Joburg and Soweto At the backpackers in the Drakensburg we met, Chi, Paul and Nirali. Chi very kindly offered to put us up at his flat for a couple of days so that we could see the real Jo'Burg. His flat turned out to be a very cool, very large, loft style apartment with a sauna and plunge pool! He had decked the whole place out from scratch and it was very stylish. He is also a great cook and cooked us a fantastic meal for our arrival. Went to the apartheid museum which is a really fasinating place. It charts South Africa's history for the gold rush to the present day and plays video clips for the time, lots of which are actually BBC broadcasts as the media was censored in South Africa. We ended ... read more

Dori and I are back in Johannesburg for the night. We fly out tomorrow for Victoria Falls and Matetsi. The Indian Ocean and beaches in Durban were beautiful. The secutity is very high and we were not allowed out after dark without security. Even the taxi driver had been hijacked 3 times. We drive back into the city a bit looking for a spice store and an art shop. The taxi driver took us to an emporium where we bought Zach his VooDoo item and a few other "goodies" to bring good luck and a long live to the receiver. In the evening we dined at a hotel just 2 doors down and had a South African favorite dish - bunny chow! It was a dish from the Apartheid times when blacks could not eat with ... read more

Wow, I don’t even know where to begin! Amazing! Amazing people, amazing animals, amazing cities, amazing history! Just amazing! Meet Ben… I met Ben on www.couchsurfing.com. A site where travelers host other travelers to help them in a new city. For Ben this is an understatement, he went way above and beyond! He gave me a very nice place to stay, made time for dinner on the night of my arrival, dropped me off and picked me up the next day at the Apartheid Museum, helped me shop for a camera then returned that camera for me, dropped me off at my next destination…and the list goes on. He made my stay fabulous! If you make it to JNB look Ben up, you won’t be disappointed. The Saturday of my arrival Ben threw a North Carolina ... read more

Wow, today's excursions were very eye-opening. First, we visited the Mdelwa-hlongwane school in Soweto where 100% of the students are black (even though integration is 'accepted' now) and these students are primarily Zulu. After lunch, we visited The Molento Project, in downtown Johannesburg, which is a literacy and language organization, and then we had a group dinner at an excellent South African restaurant. MDELWA-HLONGWANE SCHOOL As soon as we arrived at the school, we were greeted by the principle and she took us on a tour of the school. I cannot quite describe the hospitality and the welcoming atmosphere as we walked into the main administrative building. I have found that no matter where we have gone so far, everyone has been so generous and hospitable, this school was no exception. As we walked through the ... read more

04-18-2008: Sorry all, behind already on these entries - had a problem at the hotel in Johannesburg with the internet connection. In a very ritzy hotel in Cape Town now and with a strong internet connection... Will try to catch up tonight, if not - will catch up tomorrow! 04-16-2008: This program is great (People to People Citizens Ambassadors) - they do a great job of informing us about the history and culture of South Africa before they send us out to talk to government officials and school administrators. They are definitely making sure we are going into this experienced, informed, and prepared. People to People organizes professional delegations in many fields so that all professions can exchange views, ideas, and approaches. If you don't know what this program is, People to People is an organization ... read more

Hey All - I made it! It was a long plane ride, but luckily we stopped at Dakkar ,Senegal for a bit and had a chance to wander inside the plane and stretch. When we were about to take off again, the airline attendants sprayed the plane (while we were in it) to sanitize it for airborn illnesses. The claim that it was totally safe, that made us all real comfortable... As most of you know, I am terrified of flying, but thanks to xanax and ambienCR, I slept the whole way. Good thing is that I am not jet lagged (at least today); bad thing, I didn't do much on my dissertation! Not too much to finish, and since most of the people I am with have already complete their EdD's, so I have a ... read more

so it looks as if my time in SA has finally come to an end. it feels as if i just got here yesterday, and the day before i was lying in the tub dreaming about the day i would go back. i cant believe how fast the past 4 months have just flown by, strange almost. im going to miss it more than anything. all of it, every moment, is one i hope to never forget. the people place and things, all so special. cape town sunsets, the 20 or more of them, seals and dolphin spotting at the VA waterfront. wine tours, and their after partys on top of "table top" mountain. cheese and warm white wine picnics, ants included. wild horses in coffee bay, my little boy, the crayfish and mushrooms man outside ... read more

okay, so yesterday, so i thought, was the hardest day of this whole trip. i knew it was coming some how tho, and everytime i prolonged my departure date from durbs would have made it even worse, and although i was no where ready to leave, it was time i did, cause the longer i stayed that harder it would have been to leave. after the time ive had here, i cant imagine being any where else in the world, and after this morning, i have even more reason to believe i neec to do what i want, and be where i want, i cant base my decisions in life on what i think would work out best for other people and yourself, you must just do it for yourself. the hardest part now about being ... read more
