After writing off Saturday (bad barbecue effects) we decide to go on a tour of Johannesburg and Soweto. Eschewing the hotel recommended tour guides we take a recommendation from a friend and procure ourselves a local outfit - after some delay Charles turns up and we start our own personalised tour. Johannesburg is a huge, sprawling conurbation merging into Pretoria and with satellite cities around it. Even on a Sunday it takes time to get around it. First stop is the house where Mandela lived until his recent death. It's in an affluent jacaranda tree lined road in Haughton - it's quiet with no one else there when we arrive. A single car on the drive signifies family members are at home. On the verge are small flower beds with painted stones giving best wishes to ... read more

You can't come to Johannesburg and not go to Soweto. You can't go to Soweto and not do the politics. It's a place that confirms your knowledge (yes it's a township with huts, dirt tracks, shared taps and illegally tapped electricity) and it also confounds your perceptions (it's affluent in parts, very middle class in parts, there is wealth and its on show - BMWs on drives of beautiful villas covered in bouganvillea). its refreshing. There are lots of primary and secondary schools and two universities. The importance of education as a way of advancevent for the individual and society is well understood - which is different to ten years ago. There is clearly aspiration - talking to Charles he sets out the ambition of people and he says the juxtaposition of middle class achievement is ... read more

Geo: -26.1538, 28.0389Our initial plans for Johannesburg were very limited- we had heard all of the warnings about Joburg and the downtown area in particular remains something of a war zone. Johannesburg is the second largest city in Africa with over 3 million people calling it home and crime remains one of its biggest challenges. We picked a hotel in the relatively safe Sandton area which even offered an airport pickup service. Unbeknownst to us this pickup service came with the services of a very proud and passionate South African driver who soon convinced us that we had to explore a little bit more of Johannesburg (Joburg to the locals) particularly the famous/infamous Soweto Township which was Ground Zero for many of the bigger Apartheid related struggles. We made arrangements with our new friend, Themba, Themba's passion for ... read more

Here I go! My first blog ever and chuffed that I've got this far! Four more sleeps till we jet out of OR Tambo and head for Morocco. Woop woop ... the excitement is building. The stacking and more stacking and still more stacking ... and then a little packing ... has begun. Those two little words, "travel light" roll off the tongue so easily, but when push comes to shove, eeeeeek, "what to pack??????". I may be dubious about the clothing to pack but some things I am in no doubt about. My "stash" .... especially for the exciting moment on take-off, feeling the thrust of the jet engines under my butt, for that pensive moment when I spot the hunk sitting in the isle opposite me and especially for the moment that I realize ... read more

Firstly, a song................ I hear the drums echoing tonight But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation She's coming in twelve-thirty flight Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation I stopped an old man along the way Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies He turned to me as if to say: "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you" It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa Gonna take some time to do the things we never had Toto (1982) Departing 23 September 2014 on Qantas via Sydney to Johannesburg Exciting times!... read more

19 July: Johannesburg day tour Our day started early with a breakfast of yogurt and fruit with our tour guide picking us up at 7AM to take us around Johannesburg area. Our first stop on the tour was to Soweto. We started off in the nice area of Sweto where the houses looked liked they could have been anywhere in the world. He then showed us the dorms where the workers used to live but now it is just occupants waiting for the government houses to be built (a Mandela project). Continuing our drive, we went by a new university built in the area so that kids can see it everyday and hopefully encourage them to go. Also, it was built so that children could go to university without having to go to the main city. ... read more

Geo: -26.1538, 28.0389July 1Did our final pack and got to the airport and said our goodbyes to Rob. They didn't charge us for the second bag we checked. Ate one last breakfast at the Mugg and Bean and then out to the boarding area. Call for our flight and we took the bus out to the plane but OOOPS!, they had taken us to the wrong plane. Found the correct plane, very nice and had a pleasant flight to Llongwe.Landed in Llongwe without a hitch and had the usual backlog clearing customs and immigration. Each person is photographed, their finger and thumb prints scanned and then you are free to go. But, of course this takes time. They came and pulled us out of the line to go to the head of a new line. Once ... read more

A new adventure awaits in the African continent. Only 3yrs after our last visit we are off for some more safari, a little glamping and a Wedding in Victoria Falls. So in 4 days time we get on BA's biggest bird for a wee hop to Jo'burg to meet up with Laurence and Alida. Let's hope Kruger lives up to it's great animal spotting of 2011. Lots of tales to be told in summer 2014.... read more
