Using the internet cafe is quite slow and we are a bit late tonight. The school day is not late but the travelling back is slow in a minibus that takes all the volunteers who are at other schools and a commuity centre. We are the furthest out so the last drop off in the morning and the first pick up in the evening. We are not all staying in the same place and tonight we were last to be dropped off. WE did manage to get over on the beach as the weather improved midweek and it is warm and sunny and the sea is 22 degrees. It is a big stretch of sandy beach and the best body surfing I have had for years. I think I am considered a bit mad but I ... read more

Life is full of new experiences. I managed to meet my colleague at the airport - we arrived at the same time and having expchanged photos got through the check in quickly once we had convinced them we really were allowed 40 kilos. I did think we might have to unpack again. Johannesburg airport was a bit daunting and we only just caught the onward flight but everything went smoothly afterwards and we only had a ten minute drive from the airport to our base in Port Elizabeth. We connected with other volunteers unpacked and walked on the beach over the road. It was a bit dull and not very warm so I kept out of the sea except for a quick paddle. I got hot later when I sat in the front row on my ... read more

I thought I had better get some blogging practice in before I leave. February 16th suddenly seems very close and I keep looking at the things I want to take, the size of my case and the weight allowance and expecting a miracle. I am hoping to travel with one fellow volunteer from the airport. I already feel I am starting to make connections with some of the new people I am going to meet. I have lots of pieces of information about the area, the school where I will be a volunteer and the context but it is a patchwork which doesn’t yet fit together. My biggest anxiety is about being useful when I arrive. I have been collecting teaching resources which might be useful. Thanks for the contributions from friends. I also seem to ... read more

I've been here for a week now, exploring the city, and getting settled and ready to start classes on the 11th. Today I was supposed to register, but found out that the few classes I had preselected back home are not being offered this year. I'm now waiting to hear back from someone in the sociology department whether there will be any similar classes offered. Yesterday a group of international students took a hike on campus. NMMU is located on a 280 acre nature reserve where all sorts of wildlife live including zebras, monkeys, and a few kinds poisonous snakes. Unfortunately we didn't see any zebras or snakes, but we did see a young tortes and some springbok. Apparently most of the monkeys hang out on campus where they can find plenty food and they're seen ... read more

Next on the itinerary was Port Elizabeth but mainly to meet up with camping friends who we hadn't seen for 7 years. It was lovely to catch up on all the news for the past few years and find out what children and grandchildren were up to. They made us incredibly welcome and a braai fire was lit and the meat got out as we regaled each other with travel tales, although I must admit theirs in African territory were a lot more exciting than ours on more civilised continents had been. We left them with instructions to let us know when they are next off on a trip and we may well join them.... read more

Port Elizabeth is described by Lonely Planet as a charmless sort of place with not much in the way of things to do, despite its self-promotion as "the friendly city". It seemed pretty friendly to us on the whole, but it was perhaps short on spectacles. "Don't walk in the centre at night", our cabbie advised us unnecessarily, as we drove through it and deftly activated the central locking as we stopped at the lights. "It's nice during the day but at night they turn into monsters". We'd worked that out a couple of days earlier during an exploratory walk in, and quick cab ride back. We were there, of course, for the second one-dayer. My suggestion of going to the SA Airforce Museum was swiftly vetoed as a group activity, which left eating and drinking, ... read more

... to being a New Zealander said Mike C. "In fact I can't think of any... but this is one." We are in Port Elizabeth, preparing to watch the NZers play SA in the fifth game of the tour. NZ have lost all 4 previous games, the last two by tiny margins and the first two by country miles. Our preparation involves large steaks and relaxing by the pool. And waiting for happy hour (free drinks from 5-7). We flew yesterday in from Joberg which is distinctly unlovely, as is very well known. We hopped on the plane at Joberg, and an obviously kiwi guy sat down beside us in the back row. "Planes aren't getting any bigger", he said. "Here for the cricket?," I asked. "Yep, I'm commentating". It was DK Morrison, former fast ... read more

I decided to go back home and visit all the family, it had been about 3 years since I was last there and felt like I needed to go back home before I head off on my next adventure (Canada). Always feeling a bit unsure about how it will be like going back to SA, and not too keen to leave Benoit for 3 weeks, I was a bit uneasy about traveling alone again. The flight to SA was long and painful, on a very old Lufthansa aircraft , with hardly no inflight entertainment, and very uncomfortable seats. I realized then I had had enough of traveling and am actually sick of flying! Arriving in PE, driving from the airport is always strange, seeing all the familiar places and street names. I didn’t have any major ... read more
