Elizabeth ... read more

so this is it. ive left my village. well ill be back. which is good. things have been going well. i still have high hopes that the market will be finished by the time i leave. the builder was sick but i think hes fine now. and since the bricks are done thats the most difficult work behind us. so hopefully when i return in a couple of weeks there will be a building standing there. that would be very v cool. i really cant believe where all the time has gone. everything has just been happening so fast. i guess the biggest deal is that the people from solar aid came out. i think their journey out to the vill was successful. marianne from the london office came out. she just graduated with a product ... read more

so quite a bit has happened in the last month or so. most notably is that supplies for the market have been purchased. this is very exciting. so building will begin soon. well. thats the idea. we were able to use trucks from the district. but of course these werent very good. so on thursday when we were supposed to do two trips of cement/wood/everything we could only do one because the axle? broke on the way back. so we did the rest on friday. but on monday i am meeting my mwenyekiti (chairperson) in town to ask for the use of a different car to transport sand/rocks/gravel to the construction site. but that stuff is located in the village. or close to it anyhow. so i think brick construction should be happening soon. if not ... read more

so im already back in town. its only saturday. i couldnt stand to be in the village for any longer. and when i was headed back on monday it felt so right. so natural. i was happy. i wanted to make sure to document that in a journal entry. that did not last long. so like i said i headed back monday. and people were excited to see me. one guy told me he thought i went back to america. good. it was nice to see people again. nice to be home. the first burn (not that bad actually) was that gus (my second dog) died. apparently im no good with pets. i think he might have had the same things as chai. i wasnt that upset. i didnt even cry. i wasnt attached but he ... read more

making a second update in such short amount of time. i guess i dont really have that much to say. just some random stuff. i have found out that singida is the poorest region on the mainland, pemba being the poorest overall. so the people here feel the increase in fuel prices and just everything. talking with one of my brothers in the village he is very gung-ho to leave. he finished secondary school last year and is very excited to start police training in kilimanjaro soon. talking to the pcvs who have been here for awhile they say theyve noticed an increase in crime/theft since they first got here a couple years ago. i guess there were three buses that were hijacked/mugged. and my camera incident isnt within the norm-nothing like that had every happened ... read more

hmmm. so since i last updated... i visited lake singida with justin and jacob. that was nice. we climbed up on these really big rocks and sat down in the sun. its really pretty up there. there used to be a flock of flamingos but apparently they all disappeared with the drought a few years back. and there are lizards that are bright blue and red aka superman lizards. anyways we got some snacks from the safi (nice) duka and ate them. aka chocolate milk and cookies. i returned back to my village from town on tuesday. took the dala dala back for the first time. and i was super tired/sick ish. and of course there were numerous delays. like a truck broke down in the middle of the road. then i dont even know. but ... read more

Hi everyone, Sorry I've been so useless at updating this site but I only get internet access once a week and the connection is so slow I only just have time to check emails etc. So we've been in our camp in the village of Mvae for 2 weeks now. When I say village it's more of a large rural area. There is a small village centre consisting of a few mud hut shops...one of which doubles as a bar big enough for 4 people, I kid you not. Suz, Ed and myself tested it out after getting a bit lost on a walk the other day! Very bizarre experience sitting in the tiniest 'pub' in the world drinking beer mid-afternoon with one of the local schoolteachers on his lunchbreak while half the village peered in ... read more
