Well it took a while for me to get here and honestly the number of stories I have saved up in doing so would take a day and a half to recall and you all don't have that kind of time...so I'll give you the abbreviated version and you can ask me more later. Missed my connecting flight in Paris and spent the day in Charles de Gaul waiting for the next flight. I drank 6 dollar expressos trying to stay awake and deal with the jet lag before I got to South Africa. It worked, barely, and at 11pm that night I got on the plane to Joburg and passed out for the next 10 hours or so. I spent one night in Johannesburg and then travelled with other researchers to Blydespoort where we met ... read more

By the time you read this final entry to our Blog, Christine and I will be home after a fantastic trip. South Africa is the last stage of our round the world trip and in many respects we feel we have saved the best until last. It is by far the most interesting country we have visted. It is not always comfortable to be here and especially in the cities, but there is so much to see and do and a great climate. Flying into CapeTown, with the sun rising over the Drakensberg Mountains was a real treat. Great views of the city and Table Mountain. Although initially sunny, by the third day we experienced a fifty year record drop in temperatures and even had some snow when we ventured to the top of Table ... read more

Well I finally made it to the Southern Hemisphere, about 9 hours later than I should have. My flight last night was delayed out of Ben Gurion due to a terrorist training activity (I kid you not) at the airport. The airline was kind enough to put us up in some pretty fancy digs down on Tel Aviv Beach, at the Carleton Hotel. It's kind of like the Ritz, but Israeli-fied. They gave us this humongous dinner at 2am, that nobody really particularly wanted, and I went to my room, a little too wound up to sleep. I left Israel (finally) this morning at 9am, and the flight was long and uneventful except for the fact that it was full of Israelis and their children. The child in front of me unfurled a KITE on the ... read more

Hey everyone!! Not much internet access here, so this will be short and sweet - the pics will speak for themselves. Left Hali June 3rd after writing our last final and moving apartments. Missed a flight to Qatar. Spend a day in London because of it. Got to Johannesburg June 5th with my travel buddies, Chris Nash and Erin Palmer. Went on safari to Kruger National Park. It was freezing (we slept in treehouses), but beautiful - saw lots of animals, ate delicious meals, hung out with the South Africans, good times. June 9th we had an intense day in Jo'burg - google apartheid if you want to understand why we visited these places. First went to top of Africa (tallest building in continent - apparently). Then went to Soweto (South Western Townships), largest township in ... read more

The past couple of days have been filled with work, starting from nine in the morning to half past four. I’ve been building a fence out of cane sticks around an enclosure for the herd of goats, it doesn’t sound too hard and it doesn’t look like it merits two days work but it is rather hard having to tie each piece of cane to the support beam individually. Lots of fun I tell you……… I had a go at milking a goat today. Needless to say I was rather pathetic at it and I’ll probably be avoiding it for a while but an experience nonetheless. Different job tomorrow, helping to build a wall so that when it rains the water won’t wash away the land in front of one of the houses. Should be quite ... read more

The past several days have been unbelievable. The last time we blogged was I believe right before we were about to go shark diving, with great whites the following morning. So I can see how we left everyone reading in such suspense! We did survive (thanks Jess, for concern!) That is a whole adventure to the trip that I will do a separate blog- it will be very detailed, because Oh My God- we were close. Just a little detail for now, it was exciting, adrenaline pumping, and the first time on the water in Africa, to an area in Walker Bay, called ‘shark alley’. Need I say more? Right now we are at the airport in Johannesburg, to go on safari again! Forgot to mention that all those days we didn’t blog, they will ... read more

New word of the day: Eish! From what I understand it is a Zulu word that is simply an expression used to describe just about any emotion - frustration, surprise, sadness, happyness... it is also a substitution for most profanities... We spent the day today touring around Soweto - or 'south western township'. Just as a bit of background information, during the apartheid era, the non-white population was shipped out into these townships that were created in the outskirts of Johannesburg. Soweto is the largest and most famous of these (it is where both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu grew up). The area can be quite dangerous, so we went with a tour guide who picked us up at the house where we are staying. The tour was quite eye-opening as the poverty is astounding. ... read more

Refilwe has changed so much since last year, in fact everything everywhere appears to have changed. Jo’burg airport is different, lots of the shanty towns on the way to Refilwe have been replaced by what looks like cheap, affordable houses similar in size to the shacks they replace but built from proper materials. I guess the government have got to do something before 2010 although the few people I’ve spoken to here about the World Cup are doubtful the stadia will be ready for it but we can but hope. I’m hoping to get some photos of Refilwe up tomorrow so people can see how much it’s changed. Anyways, I’m just settling in today so not much to inform you of without photos…….... read more

As I write this I’m currently sitting in the emergency exit seat of a Virgin Atlantic A340-600, extra legroom and best placed to get off if we crash!!! It’s taken a hell of a lot of effort to get to this point starting off with a long, long wait in Manchester airport; a place I now despise with a passion. Checked in for bmi flight BD589 due to depart at 15.25, once I’ve said my goodbyes I trek to the gate I’ve been told to go to only to find no plane there at three. At about five past three I noticed a pall of fire engines heading towards the runway as if something bad was happening and low and behold, which plane was the plane landing? My bmi regional Embraer 135 jet-was followed to the ... read more
