alexander loved. So did we. I think the water temperature was the same as our pool at home but without the heating. Later in the afternoon a sand barge tried to anchor just off our place. The owner got very agitated, paddled out and ... read more
