I have made it to Johannesburg, South Africa; it was almost like arriving back in the United States. Suddenly, I am thrust back into traffic, Mc Donald’s, furniture stores and strip malls. I feel like I have left Africa and the transition is abrupt. For those that have only traveled to South Africa it is possible to be here and not truly see what the majority of what Africa is really like. This is a country of progress, High Speed Internet, Mercedes and TV commercials just like at home. Now don’t get me wrong, the poor here are as desperate as any in the world, but what South Africa has that the other countries that I have visited don’t, is opportunity. People here are have more opportunties then other nations in Africa, similar to the US. ... read more

12:24am Just going to sleep at the Holiday Inn. Not a bad set of flights. I'm not over tired. We'll be several hours behind schedule, as the guys get in to JNB @ 10:30am. Then we'll head to Swaziland by car. Jim, Dean, and Miles got in, but they're missing 4 of their bags. So, we stayed @ JNB Holiday Inn another night. We'll leave for Swaziland in the morning. It didn't feel like a very productive day, but at least everybody is here. We drove the rental van around a bit. That was a hoot. Deano and I got dinner at a sort of neighborhood steak joint. It was a little strange. ... read more

Farewell Australia My mum was ordering a birthday cake for my brother when he called, ‘Bek, I don’t think I can make it to dinner tonight.’ I was fuming but held my temper. It was my farewell and his surprise birthday party. I watched my mum go to the effort of selecting a cake and dictating the message, ‘It’s my farewell dinner. Why can’t you make it?’ ‘I’ve made a booking at the restaurant under my name but my girlfriend has this problem you see and she needs my car…..’ I didn’t want to hear the rest of it. He will not get away this time, not when the entire family (and I mean small community) had put aside tonight to be there for his surprise birthday and my farewell. Steph had called earlier asking about ... read more

Flew CPT to JNB on Comair flight MN702, a 737-200. I was in seat 12E. We had a few hours to kill at JNB airport until our flight home after 9pm. This flight would make a stop in Ilha do Sal. I remember seeing that and thinking Sal??? Are we stopping in San Salvador??? The actual code is SID and our flight would go JNB-SID-JFK. The stop was made due to the elevation of JNB airport. The flight was routine and soon we were all waking up to land in Sal. There was a quick crew change and a few people boarded. We all joked about getting pulled off here due to no space. At sunrise on November 5, we were in JFK. We had cleared immigration quickly and they went off to LGA to get ... read more

Finally there! It is the afternoon of October 29, and we are in JNB! Our driver was waiting for us and soon we were in a van heading to Sun City. My buddies wanted to go here. I really did not care about it. I mean we live in Vegas, who wants to see more casinos! Oh well, I am glad we went. It was fun and relaxing. The drive took a few hours and we mostly napped. When we got there, it was off to the pool and to get some lagers. We had stayed there 24 hours and got to see a lot, especially the nightlife. We stayed at the Sun City Cabanas. We had a hard time finding any decent food here and by the time we had to leave, we were starved. ... read more

That is all I heard from friends and relatives in the weeks leading up to my trip to South Africa. I heard such things as "nice knowing you" and "you will be eaten by lions or killed in a race riot" On the day I flew out, a fellow employee said "I will look for you on CNN"! The date was October 28, 1994. I was going to South Africa and I was excited! This would be only my second trip off of the North American continent. I had worked the night before until 2am, went home and got ready and went back to the airport at 5. I flew Delta 974, a 757 from LAS to SLC, and was seated in 2B. The next leg was Delta 1424, a 767-300 to JFK. Once again, I ... read more

Arriving in South Africa from West Africa it was evident that an altogether different vibe was in operation. South Africa had instituted Apartheid in 1948 and it effects were fully in evidence in 1968. Coming from the segregated airport the driver murmured the most disgusting racial epithets about Black African passerby on the street. I'd never heard anything like it anywhere and it was truly shocking. Yet that was years before economic sanctions were applied to South Africa. American cars, manufactured in South Africa with right-hand drive, were the norm and a large billboard proclaimed "Alles is Beter mit Groot Groot Coke" in Afrikaans. Johannesburg was a modern city by then, but with several differences, notably Apartheid. There was no television broadcasting, only radio, television would have been dependent on external sources of programming. A department ... read more
