I am a Falkland Islander that is about to embark on 3-4 months of travel. I am a keen amateur photographer and have a passion for the outdoors. I am also a big lover of food! I look forward to sharing my experiences and welcome any advice in regards to the countries I am visiting (Uk, Tanzania and Thailand are certainties).

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok October 23rd 2013

After leaving Heathrow (UK) at 8.30pm Monday, I arrived in Bangkok at midnight Tuesday/Wednesday. It was an arduous journey, seriously testing the mental breaking point. I was suffering from 'man flu' which I developed before leaving the UK. Due to suffering acute Labrynthitis (inner ear inflammation) several years ago, when knackered i find concentration hard. This is not helpful when you plan to read and watch movies for 24 hour, i ruled out sleep as i tend to struggle on planes, although i do have the knack of falling asleep whilst landing. How annoying! Anyway, I flew Air China landing into Beijing. I am not sure whether it was a particular hazy day or it was the smog that i could see, regardless it was very murky. I did ponder how i would get through 6 ... read more

Arrived in Tanzania after an eventful flight from Heathrow (UK) via Nairobi (Kenya). The flight to Nairobi i enjoyed as i was sat next to a Kenyan lady who worked for the UN and on the other side a young doctor who was off to Uganda for 2 weeks. Nairobi is the hub for most East African flight transfers. Before leaving the Falkland Islands i noticed on the news that the airport had recently had a bad fire. After arriving (it was hot! - temperature that is, not the fire, that was out) we were directed down to the basement into a very confined space with little in the way of windows and ventilation. It wasn't the most pleasing news to hear that the plane had been delayed for a few hours. In the corner everyone ... read more

Another late start, 9.30am and after a shower I went with Sam to Fulham to get some freebie house stuff from his course mates. We went to a good burger joint and had monkey nuts as an entree, they are almost as much fun as eating prawns. I did like Sam's homemade onion rings as well. Nice area Fulham. After returning on the bus we then took the furniture to pieces to speed up moving the next day. After this it was time to buy a few Friday afternoon pints. Before this I had to buy myself a new pair of trainers. The employees face was a picture when I tried a pair on and as a result threw the old pair I was wearing in the bin, all or nothing when it comes to shopping. I ... read more

I am impressed that i blogged 4 days in a row, now i have to blog for the least 2 days and try to remember the highlights from each day. Wednesday - On route to the centre i decided to jump off the underground at Knightsbridge and take a look at Harrods. The place is huge! loved the lower floor especially with all the foods, particularly the fish counter and cheeses. I have to admit i got lost on the other floors, in fact to the extent that i considered downloading the Harrods app for the iphone to find my way out! my jaw dropped why i found myself on the floor that contained designer pet clothing, a facility to groom your pets and unbelievably a pet spa. My 2 cats Fern and Fachine do get ... read more

After a slow start to the morning Sam and I ventured into the centre of the city to go and visit FIGO. We departed the train at Victoria station, which is one of the main stations in London. As you walk out of the station one of the first buildings that you see is the theatre that performs Billy Elliot. FIGO is located very close to New Scotland Yard. FIGO was fairly quiet as it is the party conference season here at the moment. It was good though to catch up with Colin and James. Whilst anything is an option at the moment, i am hoping to change my flight back to the FI from the 18th to the 22nd December, the result being i am not weight listed. It was also very good to see ... read more

There is not a lot to report from this morning, largely as i was blogging until 2am and then I didn't wake up until 10.30am. I did have to crawl out of my sack though when Cockers new 42" inch smart TV arrived. It is always a pleasure to see a fully grown man as excited as a 5 year old at Xmas. Actually once he had connected it to the internet i was also rather intrigued. We had lunch at home and then left the house to head into town. After a bit of 'googling' i managed to find a camera shop near Covent Garden. I am taking photos with the iphone at the moment as the DSLR needs needs an MOT to clean the sensor. Good news is that I should be back on ... read more

After waking up early and blogging day 1 I was far too excited to go back to sleep and daylight was sneaking through. Strangely at this early hour I reflected upon rural development, in that I was in London, a global technology hub and boiling a kettle on the gas stove. Last time his happened to me I melted an electric one staying with friends in New Zealand. Of course Sam and Anna are aware of electric kettles, they are just in the process of moving house! I often get excited about the tiniest of things, today's first excitement was utilising ITV player over the Internet (unlimited broadband I may add). What a great app along with BBC iplayer. X factor and a cup of tea it was, does it get more British than that! ( ... read more

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go! - Unlike John Denver, I managed to restrict myself to 10kg's and half a rucksack. Impressive considering that includes the Digital SLR, gifts, mail to forward on and Penguin News quests. Note to self, must buy boxers and socks tomorrow as I left most of them in the airing cupboard! After a few leaving drinks in the Victory Bar, cobwebs were brushed aside and the journey started at 6am on Friday. Leaving Stanley and the layer of ice (flat soles poor choice), departed Stanley with Dad and Leif. Check in was speedy which allowed plenty of time for the FIC West Store 'Mega breakfast' (just in case they don't do the full English in London!). Thank you Dad and Leif for the lift. Despite the Friday the ... read more
