On arriving at the hostel in St Lucia I was shown around and dumped my bags in my room. I was then taken on a free tour of the town and local area by the guide Darren. We drove down to the estuary where we came across a herd of hippos sat on a bank along with approximately 10 crocodiles. After a brief stop at the beach we then drove down through the town and he pointed out the al important supermarket, butchers, restaurants and bars. After dinner that night Darren and the hostel manager Philip took us on a night safari. However their night safari didn't involve us going out into the reserve but driving around the back streets. Whilst this sounds mad we did actually get to see quite a few bush babies close ... read more

Yet again the Internet cafe blocks their USB ports so I am still unable to post pics. But we departed Mozambique on Monday and headed to Swaziland, Africa's only absolute monarchy. It was a great country with very friendly people. We visited a Swazi village and took a hike in a game park. In the nights we stayed in these "beehive huts" which were domes covered in reeds (but electricity and our own bathrooms inside so very swanky). Yesterday, we departed Swaziland and crossed the border back to South Africa, where I will be for the rest of the trip. We will travel mostly along the coast. Right now we are in the small coastal town of St. Lucia, where most of us are just relaxing and we have a boat cruise to search for hippo ... read more

We're leaving South Africa in 2 days time. But I've had just enough time to be bitten or stung by something (see photo) it looks worse than it feels, it doesn't hurt unless the area is touched and then it burns. The pharmacist suggested a jelly fish sting, although I've been in the sea a lot I don't remember feeling anything sting me. There are many things that bite sting or itch here so it could be anything. Because of the heat we'd love to open the widows at night but all manner of dangerous winged characters invite themselves in so it can't be done. At more or less the same time as the rash on my side flared up the skin under my right eye has swollen up and crusted a little making me look ... read more

*little story* PICKED ON BY NATURE........ The last day before we left the yengele house to head to Durban and onto St Lucia we went for a day walk in a nature reserve. It statred promisingly enough, a nice forest walk and not too hot. Butterflies and birds and seeing a couple of large monitor lizards clattering away through the forest away from us. Then the trail headed into dripping jungle type forest. I noticed straight away there were these small sort of triangular-ish red spiders in their webs strung across the trail ahead. I knew from the time I came to South Africa before to avoid these spiders, they're not dangerous but can give you an unpleasant rash if you have contact with them. From there on in this trail turned into a spider safari, ... read more

Hello all again, it lovely to read your messages that you have left for me... keeps me going in the between the weeks of no internet!! So, this last week has been exciting, my little sojourn into the unknown wilds of South Africa has been interesting, and different to living back in Kanyamazane. Leaving the hostel in Nelspuit last week, saw me get on a bus for Swaziland instead of jo'burg (intentional), so i ended up in the middle of the lushest, greenest place in SA i have seen so far. Swaziland has a different vibe to it, you can't put your finger on it, but its more 'relaxed' than SA, excenuated (a word?) by the fact that its a monarchy in charge, King Mswati III, (14 wives by the way... lucky bugger...although one recently tried ... read more

29 Oct - a few sore heads after Janet's birthday but we head off bright and early to Zululand. The scenery is just getting better and better. We arrive at St Lucia Estuary and set up camp at the backpackers. First time camping for a few days and the heavens open while I'm on kitchen duty...although most of the tent was secure the window on my side was rolled up. Aaaaarrrghhh, v soggy sleeping bag and mattress, no nice. Campsite v muddy and the young backpackers are partying in the bar until 4.30am and then we're up at 5am for game drive, I'm not amused, as if I would be up partying until that time...on a school night... 30 Oct - drive to Umofolozi Game Park. Just sign up for a half day's game drive as ... read more

Day eight July 11th: Greater St Lucia Wetland Park There was a lot of eating (great for a foodie like me) and a lot of driving on this trip, I’ve never napped so much in my life. I can only hope noone else got a similar shot of me. We took a cruise on lake St Lucia where we saw many a hippo and crocodiles and a few birds. We had lunch on board. More pictures to illustrate. img=http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh95/mydash... read more

EN FRANCAIS PLUS BAS MORE PHOTOS HERE Hannah's croc pics here and more morning hike and kayak sunset trip pics Once again, as I am set to take the bus, it rains. Lucky me. Saint Lucia is a small beach town, or street rather, surrounded by monkeys, hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, impalas, warthogs, leopards, buffalos, elephants and the like, all roaming around freely around the area. During the two morning walks through the unfenced park, we get to see most of these, except the shyest, leopards, and weirdly enough, the biggest, elephants and buffalos, who are apparently pretty good at hiding! My friend Caro had warned me against the kayak trip on the e... read more

My last week at African Impact in Saint Lucia was lovely. We got five new volunteers…a few of which are also on the photography project. There was one day we were driving into Khula Village and I was looking at the homes and the roads, and while they are somewhat primitive it does not appear to be “third world”, however I will note that this is what I envisioned St. Lucia to be more like prior to my arrival. It seems to look like the times we are in now and maybe that is again my expectations playing tricks on me…it got me thinking about what it could have looked liked many years ago and I realized it may not have looked so different…I think what I was expecting to see was a picture in my ... read more

Happy New Year from St Lucia in KwaZulu Natal, a village at the heart of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. Or rather, as they renamed it last month, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. We arrived here yesterday lunchtime. St Lucians seem to share with the Americans an aversion to the idea of going anywhere using those outdated contraptions at the bottom of your body called legs. The lady at our guesthouse looked stunned when she opened the electric gates to her property and we trotted in carrying our backpacks, rather than rolling in on four wheels. The stunned look turned to a look of horror from her and her husband when, after a walk round town, I arrived back later on in the day sans Gemma, who had decided to walk on to the beach. "But ... read more
