Today I was OK, in the morning, and rested for a while. In the late morning, I made another trip into Stone Town. Stone Town was hot - contrasting to Britain at the moment from what I have heard. I went in on the daladala, the minibus type things (I will try to get a photo) very hot and crowded at points, but cost just 200 shillings - 10 pence. On my way to the daladala stop I walked by some kids coming out of a nearby school who were very excited to see me, surrounding me and wanting to say hello, as well as shake my hand. Although it was short of nice at first to get that much attention, after a little while I got fed up, and I went on my way. I ... read more

Boxing day has a very different purpose here. More on this later. Sadly I had a single bout of diarrhoea this morning, after a couple of normalish faeces. I suspect, as I ate more than I have been typically yesterday, that it is as a result of that. I don't think I still have any infection, but I think the lining of my intestines has been damaged slightly, possible resulting in something called malabsorption. When I get the lab results back, I will see my doctor and see what she thinks. I had a fairly quiet morning. In the afternoon I had another Swahili lesson. Next lesson I will starting going through a book and course. For today, we did another noun class, as well as many questions comparing life in Britain and Zanzibar. In the ... read more

Merry Christmas to all! Just a quick note of explanation, the reason there are two travelblogs marked 25th December is that I have decided to match up the day described with the date, so far I have always described the day before the date, so for one day, there will be two blogs as I change. The culture is different here, and so Christmas is different. Unfortunately my day didn't start brilliantly, as I was sick before breakfast, possibly due to some grass smoke. As a result I stayed at home to rest whilst most of the family went to church, dressed up in their best clothes. I had no long lasting problems from being sick, and by lunchtime a couple of other families had arrived, including some of Mama Sarah's eight sisters! I have some ... read more

Compared to the day before, yesterday was much quieter. I spent the day mostly resting again, although I made a short trip to the local shops. Appetite still not what it was, but as I am not getting that much exercise this is not too much of a problem. I haven't really lost much weight at all. In the evening I listened to Carols From Kings - on BBC World Service. Even though I may be many miles from Cambridge, I can still hear it on the radio. ... read more

Yesterday was by my recent standards a very busy day. In the morning I had a short trip to the hospital to drop off a stool sample, not sure when the results will be ready, but I have not heard yet. Fortunately I did not have any real problems in that department yesterday, with healthy stool. Unfortunately my appetite is still small, which is worrying me slightly. I ate a very small breakfast and lunch, although by tea (which was very late) my appetite was better. In the rest of the morning after taking the stool sample I rested. The Christmas Tree was put up and decorated during this time (in practise several branches rather than a whole tree). After lunch however I had my second Kiswahili lesson. Jecha cleared up some mistakes I have been ... read more

For once yesterday I was not greeted with diarrhoea. I went to see the doctor in the morning anyway, bring the stool sample from yesterday (which had been frozen) with me. After a little wait, (and a chat with the administrator Francis) I saw the Doctor. She told me the stool sample had to be taken in a sterile container, and that I would need to go to the labs to get one. So the stool sample I brought (taken in a matchbox) was binned. She was helpful enough, but little great change. Then I went with Francis to the labs to get a sterile container. Unfortunately they did not have one, and I was told it did not matter. The logic being stool is far from sterile. So I guess the now binned sample would ... read more

Again yesterday morning I was greeted with diarrhoea. I took a sample so it could be tested. I phoned Nuhu to arrange a visit to Mnazi Moja to see what tests they could do on it there. He came and visited, and then phoned the hospital before heading into the office, he said he would phone again when the car would come to pick me up. A total of four movements during the day. Yesterday morning I was able to have a shower for the first time in a while, as the water pump has been fixed. It felt very good! I spent much of the late morning and early afternoon doing my Kiswahili homework for my lesson later in the day. Including a whole 150 words on Cambridge. Sadly when the time for my Kiswahili ... read more

Woke up this morning hoping for good health. Sadly greeted after short while with another bout of diarrhoea (three bowel movements). Took sample to hospital to be tested, also Widal test for typhoid again. After being told to wait for two hours for results, decide to go back to the house, as it's only a short distance away. I could have walked if I felt ok, but catch a taxi instead, costing the equivalent of 75pence. Back at house get diarrhoea again, even though I have not eaten breakfast, and there's virtually nothing left in my digestive system. After two further diarrhoeal episodes of essentially clear liquid (as well as two loperamide and plenty of oral rehydration solution) feel it's time to head back to the hospital. I was getting worried that I was not actually ... read more

Once again, yesterday was spent resting. Not that much change. I thought about trying to go into the office in the morning, but still don't feel well enough. I took my last dose of the ciproflaxin at breakfast and my last dose of albendazole at lunch. The albendazole taken on it's own wasn't too bad really. Didn't feel bad like previous days, maybe that's due to the Hookworm's departure. Appetite improving. Feeling better generally. Faeces in the morning OK, though still not perfect. Pineapple, bread and a bit of some sort of pancake for breakfast, beef and rice for lunch, oysters and chapati for tea.... read more

Yesterday I spent resting and recovering. I still feel pretty weak, and the drugs are still making me feel ill. I spent the day mostly watching TV, listening to the radio and reading a newspaper. My faeces are staying fairly close to normal, but still not entirely normal. Hopefully once I am off the drug, they will be entirely normal. Immediately after lunch I actually felt quite well, I think some glucose slipped into me in the gap between the old dose of the drug running out, and the new dose getting started. Hopefully the worms did not feel similarly energised. They should have much small energy reserves though, they are microscopic after all. I also received a phone call from home, which also helped. Being at the house all the time, I am a bit ... read more
