So having spent a peaceful night in Stellenbosch it was time to set off for the Cape of Good Hope and Paula and I's last full day together in the car. Breakfast turned into a disaster as the night before I had picked up some bread in the supermarket and that morning we soon learned why it was the only bread left on the shelves as it was as solid and heavy as a rock and after one slice it was settled in the stomach like a layer of cement. Needless to say it was decided that the rest of the loaf could be donated to any other travel who dared eat it! With a rough idea of which way we were heading (which involved driving through the centre of Cape Town we set off). The ... read more

Slept like a baby, was tired after the trek yesterday, didn't know I had so many bones that could ache :) Made plans to stay at Cape Town tonight and go to Stellenbosch tomorrow, taking BazBus (that's the backpackers bus here) and will be staying at a dorm. Let's see how my community living experience turns out :) On my way to Cape Point from the cottage, I saw Ostriches. And when we reached Cape Point, realized that I had forgotten to drop the keys off, so had to go back. Well, as they say, something good comes out of everything, saw an Eland on my way to drop the keys, that's the largest Antelope here and a sighting is rare (they run away hearing traffic noise). Got to Cape Point, took the funicular up (its ... read more

Have got food, alcohol, music n myself for company. No TV. Perfect :)... read more

Was picked up by the tour operator at Cape Point, the crowd was an elderly group of Germans, Swedes and Australians. They debated my age hotly, their best guess was 81 born. Man, people never get that one right :) We stopped for lunch at Simon's Town, the driver was a Dutch guy settled in South Africa, he told us an amazing story of "Able Man Just Nuisance". Simon's Town was a British Navy base during World War II and once a soldier befriended a dog. He brought the dog (a Big Dane) to his quarters, soldiers weren't allowed to keep pets, but the officers ignored the issue. As the Dane grew, he started accompanying the soldiers when they went from Simon's Town to Cape Town, for wine and women. The dog will wait at the ... read more

Cape Point is the south western most point of Africa (its a misnomer that its the southernmost point, actually Cape Aghulas which is 230 km from Cape Town is the southernmost point and that's where Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean meet, but few people go there because there is very little to do there). Cape Point, the more popular of the two is inside the Cape of Good Hope Nature reserve. With the desire of spending time hiking at Cape Point, I booked myself at Elands Cottage (booked online, they won't take the booking of a single person on phone). Little did I know what I was getting myself into What I didn't know (and didn't do enough research on) is Elands Cottage is a completely inaccessible place in the nature reserve, in terms of public ... read more

The forecast is for today to be the best weather of our three days in Cape Town, so Jessy has rearranged our itinerary a bit. Instead of city activities today, we have been driving along the coast. It is a gorgeous day -- blue skies, some white fluffy clouds, warm and breezy. We are driving alongside the Atlantic, which is crashing powerfully onto rock and sand beaches. We have just stopped at the "end of the world", billed as the southwestern most point of Africa (which actually doesn't make a lot of sense to me when I look at a map, as it is neither the most southern nor the most western, but I guess if you stretch logic it is the most southwestern...) -- Cape Point. We got up at 8 this morning, relatively well-rested ... read more

NAME HERE On Monday August 24th, Jen Tiffany and I rented a car. We decided to see South Africa with our own agenda. Renting the car was one of the hardest things that I did since being in Africa. We set up reservations with one company to get an automatic car and a gps. When the car company picked us up they took us to one location to pay for the gps, then they had to take us to a completely different car rental company to get the car. When we got to the second car rental company they tried to charge a higher price than what was originally quoted, which in the long run was the price we paid. Then when we got the car, the gps was not in it, so we had to ... read more

Hi Everybody! Well, we finally got to do a couple of tours. It's been cloudy and raining everyday but one since we arrived. We did get to go to the National Aquarium our first day because it's inside. Then spent the next few days wondering around the mall, it's gigantic. Every store you can imagine. Finally on Monday we did a tour with Daytrippers. It was great, they really pack your day full of fun. We traveled down the coast and stopped at Hout Bay, took a boat ride out to Seal Island to watch the Cape Fur Seals. They were great. The big ones, which are as big as a bear when grown, mostly ignored us. But the little ones would come close to the boat and look at us and clap thier fins together, ... read more

Well, as per usual it’s taken me awhile to post this blog, in this case though I knew this would be the final one and it was actually a little difficult for me to come to terms with this fact as I really didn’t want the trip to end. (Also I left the SD card with all my photos in the Bodrum Hilton and just got them back!) Having started back in Shanghai in May it took me ten months to make it to the Cape of Good Hope. Along the way I had great adventures and met many interesting and wonderful people…I can’t wait to get out and do the next one! ... read more

Day 2 (Wednesday 22-Apr-09, JRJ) Woke up at 8:15 refreshed after a great nights sleep to the news that the Liverpool - Arsenal score was 4 - 4! Fan-fricken-tastic! Not much to do in Capetown - so decided to hire a car which was only £15 a day. I went to the car hire place to collect our little shitty 1.1 Corsa, came back to hostel for Nat and off we went to explore the Cape Peninsula. On the way out of Capetown we got a bit lost, but eventually found the M6 to take us to Cape Point. Drove past a few more townships on the way - we can't get over how big these places are and how many people must live in them. We drove through Muizenberg, Simonstown and Boulders Beach (where we ... read more
