Thursday, I worked with the Momma who prepares the food for the nursery. I wake early and ride with the driver to pick up the first set of children. Then after breakfast, I walk with Jacob to the nursery. Always we start by handing out cups of porridge. Then we fill large tubs with water and crouch on the ground washing the cups, rinsing and returning them wet. I have seen no towels or dry clothes anywhere, everyone just drip dries. The meal today is rice and vegetables, which takes a while to prepare. The vegetables are piles and piles of leaves like chard and bokchoy. We gather them in our hand in a tight bundle and then slice across their ends in narrow slices. Again we are crouched on the ground over a big pot; ... read more

Northern Serengeti part 2 Another great day on the Serengeti. Our guide SP continues to amaze with his great eye for wildlife and knowledge of the Serengeti and the world in general. The Tanzanian people are very educated, friendly and eager to share conversation. Today we again watched incredible gathering of the wildebeest across the river but no crossing. We are hopeful for crossing tomorrow am on the way out. Today we saw baby leopard cubs playing in their den, monkeys, many baboons in the field and a lion laying with his pride atop a rock out cropping in addition to many animals previously seen.Tomorrow off to the central Serengeti. We still can't believe we are here- more incredible than expected... More to come. Internet is scarce, as well as time, so not sure about timing ... read more

Northern Serengeti Another edge of the seat drive in Arusha to airport at 0630. Students in uniforms trying to get to school by walking or on back on pickups in face of major one road road traffic with crazy drivers and farmed carrying goods to market on hand or donkey drawn carts. Total pandemonium but no deaths that we saw.Airplane a small single engine cessna, with interesting flight over Masai villages and Ngorogoro Crater. Landed at Kotogende airstrip. Picked up by Africa 365 guide "SP". Interesting day watching wildebeest massing by the ten thousands along the Mara river for a crossing that did not happen today-maybe we will get lucky tomorrow. Spottings of a rare rhino in this area, elephants, hippos, zebras, cape buffalo, giraffe, and many others. Did not arrive at lodge until dark. Amazing place with panoramic view ... read more

Arrived in Tanzania after an eventful flight from Heathrow (UK) via Nairobi (Kenya). The flight to Nairobi i enjoyed as i was sat next to a Kenyan lady who worked for the UN and on the other side a young doctor who was off to Uganda for 2 weeks. Nairobi is the hub for most East African flight transfers. Before leaving the Falkland Islands i noticed on the news that the airport had recently had a bad fire. After arriving (it was hot! - temperature that is, not the fire, that was out) we were directed down to the basement into a very confined space with little in the way of windows and ventilation. It wasn't the most pleasing news to hear that the plane had been delayed for a few hours. In the corner everyone ... read more

I have now been home for a week. I left Arusha on the 5th of February and made my way to Ethiopia for an overnight stay. I then travelled to Johannesburg and then home to Sydney. My final days in Africa were spent organising a safari for mum and then exploring Arusha on my own once she left. I visited many markets and experienced daily life. Staying in the one place for quite a while allowed me to see how people live. Sitting up on the rooftop bar at my hostel and looking out onto the streets of Arusha, I could see and hear the daily lifestyle of the african people. So many are unemployed and walk the streets all day just trying to make ends meet. The noises at night were so loud I felt ... read more

Justin picked us up at the lodge at 8:30am in the second morning. Our safari tour officially started from Arusha National Park. The perimeter of Arusha National Park is only several miles to Arusha, but its main gate is about 40 miles away from the city. Although the size is small, the park has diversified geographical features, including Mt. Meru, Merella lake, forest and grassland over the Ngurdoto Crater. About an hour later, we parked our car at the entrance. While Justin was checking in at the office, we saw several giraffes walking in a bush about 200 feet from us. It’s our first wildlife encounter in Africa, understandably we were quite excited. The entrance gate leads into shadowy forest. We started seeing more animals, including groups of zebras and buffaloes. We stopped at a ranger ... read more

The decision to visit Tanzania at the year end was really made during Thanksgiving holidays. It's possible to get ready in such a short time is because I already did my research and had contacted several travel agencies, especially the one we finally chose, Base Camp Tanzania, when we struggled between the trip to Antarctica and Eastern Africa a year early. The trip was confirmed only a couple of days after Thanksgiving and we were on our way three weeks later. Our trip started at Arusha, which is served by Kilimanjaro International Airport for international travelers. KLM is the only major airline offers direct flight to the airport. It was our longest connecting flights so far. We had totally 21 hours in the air. Layover time was shorter than our other trips, but we were lucky ... read more

I went around Tanzania & Uganda to meet with friends from 2009 & my sponsor child, and to volunteer at an orphanage & a school + medical center... 3000km on African busses, fun. In this time I learned a lot about my friends in Africa, how they struggle with getting by. Note that this section is the longest and involves mainly the stories of people I met. So if that interests you, read on. July 16th - I left home & family for a 4 month solo journey into the unknown with a 60lb backpack & a tent. Only 2 hours before my flight took off I said goodbye to my Vavo for the last time. July 19th - I arrived in Tanzania Africa at 5pm in a city called Dar-es Salam, where a friend named ... read more
