Shapes that emerge from the childhood fantasies of the magical land, wild and beautiful, unlike anything I have ever seen before, but yet eerily familiar and personal as some ancient interpretation of a collective Rorschach test. Stolen notes from a psychiatric session that hasn’t happened yet. Pictorial code of answers to the Ultimate Question Of Life, the Universe and Everything, from our ancestors with a serious problem of interfering and converging dialectics of Hinduism, Buddhism and the reptilian race of Naga in prehistoric Kambuja. The original Elephant Man is my above-mentioned friend Ganesa (Ganesha), in the first picture. He has a beer belly, which Hindus claim to be a representation of fertility, but he also holds a box of candy in his right hand, so I would say that he is a regular bon vivant. One ... read more

We spent a few days in Siem Riep after the Temples as it was one of the nicer places we had been so far, just eating and drinking really before getting a bus back to Phnom Penh. This one seemed to take much longer, probably due to the Kung Fu movie they had on ridiculously loud! Arrived back in Pnomh Penh and noticed we stopped right where we wanted to be, quickly jumped off to grab our bags as the bus would have taken us a further 5 km or so away, think we succeeded in causing chaos as other travelers thought the journey had finished too and started clambering off, driver was going mad at us but managed to grab our bags and leg it to the lakeside resort again as he rounded everyone back ... read more

So here we are in Phnom Penh - the bustling, busy capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia. We have another half an hr to spare before we head to the airport to catch our flight to Bangkok (and our left luggage not to mention! :) ) We arrived here at 7 yesterday as mentioned earlier. What we failed to add was how we got here - we sat on the plane with one humongous backpack of which even 50% wouldn't fit in the overhead compartment, and luckily was squished under two seats. We therefore had no space to squeeze our second backpack (much smaller, but which also wouldn't fit in the overhead compartment) underneath, so held it in our laps the entire way. In between us, we squished our bigger Siem Reap purchases including a framed ... read more

Najin guest house plava na jezercku, ... read more

Wednesday When I woke up this morning, I heard a disturbing sound. I said, when I woke up this morning, I heard a disturbing sound! The sound turned out to be Jeff, "Time to get up Matty, it's a quarter to six". Clearly, I went back to sleep rather prompty. On his second attempt Jeff did manage to stir me and against all better judgement I rose to face the day. The reason for this unforgivable wake up call was that Jeff had a bus to catch at six and I wanted to see him off. His return to Australia was going to be a sudden wake-up call for me as it signalled the start of my solo journey. Well actually, Alex will be with me for a few more days but he doesn't count as ... read more

We are back in Phnom Penh again this time on our way to Kampot in the south. While preparing for this trip it was apparent there was a great need here. Cambodia is a country only just beginning to emerge from the ravages of war. American bombing in the 60s, civil war, genocide, and more civil war pretty well sums up the previous 40 years. We have been witness to a building boom here, much of it being generated for and from the tourism industry. However once the hotels are built then what? Not everyone can drive tuktuk or clean hotel rooms. As usual in the third world a select few seem to benefit. In today’s paper the garment industry just announced a minimum wage increase from $40 to $45 per month and they are the ... read more

So having arrived in Phnom Penh the capital of Cambodia we set about exploring what the city had to offer. The attrocities of the Khmer Rouge were not immediately apparent with all of the tourists in the street cafes and hawkers selling their wares (dodgy copies of the Lonely Planet). We took a Tuk-Tuk out to the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek and there in this very serene place, next to the water and the children playing outside of the security fence, it was hard to believe that that 20,000 people had been killed and buried in the mass graves which were right in front of us, which still revealed shards of clothing buried within the dirt. The remains of the exhumed skulls at Choeung EK are housed in the earie shrine within the grounds. An ... read more

We got the little man who works at our hotel, apparently called Jake, but we didn’t really believe that as most are called Yueng or Chao and other exotic names to give us a ride in his tuc tuc to the killing fields and the S21 prison. This is where I mentioned in a previous entry that you will probably need to know a bit of Cambodian history to properly understand it all, although I think the pics say a lot! But just to be boring ill give you a little overview. In 1975 the government was overthrown by a party/army called the Khmer Rouge, headed up by a guy called Pol Pot. To say he was sick would be being nice to him, the man wanted to rid the country of any Western influence and ... read more

Afternoon folks, Only a quick blog as we didn't hang around Phnom Penh too long. After we had done our trip round the Mekong and had a few drinks in the evening we were up nice and early, again. Went for a two hour trip in a rowing boat round a huge floating village place. We didn't get to row ourselves, as we had a grumpy looking Vietnamese woman rowing for us. She was probably upset at having to row two Brits around at half seven in the morning. We got taken to another little village where we had a swarm of kids trying to sell us stuff. Mrs Deane keeps giving in as she thinks all the kids look really cute. After this it was a 2 hour boat trip up the river to the ... read more
