It was now time to head back to the frenetic city of Phnom Penh. Once again, I arrived at that swelteringly hot bus station, but this time I had available funds and cash to burn. The tuk tuk whizzed through the city streets. Well actually, it mostly sat stalled in the midst of belching traffic. I realized that I was no longer in the peaceful side of Cambodia. I hoped my body and mind had recovered enough for what lay ahead. I was staying at the Vacation Boutique Hotel in downtown Phnom Penh. After stocking up at the local convince store for snacks and supplies I retired to my room to rest up for the night. At around 9pm I decided it was time to venture out into the awaiting darkness. The first bar I stopped ... read more

The small craft bounced across the waters of the Gulf of Thailand. I had boarded one of the many small boats heading to Koh Tonsay, or Rabbit Island, from the Kep pier this morning. On the ride over I spent my time alternatively watching the sun dance off the ocean ripples and talking to the attractive French girl opposite me. As the island came into view, I scanned its shoreline looking for secluded beaches that I could wander to later. I hadn’t made any previous bookings before arrival. I was told that locals would come up to you as you got off the boat with offers of places to stay. As soon as I hopped off the boat, I was approached by a Khmer man who said that he ran a group of bungalows and a ... read more

My stomach was in a weakened state this morning. So a simple breakfast it was: honey/lime crepes and dried bacon. Afterwards I said goodbye to Stacey, whose holiday was coming to an end. When Stacey’s car had pulled away, the cute Cambodian staff girl said it was no fair that Stacey had to leave and I got to stay. I puttered around Kampot for a couple hours and then it was time for me to depart as well. Before I left, I ordered one more luxuriant watermelon juice on the Rikitikitavi terrace. I gazed out over the sun dappled river and smiled. But as I did, I got the sense that this place was Stacey and I’s place. It was not for me alone. I got up and said my goodbyes to the awesome staff and ... read more

I was where I had always wanted be ever since back in 1998 as I was devouring Rough Guide’s First-Time Asia. Here I was up on a mystical mountain shrouded in mist. The only westerner in sight. Bells and chimes ringing all around me. It was a festival day and everyone was clamoring about in a festive mood and making offerings before altars. Where was I? I was on Bokor Mountain. What is crazy is this whole scene almost didn’t happen. That is because around 4am I was awoken by a powerful rumbling in my guts that shook my very foundations. I quickly was forced to make a mad dash to the toilet. Yessir, let the fun begin. Spicy fruit and yogurt salad the night before had definitely been an overconfident order. The whole episode lasted ... read more

The hostel staff tried to talk us out of it, saying the bus was much cheaper, but we wouldn’t hear any of it. We were going to hire a car. They said it might be difficult to arrange due to Chinese New Year, but after yesterday there was no way I was going to be stuck on a bus for a second straight day. Besides Stacey never minds a bit of luxury. So, a private car it was. A short time later a black car pulled up in front of the hostel. And out popped our driver sporting slicked back hair and wearing wrap around sunglasses and a “Thug Life” t-shirt. Stacey and I gamely piled into the backseat and we were on way to Kampot. There was a ton of holiday traffic, but I didn’t ... read more

I took one early morning last gasp at the Canadia Bank, but alas it was shut up and dark. Resigned and a little worse for the wear I piled myself into the Phnom Penh pound bus, mini-van more like. At the time I bought my ticket a couple of days before I was assigned seat #1D. Sounded pretty good to me. It turned out that 1D was actually the passenger seat next to the driver. Well, this was certainly informal. At least there was more leg room than in the seats behind me with all the other passengers. I would also be getting an unobstructed view of the road in front of me. I passed the time studying the driving techniques of the Cambodian highway. When the mini-van would approach a car it wanted to pass, ... read more

So I ran out of steam blogging in Phnom Penh, you may be relieved to note, mainly because we didn’t do much, didnt like it much (for the second time) and I didn’t feel too great for 24 hours of it. Sam was ok with the hostel, but for me I was at the edge of ok-ness. We will not be staying at the Lucky Gecko again. The room only had a window onto the corridor, this was a bit noisy but not too much of a problem, and there were no bedbugs as I thought there might be but the sheets were covered in stains. They had been washed but were still very off putting and the bathroom was horrible. The bath mat made your feel black when stepped on with wet feet, the grout ... read more

Well that was a bit of a day! We were very relieved to see that the tuktuk driver was outside ready for us at 6am and that he eventually managed to find the train station. We had offered 15$ as an incentive, over the odds, but we wanted him to be bothered to get out of bed. He seemed a bit lost at the final furlong, but we were actually right outside, it just didnt look like a train station. Inside was a girl with a table, writing out tickets, but when we showed her our internet one it was ok, we were a bit worried as the website we booked it on was Vietnamese. Just under £8 each. The station was very very basic but the train was there and we had to get into ... read more

After a lazy couple of days on the beach we were ready for some entertainment so as it was Saturday night we hopped into a tuktuk with Dan, one of our fellow residents, and paid 3$ to go to Otres Village. We hadn’t been there before but had driven past the road in. There are quite a lot of cafes and restaurants, look the same sort of standard as here, a bit rough and ready but busy with people, all ages. We turned off to the right down a dark track, apparently this was the right way but it looked unlikely. We were expecting a typical Asian street market, stalls of tat and food lining the street. Oh no, not this one! You go through an entrance off a really dark street, it’s signed Otres Market, ... read more
