The airport in Phnom Penh reminded me of one of those small tropical landing strips they call an airport in developing Caribbean nations. We descended the wheeled staircase to the tarmac and were engulfed in the morning heat. We followed the rush of other travelers inside the small airport and headed toward immigration, conveniently located just inside. A line had started to form, but in true Asian fashion, didn’t last long. It quickly became a tiny mob scene with people pushing and shoving their way up to the counter. Luckily, we were near the front so we handed over our passports and $20 US for the visa and were told to wait. We stood near the front of the crowd of tourists, rather impatiently, waiting for their visas. There was no rhyme or reason to who’s ... read more

In the end, we decided to skip Sihanoukville and proceed for Phnom Penh directly. YL is very keen on getting to Vietnam as quickly as possible. We're staying in another backpacker area. I forget the name of this place but it's hugging the Boeng Kak Lake in the northern part of central Phnom Penh. We are staying at a really SWEET place, Number 9 Sister Guesthouse (no it's not a guesthouse owned by a 9th sister, but rather, it is the sister guesthouse of Number 9 guesthouse *ahhhhh*) which sits directly on the lake! We spend almost all our time bumming in the common area playing pool, having a few beers and checking out the beautiful lake view. The street is littered with budget guesthouses and cheap farang food so we've been eating a record amount ... read more

We had forgotten to mention a few interesting things in the last post abt PP..here goes, in no particular order. When we had a few extra hrs, we happened to see a 'beauty salon' and Am thought she'd go check out their services. When asked how much it cost for eyebrows, they replied $1. It sounded good, but luckily she didn't jump on board immediately, and asked them if they threaded or waxed. We ddn't even think of any other possibility, but the woman looked confused, and pulled out a blade. Yes, a genuine steel blade. Am was in turn confused and initially thought there was some mechanism or some other contraption linked to it, but nope - thery really just use it directly! Well we definitely got out of there fast, thankful that we had ... read more

A final note from Cambodia. Tomorrow we return to Vietnam. Jasmine had a nice 15th birthday starting with the beach and ending with dinner at "The Snake House". The beach was very crowded (I should have brought a picture to load) do to Chinese NewYear lots of Khmers and lots of trash and the beggers and hawkers in full force. The Snake House is a restaurant with snake cages in the tables and a wide variety of poisonous snakes, fish, birds and a crocodile. Do to the Russian ownership they even had perogies on the menu, a favorite of Jasmine's. We are back in Phnom Penh now, my foot hurts, Trudy Cam and Jas are in the market. Added a couple pics from our highway stop a couple weeks ago where I tried the deep fried ... read more

NOTE: I had more pictures of the Angkor region to show you. Here they are, along with my journal entry for Phnom Penh. The road to the Cambodian capital from Siem Reap is smooth. The bus is inexpensive, and the journey is uneventful. All of these factors made for a very pleasant ride, indeed. I was compelled to write about this because you can take these things for granted when you live in Canada, and your average highway speed is 120km/hr on what I have now come to romanticize as billiard-table-smooth roads. Our arrival at the "bus station" was greeted with much fanfare from the local purveyors of intra-city transport. As far as two blocks away from our point of dis-embarkment that taxi and tuk-tuk drivers crowded the bus, peering in, looking for white faces: these ... read more

On the weekend of January 26th, the other volunteers and I went to Serendipity Beach in Sihanoukville. It is becoming more and more touristy, but the backpacker scene has not swallowed up the scenery. It was a wonderful place to relax. What truly gave character to the beach, however, and put it on the map for me, were all of the interactions I had with the young children that sold bracelets, fruit, and paintings. Here is a top 'nine' list of the phrases that were common amongst all of the children; clever phrases put together in interaction to effectively sell their wares: 1. I say: "I'll buy a bracelet tomorrow." They say: "You can lie to me, but you cannot lie to yourself." 2. "Do you know how you were born? From your mom and ... read more

It's been a very long time but... from Phi Phi we went to Phuket town where we spent two days checking out the city. There really wasn't much there, we did end up going to a Thai movie theater. There was only one movie that had english sub titles, so we had to go to that one. It was a pretty good movie, but they turn up the air con so high in the theater,I was shivering about 20 min into it. I felt like I was back home already!! From Phuket we went to Khao Lak, which is on the mainland, but still on the coast. From there we took a day diving trip to the Similin Islands where we got to dive with Manta Rays. They were so amazing, we saw about 6 and ... read more

At first Phnom Penh did not appeal the way most of Vietnam did. There was not the same buzz about the place. However, after a wee scout around we found it wasn't too bad after all. If we thought we had seen some horrifying acts of cruelty in Vietnam then there are no words to describe the genocide that took place in Cambodia under Pol Pot in the 1970s. Again we had read a book (First They Killed my Father) written by a survivor, so we had a fair idea of what to expect when we visited Tuol Sleng, a former High School used by the Khmer Rouge as a prison and torture centre. People were kept here, cuffed at the ankles, in huge rooms or single cells, tortured till they gave their 'confession', then taken ... read more
