The end of the overland adventure and we say goodbye to everyone (and the truck!). We’ve arranged to be picked from the Putfontein Rd exit of the road into to Jo’burg by Juan of Mufasa Backpackers. Dumi overshoots though so we end up clambering up the embankment with all our kit (heavy work)! Mufasa ( named after the lion king character) is a nice place; big gardens, nice pool, and a large room with ensuite. Thought we’d like a bit of privacy after 35 days of communal living. Juan does a braai (BBQ) for supper - chicken, steak, succulent pork, corn, salads and pumpkin ( mixed with butter & sugar - to die for) - terrific and all for less than a fiver each! All washed down with some nice & v cheap SA wine.. Wireless ... read more

Bye Bye Bela I was enjoying the long, interesting ride back from Bela Bela, on back roads, seeing less clean and organised areas, getting information from Johannes about the differences since the end of Apartheid and how there is still quite a ways to go. Near Pretoria, back on to the Highway, four lanes in each direction at high speeds, we saw a man lying on the road with a car signalling for help...he had just been hit trying to cross eight lanes of fast traffic!!! Unexplainable! "This is Africa." The explanation for anything out of the ordinary. Get used to it. Make plans expecting everything to go differently, or don't make them and just go with the flow! My shock was at the sillyness of the attempt, and at the nonchalance of the driver ... read more

Airport Pal Continuing with my sinchronicity adventures, on the shuttle to the bed and breakfast, I met a young Canadian of Pakistani descent who was working in Dubai and was on a quick, get-away week in Johannesburg. We got along marvellously and ended up going out for pool and beers. The next morning, he asked if I would join him in Sun City, about two hours away and where there was supposed to be more happening. I agreed on the name alone! He said he had booked a big place and a bunch of his friends were going to be joining him in a couple days, so I could stay until then. There was also the possibility to see some animals nearby, too. All in all, it seemed like a great plan and good company, ... read more

A week ago we left Kilifi, spending our last morning there at Upendo. Some of the kids were clingy, some showed more fascination than normal with my watch as we counted down the minutes we had left there, and some were oblivious to our impending departure, and we raced around and sang songs like any other day. In the end, we left hurriedly as a traffic jam on the Mombasa Road meant our trip to the airport would be a slow one. Mama Rachel and most of the kids escorted us part of the way home to sneak in a last few minutes together, and so we said our goodbyes on a dirt road in the backstreets of Kilifi. I struggled to contain tears at the kids’ farewell gestures of a kiss to the back of ... read more

On Monday we flew from Cape Town to Johannesburg, where we're staying with a friend, Renata (we worked together in the OT dept at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, about 18months ago) - has been lovely catching up with her and her boyfriend, Nuno, who also worked at the JR, in the Physio dept. We managed to time our arrival well to coincide with Renata's Birthday, so went out for dinner on Monday night with some of her family and friends. We've also seen around Wits University (where Renata studied), survived driving through the Central Business District (despite Renata being unable to promise us that we wouldn't be shot), and seen the Neslon Mandela Bridge. Yesterday we went to the Apartheid Museum - took a long time to get round, but very interesting, and then spent ... read more

Despite one South African bloke taking one look at the rather tired looking Nissan and stating "Don't worry lads no-one is going to carjack you in THAT", Raz and Uzi were in constant fear of being car jacked and mugged at every junction in South Africa. So an offer from Nan, Phil, and Haley we met at Kgaswane Park to lead us into Jo'burg to Backpackers Ritz was very welcome as it put the army boys at ease, and it meant we were sure not to get lost. Not that we doubt your navigations skills lads! 8 ) The first thing that struck us about driving into the burg was how much money there seemed to be about. I have only ever seen as many Mercs, Beemers, Audis, and Porches around Frankfurt, and the main road ... read more
